So I got this Norinco AK and it has the M4 style stock on it. Not bad, but if i had a choice I would pick something else.
I'm usually good with mechanical processes and figuring them out. What I really want to know is if I bought a replacement stock of my choice, what other screws/adapters am I gonna need to attach the new stock on the AK? Assuming the stock can even be changed

Do you have a good set of wood files? :)

Seriously, though, every time Ive changed furniture on an AK, it has involved a good bit of fitting. There are so many dimensional differences between manufacturers that the stock makers intentionally make the stocks a little on the fat side, then expect you to whittle them down until it fits snug. Also, dont expect the holes to line up perfectly- the best stocks let you drill your own holes after the fitting is done. Worst case, Ive had to fill them in with wood putty, then redrill.

So, my advice- bring files, rasps, painters tape, a Dremel with woodworking bits, electric drill, marking compound (or crayons), a decent selection of different length screws/bolts, washers, wood shims, and a lot of patience.

Well the stock i'm thinking of is this one:

Not sure what size receiver stamping these were made for. The Norincos use 1.5mm, so if the E.German was a 1mm it will likely be loose. Doesnt mean it cant be done, but youll probably have to build it up in spots with epoxy or shims. The tang will likely be a different shape/ length too. Also, the grip bolts and/or wedge nut may not be compatible- youll just have to try it and see.

Of course, all this assumes you dont have a slant-cut receiver. Slant-cut Norincos require special stocks that only fit them.

My biggest concern would be how brittle/unforgiving that 40-year old plastic is when trying to fit it. If the shoulder stock isnt fitted correctly, shock over time will induce cracking.

Also note that the Norinco lower front handguards had a metal spacer between the wood and the receiver which most other manufacturers dont use- this makes adapting all-wood or plastic lowers a pain.

Timbersmith makes excellent AK stocks and they sell kits specifically for Norincos. They aint cheap, but it may save you alot of time and effort since they will fit better and require less tinkering to get there. EDIT: Hmmmm, I dont see them listed on their website anymore, ugh. I would probably still give them a call and see what they say.

Look into the Magpul Zhukov line of stocks too. Magpul makes top-quality products and their Customer Service is great. Call them too and see if they recommend a specific stock and/or hardware kit.

Bottom line- dont expect ANY stock to fit without some fitting. They just dont.

Typically, all the same screws and fasteners attach any stock used. There are only a limited number of places that are threaded for the furniture.

The pistol grip will likely not be an issue, it will use the long screw up through the bottom. The fore end is generally a pinch fit, leaving you only the excitement of the actual buttstock. And the 1.5mm versus 1mm issue will rear its head (Chinese AK variants were reverse-engineered from Soviet RPD which use 1.5mm stampings, and not the 1mm used by Soviet AKM.)

The only remotely similar subject I found on Youtube is "How to remove an AK Side-Folding...". Every video's purpose was about Adding the M4, or removing the classic AKM wooden buttstock.

Apparently you did quite a search (and on Google).
It seems strange that nobody else seemed to want to publicize what you are doing.

There's no doubt that you will succeed and many of us would do the same process.

Personally, I prefer com bloc laminated wood fore and aft. See them for sale often, in the marketplace at AKFiles forum.
I used the US made Warsaw Pact length plastic stock from Kvar for my Saiga, and it worked great.
You can probably sell your M4 adaptor and stock.

I've made the mistake of turning to the mallet in times of frustration. This is good advice, follow it OP.

Luckily the ATF has never indicted any private owner....only... for an > importer/builder < compliance "issue". The regs are too vague, and -- no 'required' parts -- are required to state "US-made". Forensic analysis isn't worth the trouble (to them).
They must first have a confirmed, actual felony charge such as drug distribution, bank robbery, trafficking etc.
