Picked up my new 1911 yesterday and took it to the range. It's a Springfield Armory Loaded MC Operator model.

Put 150rds of Blazer Brass through it. I must say, I now understand the what all the 1911 guys have been saying all along. The trigger on this thing is like butter. The gun points perfectly and is literally 10 times more accurate than I am. It's SOOOO easy to shoot also.. I though my P220R was a laser, but this thing is like "HOLY CRAP" accurate. Totally pleased with my purchased. The gun shop convinced to get a little light for it, so I got that too. :)

The only issue I had was the gun jammed twice when trying to chamber a round by disengaging the slide stop. Dont know if this is an issue or not.. Im trying to get away from using the slide stop anyway. My buddy is a San Diego Sherrif Deputy and he always yells at me and says I should be working the slide when reloading. I guess they train them to rack the slide when loading, reloading, clearing, etc.

EDIT: This might sound corny, but can anyone give any advice on "double taps" or whatever. I watch this video here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wbg2s2bfjhw and I cannot get two shots on target that fast. Cant do it with the 1911 or P220.. it's like the recoil is too great and it takes me a .5 a second to get back on target. I can kinda do it with my XD-9, but not the .45s. Maybe I just need more practice..

Anyway, obligatory pics :) .. Gun is a little dirty because I took pictures after the range.

you got it right. its a slide STOP not a lide release. the 1911 purist will say you should work the slide. personaly i didnt used to agree, but after getting a 1911 and shooting it, i do. i seem to get more Malfs witht he slide stop being used as a slide release

welcome to the JMB world! just wait, soon you will be searching for a High Power and a 1903 pocket pistol

Congrats on the Springfield! That looks great.

Regarding the jam, it shouldn't be hanging up on chambering the round with the slidestop. I slingshot also, but the gun should work either way. What weight recoil spring is standard on your Operator?

I'd say wait til' you've fired 500 rds. Document how many failures total you've had and at what round count. A heavier recoil spring (18 lbs) might cure the problem.

Dont know the weight on the spring.. it's got a standard gi guide rod though, so I guess maybe the spring is just the standard weight too.. Think I will get some new mags too.. It comes with two mags and they seem pretty basic.

standard factory weight springs are normaly 16lbs.if you experience problems, try an 18 lber, if your gunna shoot hot loads you should move up to 18 or 20lb

So it begins, 1911's are alot like Lay's potato chips. Enjoy many rounds down range..........USMC 84-88

Nice looking pistol!!!
Congrats.

As far as double tapping goes, why bother? It's a .45ACP, right?

Double-tapping was brought into training when the 9mm became more popular.
The 9mm is easier to get a 2d shot off with, and you may actually need it.

Double-tapping is learnable with the .45, but it takes awhile.

Have a good time with your new Springer, mine will be here soon......

Sweet gun. I just wish SA would have checked the front strap instead of using the Pachmayr grips.

When I am ready to add a permanent 1911 to the collection the MC Operator is high on my list.

Welcome to 1911's! It won't be your last!

Even though the P220 is an awesome pistol, the trigger system doesn't come close to any halfway decent M1911.

Nice choice, double taps are two quck shots, with the second round squeezed off right after the first. There is no aiming on the second shot. The first shot is aimed at center mass. It will take practice and your shots will end up 3" or under between them. Enjoy

Like you I used to wonder what all the hubbub was with 1911's.

Stot my first Kimber 1911 about 4 weeks ago, the tightest group I ever shot at 25 yds., ever! I love that feeling of finding something I just gotta have.

Congrats, that Springfield is sweet..

I just bought a Springfield loaded hi-cap 1911 (PX9707L) It's a non current model, but is very similar to yours. My first 1911 is a bare bones Rock Island Armory 1911A1 that I added Crimson Trace grips and a beavertail safety. I'm hooked!!!

Wraparound rubber grips?!

What the...? Suggesting a guy slap rubber all over a fine habdgun like that is like suggesting he throw paint all over the Mona Lisa.

Now, about your new 1911. Springfields sometimes come with rather erratic springs. Replace the recoil spring with a Wolff spring, it'll cost about eight bucks. I run 18.5# variables in my guns, but don;t monkey with that until you determine you need it. Start off with a stock weight, 16#.

Now, slide stop or slide release. Both. The reason your deputy friend showed you to "slingshot" is because of the sidearms they carry. Plastic with no useable external controls. You've got no choice but to slingshot the Buck Rogers' Special. For an experienced hand with a 1911, using the slide stop/release is faster than slingshotting the slide.

Double taps. Not yet. Work on proper grip first. Right thumb rides on top of the safety, this puts the pistol lower in your hand and the beavertail keeps you from getting hammer bite. Also prevents you from bumping the safety up during recoil, locking up your pistol temporarily. Worry about accurate, fast will come quickly if the 1911 fits you well.

Congrats. Glad you are happy with it. 1911's are great guns. I am like a couple of others though. Those rubber grips would have to go. :)

ISMI Springs if you ever need springs. I think they are the best, although you can't go wrong with Wolff springs as suggested earlier.

Cool thanks for the tip on the grip.. Ill check out the springs too.
Man, I'm so stoked about finally getting one of these. I feels like going to the range again today :) .. Last time I was this happy was when I got my M1A. SA Inc. sure has got some money out of me.. I've be thouroughly satisfied with all their products though. No compaints :)

The blotch is already on the masterpiece, the light rail. :D Though it could very well come in handy, I just wish there was a different way to put a light on.
As for the rubber wraparounds, I think they'd look great, especially with the OD green frame, and they make the gun feel even better than it already does. I have them on all my 1911s. Call me a philistine. :D :D

As others have said, slide STOP not slide release.

If right handed, with pistol in right hand with trigger finger straight, place left/support hand flat against slide of pistol. Wrap left hand around slide, pull slide back with left hand and push slightly with right hand using waist (hands, body, mind) to drive pistol forward (like a washing machine agitator). Left hand should follow through to hit right shoulder. Keep finger straight and off trigger. Reform shooting grip.
