How about the Luftwaffe Survival Drilling?
From J.P. Sauer, a drilling in 12-12-9.3x74R. Apparently they started out thinking about being forced down in wilderness, not an occupied country full of le Resistance with STENs.
You could add an insert barrel in .22 LR, .22 WMR, or .22 Vierling (.22 WCF).

I think alot of us are forgetting numerous countries don't allow rifles in current or past military chamberings, which would nix 223, 308 and 30-06 (among some other great cartridges)

My Tikka in 25-06 would handle varmints and deer size game at longer ranges. My tikka in 375 ruger would handle larger game. My 444 marlin handi rifle would also have to go along simply because its my favorite hunting rifle.

Why? A lot of buffalo were dropped with 45-70 blackpowder loads during the frontier days. And 30-06 delivers more ME than 45-70 blackpowder does.

Why? A lot of buffalo were dropped with 45-70 blackpowder loads during the frontier days. And 30-06 delivers more ME than 45-70 blackpowder does.

I'm not talking about American Bison, I'm talking about African Buffalo. Also, a 45-70 can put a 500 gr. bullet, propelled by black powder, entirely through a Bison, if no large bones are hit. Just ask Mike Venturino or Clint Smith. They have done it.

Can a 30-06 do that? Possibly, with a heavy, round nose FMJ bullet, but I doubt it would result in a quick kill. I don't think a 30-06 would be anyone's first choice to stop a charging African buffalo.

And 30-06 delivers more ME than 45-70 blackpowder does.

Uhhh... no, it doesn't. Not if we are talking handloads, anyway. A stiff 45-70 load can approach 4,000 Ft. Lbs. of energy. The 06 can't match that, with any load.

I think 8 hits from a Garand would do in an African Buffalo as well as 1-2 from a Rigby.....but hope I never have to find out!

Depends on whether you are talking about American bison or Cape buffalo.
A commercial bison hunt amounted to hunting down a herd and sniping them from a comfortable distance.
I don't think the old Sahibs did much buffalo hunting with .45 BPE unless they were trying to scrape by with a Martini. Greener recommended an 8 bore.

He did say blackpowder, but still, a 220 grain .308 bullet is no equal to a 500 grain hard cast.

The late, great Roy Weatherby took a Cape buffalo with his 257 Weatherby Magnum. No wonder it was his favorite cartridge. I read about this in his book but don't remember the distance or the load. My educated guess is a 120 grain bullet was involved.
I think every North American hunter has 22 Long and the 12-16-20 gauge shotguns on their list as Needed Equipment.
