And these aren't even liberal websites. I just can't stand to read anti gun statements and illogical, irrational left wing talking point nonsense.

I am SO glad places like THR exist. It just makes me too sick to hear what the spew at times. How they think someone else having a gun to defend themselves and others is the worst ting that could happen, that if a college student had a gun there would be drunken students shooting people every night and the US would once again become the wild west.

I just can't read it anymore. I know we need to stand up for our rights, and I will, but pointlessly going back and forth with brainwashed libs is just too much for me right now. I want to thank each and every one of you on this board, everyone on every other gun board, and everyone on any other board that stand up for our rights and for common sense. God bless all of you.

Ann Coulter recommends using the tough love approach when dealing with Liberals, minus the love part...

OK... I needed that. Something to chuckle about has been few and far between lately.

Me too TexasP226, me too...

I have a good friend in NYC. Smart, double major from NCSU. But he just DOES NOT GET IT!!!

I'm sick of arguing with him.

If they don't get it after what happened yesterday, they'll never get it!

:uhoh:

I went to pick up my 8yo son for lunch today. As I ws doing yardwork and other stuff I had a baseballstyle hat on. It is one of my NRA hats. All of my hats are either gun or hunting related. Well I was standing inthe playground waiting for the bell to ring, talking to other parents when a shrill scream came from my left. I turned to see a very upset mother walking in my direction. She walked up to me and while waving a finger under my nose demanded to know how I could wear that hat. In light of what happened how could I wear a hat supporting the NRA when it is people like them that allowed this to happen. She asked me if my views on guns have changed since yesgterday. I said yes. She got a really smug smile onher face. I said " Yesterday I felt that teachers should be allowed to carry guns to protect our children. Now I think it should be mandatory" She asked "how could you believe that?" I replied "How could you not."

Len,

That must have been a surreal experience.

I'd have a lot of trouble keeping my distain hidden if I got jumped by a rapid soccer mom.

You did well.

Here here. I've had hell with people trying to discuss guns on all the forums I visit, THR is like that nice vacation you need once in a while, except it's here for us every day.

I wish I could say I am that level headed but sadly it is only because I have to deal with these kinds of people so much that it is now like driving in heavy traffic. There was once a thread and I cant remember which board but they said In times like these it would be a good idea to think of responses to anti gun zealots before you encounter them. This way you have the upper edge and can speak in a logical, factual way. This more than anything else will win our cause. I took this to heart and use it for all kinds of situtations. Really good for anti gun zealots and my 8 and 12 year olds.

"Fight back! Whenever you are offered violence, fight back! The aggressor does not fear the law, so he must be taught to fear you. Whatever the risk, and at whatever the cost, fight back!"
- Col. Jeff Cooper

Good on you, Len!

As to the OP:
Time once again for one of my favorite movie lines: "You will meet people you do not understand. Do not try to make them understand you. For they are a breed apart and make no sense."
Daniel Day Lewis as "Natty Bumpo" quoting the advice of "Chingachgook" in the '90's version of The Last of the Mohicans.

Sometimes folks believe what they want to believe and the psychological wear of continuing to debate them is not worth the toll on one's limited life energy. You just gotta move on.

Whether we realize it or not, We are ALL the Gun community's Public Relations Department.

Everyone needs to sit down and come up with at least 10 "canned" responses for people like this.

The responses need to be short, concise, to the point, and accurate.

They must not be rude or stand-off-ish. You don't win PR battles saying what you REALLY want to say to this people.

Once you get up a list, memorize it, and then practice saying it in a calm, even-paced, manner. Delivery is important. Most people don't remember what you say, but only how you made them FEEL. Sad, really.

Here's mine......

-- My firearms are only there to defend the life and well being of myself and my family.

-- My firearms are there to provide personal protection until law enforcement can arrive.

-- My firearms pose no threat to anyone who isn’t trying to harm me or my family.

-- My firearms are owned by a rational and sane human being…..me.

-- My firearms have never hurt anyone.

-- My firearms have only been used as part of the shooting sports.

-- My firearms are used for legitimate hunting purposes.

-- My firearms are respected for what they are, and understood for what they can be.

And lastly……

Each of us has the God given right to defend ourselves and our families.

No one can deny me that right.

I've had a few exchanges since yesterday. The anti-gun argument is easy to take apart; however, it's frustrating debating fanatics: They will never be wrong, you will never be right.

Reasoning with Liberals

Living in CA, I have had a lot of experience arguing with liberals. I keep a few things in mind when attempting to get good head-strikes with my clue stick.

1) Imagine them as children, literally. Winston Churchill said "Anyone who isn’t a liberal by age 20 has no heart. Anyone who isn’t a conservative by age 40 has no brain." Imagine the stupid Prius-driving cow that takes exception to your NRA cap as a precocious, misguided little girl, that can vote. Don't say anything to a liberal that that you wouldn't say to a child because....

2) you'll make them f-e-e-l bad. As others have pointed out, feelings are everything. The news media knows this and they capitalize on it. Thus, the maudlin musical interludes I heard last night on the evening news reports. When a liberal feels bad, he must...

3) take personal action. Much like a child, the liberal is extraordinarily self-centered. The world revolves around him, and he is the worlds agent of change. You'll see evidence of this everywhere. The liberal can't grieve privately for the victims: she needs to make her feeling public though some sort of action--hence the proliferation of teddy-bears, candles, and other saccarine, sentimental periphenalia at scenes of tragedy. The idea to take away from this is to *personalize* your argument with a liberal. To them statistics and facts are so much air. You need to take advantage of their childlike self-centered nature. For example, to the child we would say,

"Sally, how would you feel if Bobby hit you?"

And to the liberal,

"Bob, don't you think you have a right to defend your family when the 210 pound felon is crashing through your front door?"

I can't stress enough that you need to insert them into your argument. I know a man that is probably to the left of Teddy Kennedy, except when it comes to captal punishment. Why? Someone close to him was murdered. He knows what that *feels* like.

Anyway, my 2 cents.

Ironically, on a forum I frequent where the demographics run well to the left, professional, '20s-early '30s, we had a very reasonable discussion on guns yesterday and today.

I suspect that your difficulty in "trying to reason with liberals" lies as much with you as it does with them.

I've been tangling with antis (not necessarily liberals) across a couple different leftish boards. About all I can say is that I got my point across, and I don't want to do it anymore.

Vote your convictions...know the candidates..be vocal..email them..let them know how you stand. As for arguing with the anti's, take a deep breath and consider the source..makes it easier. Then get back to the fray.

If you want to understand the liberal mentality then just look at who provides their financial support! Lawyers, trial lawyers, predator lawyers, lawyers with disgusting TV and radio ads trolling for business, lawyers with no moral fiber, and finally lawyers that will do anything to preserve their standard of living at any cost.
Then of course there's the media and movie stars which truly represent the epitome of honesty and morality??
Need I say more???
