rivet a leather scabard to the seat bottom. make a scabard with a top flap so you can add a lock to it, and store it with a dessicant and make sure its oiled well.

are you trying to hide it or just keep it out of the way untill its needed?

Make sure you have/make a pouch or something to store ammunition on stripper clips, too (I assume your SKS uses a stock magazine). An SKS isn't much good without ammo!

Bear in mind that you may have serious legal problems if you carry a loaded weapon in your car without a permit - depends on your State of residence. TX certainly frowns on it unless you have a CCW permit.

That said, a rifle under the seat is a really, REALLY bad idea if you might need to access it in a hurry. It will certainly stretch the width of the vehicle, so that if people are sitting in that seat, their legs will prevent easy access from the front. If you need to access it from the back, people sitting in the next row of seats will have to get their legs out of the way. If there are bags or other things on the floor in front of or behind the seat (often the case in my car! :D ) then access will be further obstructed.

IMHO, you'd be better off securing it to the roof of your vehicle, over your head, or laying it on the floor or the seat behind you. To put it in the most-difficult-to-access place in your vehicle doesn't make sense.

Actually as far as I'm aware there are no restrictions on having a long gun in
your vehicle here. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Before I had my CHL I was in an auto accident that disabled my old truck
and had to get a ride home from the responding officer. I told him I would not
leave my Winchester Defender in the truck unattended. He asked if it was
loaded to which I responded, "it's no good if it isn't". He gave me a funny look
and told me to get it and put it in his trunk.

I dunno if that would be physically possible with some cars. Maybe if you put a folding stock on it.

preacherman,

i was picturing semi long term storage in a out of sight place. somthing that you can stow away and forget about untill you want to get it out. for immediate use then i agree a roof rack would be fastest to get to. but it would be visible to anyone and you wouldnt be able to park anywhere and leave the car or truck without the fear of a break in.

There are no restrictions....

for carrying a loaded, uncased, long gun in Texas. The only reason you don't see them in the back window rack of a pickup, is they invite theft....An SKS would not fit under the seats of my trucks, bucket seats. I just put it behind the seat......My wife's truck has a bench seat but there is not enough room for a rifle......chris3

And Texas recently improved the definition of "traveling" (or was that only for handguns?)

I know this is specific to the SKS, but "more punch waiting in the trunk" is why I built a 10in barreled AK (not a chopped rifle, but on a papered, legal "pistol receiver".)

Seat Covers

I once had an after-market seat cover (on an '82 Chevy PU with a bench seat) which had a "built-in" long gun scabbard along the front of the seat. I carried an old single shot shotgun in it for years and it never got in the way and was always handy. They still sell those seat covers at J. C. Whitney - they were a "saddle blanket" pattern. But I don't know if they still have that built in scabbard.

The car gun, why?

I'll be honest, I just never really got the idea of the "car gun" or the "car rifle", for "most people". ("Most people" being urban/suburban dwellers, which statistically speaking, is "most people".)

Now if I lived in a rural area, where police response is measured anywhere from 15 minutes, to hours, and/or no one else is around to even call, I had the potential for opportunistic shots on varmints/predators, a sudden hunting/plinking opportunity, or to put down injured animals etc. it makes great sense.

However, I just don't see it making sense in an urban/suburban scenario, if I've got a CCW on my person, and I have the opportunity to run to my car for a rifle, I've got the opportunity to get the hell out of there too.

Don't get me wrong, if you can do it legally in your state, more power to you, if you're a gun owner at home, or on your hip, I see no problem with one in your car too. I want to like the idea of the "car gun" very badly, I just don't know if it makes any sense for most people from a purely pragmatic situational standpoint.

Except for rural dwellers, (which perhaps, you all are) I just can't fathom a scenario where I'd be able to bring a rifle into play, where I couldn't just use the time escaping.

I drive a vintage Ford pick up. The seat cover has a pocket in the front, down by the floorboards, running the width of the truck seat. . My SKS fits inside that long pocket just fine.

AJ, no one said you had to have a car gun. Why are you questioning those that like the idea? We certainly are not all the same here, thats for sure. :D

PA

In PA its easy to get a carry permit and keep a loaded handgun in the car but its illegal to keep a loaded long gun in the car. Its a big hunting state so I think it has something to do with preventing poaching.

I really don't find long guns of much use for defense in a car or a truck because if I get out of the car in a residential area I really can't take it with me. Nor can I get to it without stopping and opening the door. They're just too clumsy. They might be ok as a second weapon, but the whole time you are trying to get at it you're a perfect target sitting in a vehicle. A good hand gun that you can shoot real well would likely be a lot more useful.
Now, if you want it to shoot some coyote or whatever, then you don't need to have it loaded anyway. It doesn't take all that long to slip in a round, which is all you will need for one coyote.

couple of good quality decent sized velcro patches ought to do the trick

Re: Preacherman "...frowned upon here in Texas..."

You are wrong, Sir.

Nothing in Texas law forbids you from carrying a long gun, openly, concealed or otherwise. You may legally walk right up Congress Avenue with your LOADED M1A or your 870 and you have borken no law.

Now, Johnny Law may roll up and give you a hard time, but he has no legal basis for doing so.

One more thing. If you are "traveling" through or within Texas, the law says you can carry a handgun "...opnely or in any manner."

This whole registration idea comes from HollyWeed.

North Carolina

BTW, in North Carolina open carry is prefectly legal, either walking down the road or in your vehicle. As long as the weapon is not concealed, you are good to go. There is not gun registration in NC either.

trunk-carry gun thoughts

I keep a Kel-Tec Sub2k folder carbine in a cordura sack in my Honda CR-V.

It fits great in the empty spare wheel "tub" in the back.
