I can't find the right nightstand gun!

A 45 in whatever flavor you like best, a G30 wit night sights works for me, and a nice maglight, the big one that you can also use as a baton or club.

Mine is a Sig 229 in a .357 Sig with a Sig Sauer Tactical light/laser. Everything I need for a surprise entry into my home. Somebody is gonna have a big hurt if they come into my house uninvited while I'm sleeping!

I didn't read most of this so....

Heavy, simple, 9MM, reliable, DA/SA: Star MODS 28, 30, 30M, 30MI, 30PK (alloy frame.)

I have a 30MI. It's a great gun and it's affordable. $250-$350 online frequently. S&W 5900 mags fit it so extras are available. Take down takes a minute. Star DA/SAs are the undiscovered, underpriced, ignored gems.

I have an S&W Model 64 loaded with .38 spl Federal Hydra-Shocks in my mini-vault. Got a Surefire flashlight & extra cell phone in there too. I can get to my Remington 870 w/ HD barrel in a hurry if God forbid things go that far. Wife has a 20-ga Remington Spartan coach gun over on her side. Simple yet effective. :)

If you like everything about the Kimber 1911 but the capacity, you can always get some Chip McCormick 10 Round Power Mags. The magazines are reliable. They stick out of the frame about 1 inch. That would not be good for concealed carry, but in a night stand role, I can't see how it would matter.

11 rounds of .45 acp might be enough for you. Otherwise, maybe a CZ 75.
