Hundreds sue Illinois over denied CCL permits

"May issue" CCW law is hardly narrowly tailored nor the least obtrusive method for permitting. Consequently, Illinois law will most likely fail a constitutional strict scrutiny test in court.

Interesting to note the serviceman who shot down the shooter firing into a crowd last week in Chicago could not have gotten a CCW permit a little over a year ago before Illinois became the last state in the nation to adopt a permitting procedure, flawed as it may be by "may issue".

Il is not "May issue". People will exaggerate their complaints but it is most definitely shall issue.

When you can be denied for no reason with no recourse you are back to may issue. You do not know if your clean criminal record is going to be enough.

Unless may/shall is defined by having to show cause to get the permit and not whether the permit is issued. If simply not having to show cause makes shall issue then they are.

Actually they are.It is claimed that IL is a Shall issue system but in reality it is not. Local PDs and "others" can use their political clout to block you.The CCW Board is made up of "Machine" lackeys and vote with brown envelopes.

Can we compromise and call it a "Maybe Issue" ? :D Sheesh, talk about distinctions without differences...

I applied and got my Illinois permit, 58 days, faster then it took my Florida permit To arrive. For me and other friends who have their cards now it was rather anticlimactic. I can carry 99 % of the time as I move through my day. That some are having problems is not unexpected, especially in Illinois. We must
Never let up in the battle to sustain and expand gun rights but to moan that we have a miserable may issue system is not supported by the facts. I've had a FOID for 42 years and now I can legally carry a gun in any state I may visit, This is something I never thought I would see in my lifetime.

It's not a may issue system. It's a "sort of shall issue" system.

Would be a fairly good system if it wasn't for that awful review board process, training were lowered to 8 hours, license fees cut in 1/3 (or less), non-residents could get approval if they took an IL training course, and the list of prohibited places wasn't so frustratingly long or all encompassing.
