How Screenwriters View Firearms

G.M. 19, is that a script that has already been bought by a studio or independent producer?? Or did the writer write it "on spec?"

If so, who is the writer?

Sorry I can not disclose.

GLOCKMAN 19 - "Sorry I can not disclose."

No problem. I was just wondering if he/she is a professional screenwriter, I might know him/her.

Most writers in Hollywood don't know any more about firearms (other than they hate them and want Big Brother to confiscate them) than I know about being an astronaut.

There has been a good, if minor, portrayal of guns so far in the new series "Life is Wild". The grandfather has been frequently seen toting about his hunting rifle for protection from dangerous African game. No one seems to think anything odd about this.

There have been some movies and shows that have not taken an anti-gun stance, they're just the exception -- by far.

The new TV series "Cane" has shown Jimmy Smits' character possessing a handgun for personal protection (I think it's a Sig 9mm), and practicing with it at a range -- without making an anti-gun statement. Who knows whether it will last or not.

YES Professional. If you know the business has been paid to write many movies but has only had 6 made.

I like Planet Terror (1st half of Grind House). The good guy kept two AR-15s (and assorted other weapons) in his truck.

But I think I may be the only person who say that movie.

" I never miss."

"Give him the gun. Give him all the guns."

"Hit the wipers please."

I enjoyed it.

There are some bright spots to be sure. The great Milius is one of course (hallowed be His Name). And this youngster James Gunn has turned out a few scripts (Dawn of the Dead, Slither) that seem to be pretty arms-friendly. But it's never been hard to count them on one or two hands.

Here's more..............

Recently a movie came out about some "gun nut" in New Zealand who goes on a 24 hour rampage and kills 13 people........In NYC, a certain TV show called "Women's Murder Club" shows female homicide investigators talking about relationships, bikini waxes, and facial treatments while conducting autopsies on murder victims.

There we go. Not to mention "300", a completely racist and psychotic movie filled with hero motif and testosterone. Oh, I like the way they portrayed the Persians as vampires and zombies..........Backstabbing Hollywood screenwriters really have to resort to such imbecile behavior to attack enemies??? In Chinese we call these backstabbers "Xiao Ren", or "small hearted people", people with hearts so small that they have to rely on cowardly tactics.

Six produced? Yep, that's professional enough. Many, many scripts are bought in Hollywood, or are commissioned by a studio or independent producer. Very few are actually "greenlighted."

The writer whose script you read, very well might be on strike very soon. So will I. Fortunately, now living in Idaho, I'll not be walking picket: he will ... if he's living in L.A. (I put my "picket time" in during the 1973, 1981, 1985, and 1988 WGA strikes. Glad I'm not living there... for more reasons than one. ;))

Your wife must be in "the Business." So was mine.

Good luck.

A good writer/producer

In my spare time, yeah right, I am a weapon handler for movies. I occasionally find my way on screen, (Independence Day and Con Air are a couple) ,
I have been working of late with a British writer/ producer, Nyk Fry.

He hired me for his last film , (Reflections in the Mud) see imbd.com for more info. He wanted realism, NOT Hollywood weapon handling. To the extent when the script calls for FA M16 fire or something else we went to the range and recorded audio of that actual weapon firing.
Grip, stance, barricade shooting etc... were also done correctly in the films.

For those of you that have seen the Gun Store video
Do a google video search for (gun store video horror) http://http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=8751171101401852956&q=gun+store+video+horror&total=14&start=0&num=20&so=0&type=search&plindex=0
he is the director of that video.

Plus he’s got a realistic attitude when it comes to guns.

As someone who spent 10 years in the Hollywood machine I can tell you there is a huge double standard. Most writers, celebrities, studio heads all have firearms in their houes, most of the illegal.

It's often the studio attorneys who sign off on every script and change the direction of firearm laws. If you spend anytime with a hollywood writer it will come out that they are pro-gun. Many of them on the outside believe in better gun laws but even if guns would illegal they would have them, because they feel they need protection from crazy fans.

INKHEAD - "If you spend anytime with a hollywood writer it will come out that they are pro-gun."

Inkhead, I disagree with you on that one. And as far as "spending time with a Hollywood writer," I have been -- and still am -- a member of the Writers Guild of America, west, since pre-WGA strike in 1973.

I've written many network primetime dramatic one hour shows, have had one of my feature scripts made into a movie, plus have been story editor on two shows, one being a primetime network one hour dramatic show and the other a very popular 30 minute syndicated show. I've also served on two committees at the Writers Guild of America. So I think I qualify as one who knows quite a few writers.

I haven't the faintest idea how many writers I know and have known over these many years of being very active in "the Business."

I have had many, many discussions, arguments, etc., about the firearms issue over the years, with myriad writers. I believe strongly that at least 90% of those with whom I've spoken, or know their direct opinions, are anti-guns owned by American citizens.

Yes, many of them are hypocrites and secretly own a gun or two for their own protection, but that doesn't mean they don't think that your, my, and everyone else's guns shouldn't be confiscated.

I assure you that if an exec producer wanted something in a script to be "fair" about firearms and citizens, it would be in the show or movie. A lawyer wouldn't have anything to do with it, at least, in my experience.

Yes, there are a few writers who are pro-2nd Amendment, but they are few and far between.

That's the way it is in Hollywood.

BTW, were you above the line or below??

YES, She has produced Eight since the mid 1990's and has been in meetings every day this week hoping to get the green light on a couple before any strike. "It's nail biting time". We should know by next week.

I am a semi-retired Financial/Estate Planner and help in the financing end. Deficit Financing, Tax Credits and the like. I've created a couple of shows myself in the past and Executive Produced some that never made it past pilot. Also produced a couple of video games.

My Celebrity clients help keep the bills paid and allow for the creative exploration. Needless to say I have plenty of play time.

Idaho, a beautiful place. Bogus Basin, great skiing. We're debating on a ski condo in Mammoth, Tahoe, Whistler, Utah or Wyoming. Each has it's benefits. Mammoth, Tahoe, distance from home; Whistler IMHO some of the best skiing in the world; Utah, the sheer volume of different places to choose & my CCW; Wyoming, one of my best friends owns and operates a couple of restrauants there, Jackson Hole & CCW permit.

I assure you that if an exec producer wanted something in a script to be "fair" about firearms and citizens, it would be in the show or movie. A lawyer wouldn't have anything to do with it, at least, in my experience.
I agree.

Someone finally said it.

Are you saying most of them own firearms “illegally”? I’ve certainly noticed that when a character acquires a firearm in a movie or TV show, it is most often by illegal means, even when said character wouldn’t appear to be a prohibited person.

Best of luck to your wife on getting a go ahead on one or both of her projects. I know exactly what that "nail biting" thing is! Been there & done that a few times! ;)

Lots of good places to have a vacation home in the west. If I weren't in Idaho, Jackson, Wyom., would be my "almost" favorite place. I actually like the area over around DuBois, better.

After 35 years in Los Angeles, I and my wife, escaped!

Couldn't be happier!

Hope all goes well for you and your wife.
