I know a guy that most of his rifles are World War Two bolt actions. I believe he has at least one of every model made. He does have a few guns that don't fit this category, but not many. I good friend of mine is a shotgun nut. Most of his guns are fancy over and unders. He has one handgun and one rimfire rifle. I know there are others that collect Smiths or Colts or whatever.

Then there is me. My collection of guns has no rhyme or reason to it. While a few purchases were planned and researched, most of them are spur of the moment buys. I'll walk into a gun shop and see some oddball firearm and buy it. I have shotguns, handguns and rifles. I have World War Two vintage guns and new-fangled guns. I like variety I guess.

So, what kind of gun collector are you? Do you stick to certain types of firearms or is your collection pretty random?

I'm not a collector, more of an accumulator...

There's not much ryhme or reason to my assortment of firearms either.

No particular rhyme or reason to my collection. I started with handguns and have gradually gotten into long guns as well.

Now that I feel I have all the niches covered I plan my purchases by whatever catches my fancy.

I have a midwest kit, if it isnt a shooter I wont keep it. I have a favorite over all the rest its a Ruger 77/22 MkII bolt gun but I have more revolvers than anything else.

Lee-Enfield #4s and #5s.
It is not true collecting, but with so many sporterized rifles, providing a warm, safe home to preserve original rifles is the main goal.

A matching bolt/action is the other requirement.

Time to stop buying for a while and buy more ammo + components.

My only interest is classic military guns, other than the Savage .22 due to the very cheap ammo.

Im too broke to strictly have a collection. All of my guns are shooters, all but one are researched, I researched the hell out of my CZ 75, was gifted a marlin 336 from a very good family friend, bought my 2 marlin rimfires, and my mosin is my first rifle because I thought it was cool. I dont plan on getting rid of any ATM. If i have a firearm, Im going to shoot it (unless of course I dont have ammo for it )

I mainly keep "useful" firearms.

I have an AR15, a Beretta 92 for work, bought a .45 for fun and a .40 because I wanted to master the caliber.

Got two shotguns, one's for target shooting and one is for home defense. Wife has a shotgun too, but her's is prettier than mine.

Oh and I bought the Mosins because they were dirt cheap. And it turned out I LOVED THEM.

Back when I was able to collect and amass firearms, I had no rhyme or reason. I bought two firearms because of unusual design, a Beretta 86 (tipup barrel, selective double action .380) and a Browning Auto-22 rifle (takedown with the magazine in the buttstock), even though I had no real use for them. Another, a Ruger No. 1, I bought just because I've always liked its looks, although I don't hunt.

I tend to collect oddities and curios. I collect calibers like squirrels collect nuts. I have calibers that most obscure ammo specialists have never heard of. :)

  1. You don't need to justify what you buy. Buy what you think you need and what you like, no matter what it is. People have the right to comment on your choices if you disclose them. You have the right to ignore those comments.
  2. I used to casually collect military bolt actions. Now the biggest part of my collection is blued S&W revolvers. I didn't buy any of them solely for collection purposes. Anything I buy, I shoot, at least occasionally.

Another accumulator. I started collecting US military rifles, then got onto Smiths, then foreign military rifles, now I buy anything that I like the looks of, or that I don't already have. :p

Accumulator. WWII battle rifles, tube fed .22's that take S, L, and LR, C & R, Elephant gun, revolvers, semi's.

That makes two of us! Mine range from bought this past fall (a .22 Mag bolt rifle) to two guns that are between 80-95 years old. ;)
Six pistols (3 SA, 2 DA & 1 SA revolver), 5 rifles (3 bolts, 2 SA), and two shottys (pump and SxS). So far.

 :D

That sounds sort of like what my collection.

Most of my gyn purchases have been spur of the moment decisions. A couple of my guns were planned and researched. Most of them were not.

How many of you plan your gun purchases?

The only planning I do is to try and not replicate anything I already have. I understand the fascination of sticking to a certain genre' of firearms. But that would bore me to tears.

My collection is completely random. The reason why I have not chosen a particular line or vintage to collect is because I would then have to collect every piece to make it complete (collecting S&W 38 Spl snubbies, for example, could get very expensive). If I didn't have every one then I would be left yearning for the model I didn't have. By "going random" I can honestly say that I don't collect any particular line or vintage and keep from sending my family to the poor house. :)

That said, though, I do like interesting firearms that are more traditional vis-a-vis today's offerings. I do have a tricked out SKS with folding stock and optics, but this is because I got it for a steal. I don't own an AR, and my most recent purchase was a Marlin 1894 in .44. My kids call me "old school"...hmmm, maybe that is a good thing? :)

The most modern-looking firearms I own are my Springfield XD40 and Mossy 500. Most of my gun collection looks like it belongs in a museum.

Im like many others here. An accumulator... However, the last two years Iv been stung by the Smith & Wesson top break bug. That and American percussion revolvers. So far Iv been able to get two S&W Russians, well actually just one. The second one is a Ludwig Loewe... One S&W 32-44 target too. Percussion revolvers department has 2 Rogers & Spencers, one of them seriously improved, one standard. And then 2 Remington Navy. Im going too sell atleast one of the Remingtons. This hobby aint a cheap one. Way over my budget. Im using them all in the MLAIC competitions....

I used to get anything I could get my hands on with a focus on practicality.
then I finally found a handgun I liked enough to keep and stick with. (I say that now.)

Now I own/buy/collect fun guns. I enjoy my 10mm, I am eyeing a really cool looking Enfield Nr. 4 and love my lever action .22.

So is it all over the place? Yes. But my focus these days is fun.

I buy and collect mainly for CCW and HD or what i call "working" guns.
Before my collection was a basic "all-around" collection where i had one gun for every reason or use you could think of. But that went away as i slowly got rid of guns that i didn't feel were necessary.
Ill still sneak a fun gun in even tho its not needed like my Kahr MK9 i use as a bug, Its not needed but i wanted a gun that was cheap to shoot at the range but i could still call it a ccw.

I have one to cover all of the bases, for my needs. Enjoy shooting a lot of pistol so I have been concentrating on training and accumulating more and more.
