OK, dumb question, but I have a problem with very fine powders when pouring from an 8lb jug. Seems like no matter what funnel I use there is always some powder that gets everywhere.

So, who has a great solution - please don't say use smaller jugs - for transferring powder from an 8lb jug to either the powder measure or a smaller jug.

I just use a wide mouth funnel. When the powder in the hopper reaches the bottom of the funnel, that means stop pouring. You can then put a little more into the funnel, raise it, and let the powder flow into the hopper. Just pay attention to what your doing.

Transfer to old 1 lb container of the same powder
Transfer to smaller plastic container that is easier to pour from
Use a large funnel on the powder hopper
Pour powder into bucket and scoop powder into measure and then use a funnel to pour from bucket to original container
Call a neighbor in to help

I just cup my hand over the jug mouth and hopper mouth. Haven't had a problem with it. The finest powder I use from an 8 lb jug is Winchester WSF.

Try pouring some into a zip loc bag and then turn the bag sideways so you get a narrow pour from the bag.

Don't use a regular funnel, get one with sides that come up an inch or two. The one I use is from auto parts store and is rectangular, not round with high sides. Also, aluminum funnels work better than plastic for some reason. The powder flows right through them and no static cling.
You just haven't found the right funnel yet, keep looking.

Plastic funnels love to grab that stuff due to static. Either use the soap trick, which leaves the surface a touch sticky, or rub the funnel inside and out with an anti static dryer sheet. Repeat as needed or keep a couple of the sheets around for wiping them down after each use.

I have been using the funnel method for years. To avoid static problems get an aluminum funnel. Works great. The only time I have powder spills is when my clumsy side gets involved, which is to frequent anymore as I get older. As long as I take my time it all goes where I want it.

This is an important issue as powder needs to be transferred from place to place when reloading. In order to conserve an expensive and short supplied commodity proper handling needs to be learned and practiced.

I too just cup my hand around the measure and the jug mouth. I shake it as I slowly tip it up to pour, avoiding an "avalanche" inside the jug. Kinda like drinking from the bottom of a glass full of ice. It is most likely to want to spill with HP-38 than it is with the extruded powders I typically load with for rifle.

Go old school an fold a piece of heavy paper in half length wise. Use it as a shoot:D

Do you think this would work?

You could try getting an extra screw-on cap for your 8-lb jug and drilling a 1/2" hole in it. Use that cap for pouring into a funnel atop the receiving vessel and replace the unaltered cap when done.

I use the paper funnels from my local convenience store. Believe they have them to assist the customers when needing to add oil or windshield washer fluid.

I grab ten or so at a time, but they seem to last for ever and you do not have to worry about static.

I use a really big rectangular funnel I think I bought long ago for oil changes but had never used for that purpose. Can't remember where I got it...but this appears to be it:

I use the funnel both for filling the powder hopper and for returning powder to the jugs...whether its 1lb, 4lb, or 8lb. For the smaller bottles, you have to be careful not to let them tip over.

I have always used a "dry funnel" thing I made for handling small parts, because it's always handy and I always know where it is.

It's more scoop than funnel. Kinda like a slightly curled up piece of paper with a tapered end, except it's made from a durable laminate. I hold the scoop in the mouth of the 1 lb can at about a 45ish degree angle and pour the 8 lb can onto the scoop.

I have always poured directly from the 1 lb can to hopper and back. Never had an issue.

This has to be one of the strangest questions ever ask on THR!!

1. Funnel too small?
Get a bigger funnel.

2. Static blowing grains out?
Use a dryer sheet or Static Guard spray.

3. Can't lift an 8 pound jug?
Get help.

Can't help with blueprints for a paper funnel
I could swear I had them when I was 4 or 5 in 1950.

But I can't find them now.
