Rhyme or Reason?

I definitely plan my purchases. I'm a bit of a minimalist; I don't like keeping heaps of stuff around the house, guns included. I typically only have 3-5 guns at a time, and that covers both handguns & longarms. If a gun doesn't fill a purpose, I don't buy it. If a gun serves a purpose better than one I already have, I'll sell my current one and buy the new one. That doesn't happen often.

That said, all of my guns tend to be either revolvers or bolt-actions. I like guns that look classic, work well, but don't cost an arm & a leg.

I think you're on to something, Wolfeye; something that took me 57 years to figure out. Seems that the more you know, the less you need.

My wife wishes I was like you.:D

Unfortunately I am a maximist.

My problem is that I didn't know I wanted something until I find a good deal on it! That's the only pattern I see so far is they were all good deals!

Lizzie - One SA and one revolver were thought out purchases. The rest of the pistols were "inherited". All of the rifles and shotguns were planned.
The first shotty was a pump, then, I came across a second-hand side by side and saw more potential for the way I hunted. It had fixed chokes but a local gunsmith bored it out and put in screw-ins. Two chokes with 2 loads allows me to shoot light loads close-up and heavy loads way out there.
The first .22 rifle was a replacement for a Marlin Golden 39A levergun that was "taken" from me 20 years ago. It is a bolt gun as the 39A's have changed so dramatically since the one I got nearly 40 years ago. I also wanted greater accuracy for use in squirrel and varmit hunting. Then I got a 1022 semi in the early 90's. About 10 years ago, I started looking for a 1022 semi that would shoot magnums. No dice. Turns out, "mechanical problems" had forced them off the market. So I ended up with another bolt gun for the .22 Mag last summer.
I have 2 centerfire rifles, an AK clone from just before the AWB and a Remington .243 bolt for deer and larger varmits. Both were planned.
Hope this answers your question.

I'd have to say that my modest (everything's relative) collection is very diverse, but not random.
I've always kept my saving up for purchases to be purpose-driven, to aquire something that is better for a specific use than what I already have.
It has made for a diverse collection, but has also equated to being able to grab exactly the tool for the job at hand at any given moment, be it small game, big game, coke cans, HD, or going to town in any weather.
