Hunting the world with three cartridges-----what will you pick?

Honestly the only country I’ve been to where people didn’t like Americans was France, and that was limited to just being a little rude. You would be surprised how many people worldwide speak at least some English. Language really isn’t much of a problem. Iceland is a gorgeous country and very easy to travel in. I highly recommend it.

I feel we’ve strayed a bit off subject, and I thank the THR staff for their indulgence.
Having never been outside of the U.S. except for brief forays into Canada and Mexico, all I have to go on is the opinions of others (mostly military, God bless them for their service !) and their experiences range from wonderful to horrible.
Back on point; .22 l.r. is useful in many different ways, and is commonly available.
30-06 is also very common, and if handloaded can cover a very wide spectrum of applications.
12 ga. covers everything else and fills in all the gaps…in fact, if I was limited to only one, this would be it.

New day New choices.
400 Legend woods gun
6.5 creedmoor walkabout (I know that it has been around for awhile, but I haven't had one yet)
7mm PRC all around rifle

There are too many good choices :D

The topic is hunting the world with only three cartridges. So, initially one might think .30-06 Springfield and what other two? Simply because .30-06 is so versatile. But, realistically, although superior to the .270, by how much? But I digress.

But, once you break this down to only THREE rounds and wish to cover the WORLD with the most versatility, one HAS to be 12 gauge. For fowl and for small game like squirrel. Then you need to have adequate stopping power for dangerous African game. Probably even .416 Rigby isn’t adequate, perhaps .577 Nitro. And then, in the middle can be .30-06 Springfield.

If one wants to include .22LR then the .30-06, seemingly the obvious first choice, would have to be eliminated. As it’s all about projectile placement, carefully place your .577 Nitro round when hunting whitetail deer so your game isn’t pulverized.

With regards to projectile placement, wasn’t the Boone & Crockett record deer taken with a .25-20? And I’m sure somewhere a bull elephant has been taken with a properly placed .22LR round.

As for myself, I’ve never hunted outside of the States and have taken more deer with a Winchester 1886 rifle in .33 WCF than any other round.

If this question was limited to only THREE rounds for taking North American game, inevitably .30-06 Springfield would make the list of about 90% of those questioned, but if the .33 WCF was regularly chambered in modern scoped rifles, maybe it would be a good all around choice. If not eclipsed by its big brother, .45-70 Government.

I agree that a 12 gauge pump is about the most versatile long gun available, possibly the best in terms of variety of game that can be taken. I assumed the OP meant rifle cartridges, hence my first offering of .22LR, 7mm-08, and .375 Ruger. If we're talking centerfires only, 6 Creed, 7 PRC, and .375 Ruger.

If we're changing the game to three single-cartridge long guns, that's a tougher decision. I'd probably have to include a 12 gauge pump because of its versatility. I'd still want the .375 Ruger to anchor the top end. Hard to imagine not having at least one rimfire, but I'd probably have to go with the 6 Creed and load the .375 down to cover the mid range.

It's deadly on eyebrows to lol, I think most that haven't shot game with one believe it is hard on meat.
Probably, my inlaws were making fun of mine when i had it on molokai.....didnt help that it actualy WAS hard on meat the way I was loading it at the time. Course not shooting things end to end probably would have helped.

For my runners up cartridges, I’ll go with:
22-250 Remington and 222 Remington
280 Remington and 7mm Weatherby Magnum
9.3x62mm Mauser and 416 Remington Magnum

Ammo and access to the animals you want to hunt are not an issue for this 3-rifle battery to hunt anything on land. My choices are:
375 H&H
300 Weatherby
6.5 Creedmoor

I have asked this question over the years. Now and then the hot, new cartridge getting lots of "flash-in-the-pan" attention gets on the list. I'm not asking for defense of the choices, just your picks. Go!
.22 LR
.30-06
.375 H&H
