I have never been a Glock fan. Never hated them either, I thought of them as good handguns for a good price with too much hype. But, I thought, they are so... ugly! The grip is a little weird, they have no soul, and did I mention fugly? And all was well, I lived to bring glory to the 1911A1, created by a god among men. And then something happened. Something sinister and evil. I don't know why or how it crept into my mind and my soul but it planted a dark seed. One day I looked at a Glock and thought "Gee, that's kind of coo..." :what:

I didn't finish that thought for I knew where it would lead. I tried to throw it off, I really did. And then somewhat recently I was watching Dawn of the Dead('04 version). C.J. was "poppin' caps" in zombies down in the sewers with a Glock of some sort. And then it struck: "You know, it might be cool to have one of those." I still love 1911s but I think I actually want to buy a Glock. :banghead: I can't afford that right now and I don't NEED one, plus I still think the long-slide versions are fugly. But still...

Is there any hope for me?

There is hope for you yet.

I do the same thing every couple years. See a Glock, buy a Glock, fire a Glock, sell a Glock. If you haven't actually purchased one, then once you get past the "it's kinda cool" phase, you won't have to think about the "how much can I get for a used Glock" phase. Just hold onto your money, and fire a friends Glock or rent one once in a while instead.

Feanaro,

You are doing fine...it is good to see another one who has seen the light :).

Buy the Glock.

Just my .02,
LeonCarr

Buy a Glock, shoot it and see if you like it. If you can put 1000 rounds through it and not like it you will be unlike the vast majority of shooters. If you can put 1000 rounds through it and not respect it you either got a lemon or are a very rare personality indeed.

Come over to the Dark Side and The Schwarz will be with you.
Biker

(Insert sinister laugh here)

(Now, cut to booming bass voice)

ALL YOUR GLOCK ARE BELONG TO US!

Now, you are undone. Feel the polymer. Rub the Tenifer gently. Insert the magazine and you are lost; the power of the Glock side has over come you.

Rack the slide and watch the round enter the sanctity of the chamber with a sinister snick. Pull the trigger--feel the recoil--watch the muzzle blast!

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!

Now, 17's, 22's, 20's and 21's will rule your life. A 26 or 27 will watch from your pocket. The conversion is complete.

I am also almost at this point, and I absolutely HATE the idea of it, I have never wanted a Glock, I think they are ugly, and like you, I feel that they have no soul, but I recently took a 2 day Tactical Pistol class which has pushed me to the edge of buying one of these godless handguns.

My beloved Steyr, which has never had a problem just punching holes in paper started having FTE's, and it got worse going through the first day. I got it home and did a detail strip and clean, making sure the extractor was free of dirt and lightly lubed. The morning of the second day of class I had 2 FTE's within 10 minutes, so I ditched it and went to my CZ40P.

The CZ40P worked great (Though it does need a trigger job) but it added another step to all the drills, I had to remember to de-cock. I missed the simple action of the Steyr.

At the beginning of the class there were only 2 people without Glocks, me and another fella with a Sig, on the second day I was the only one without a Glock (The sig guy brought his G17) and during the whole class everytime I had a problem with my steyr, or forgetting to de-cock when doing tac-reloads they would all yell (in jest) "Get a Glock"

I hate to admit it, but I see a G19 in my future soon. :uhoh:

I cheated on my 1911's with a Glock and a Steyr. I told them I was sorry and would never stray again. Im a good boy from now on. When I see or shoot a Glock I tell my 1911's I was confused.

After trying both a Glock and Steyr it made me appreciate my 1911's. The Steyr does have some redeeming qualities, but despite that fact I still favor my 1911's.

Please, no one hit me...
I don't own a Glock, I don't own a 1911.
I've rented both...
I prefer the Glock 17 to the Springfield 1911 loaded I shot.
Please, don't shoot me...

You will love the Glock and your 1911's will sit in the safe. Days, weeks will pass and they will gradually go to sleep. Your shooting days will be spent enjoying your ever multiplying Glocks. You know you've handled nicer guns, but the memories seem a bit fuzzy. Finally, after not shaving for months and mumbling to passers-by about how great Glocks are, you will open your safe to handle another one. Something will catch your eye, a glint from fine stainless steel. You'll find an old model 1911 and wonder when it got there. The pistol will respond though. Gradually waking up and wondering why its owner has aged.

Then, you'll buy a firearm from FN and wonder why you ever spent money on something else. ;)

Go say 10 hail mary's, 5 our fathers, slaughter 100 stormtroopers, and all will be forgiven, my young padawan...

I also owned a glock...
And sold it...

At the time, I thought I developed an aversion to the 9mm cartridge.
After shooting a BHP, I realized I just realized there was better out there.

I just dont understand people with 10+ glocks. They're all identical. At least with 1911's you can spend money on grips and accessories like women buy shoes and jewelry. That's half the fun!

Feanaro,
Go wash your hands with strong soap for 15 minutes, then disenfect with alcohol. Cleanse your innards with 3 oz of Tenesee Whisky.

Then you need to see the chancre mechanics and ask for a pro kit!
Prostrate yourself before an icon of JMB for 24 hours, re innoculate yourself with some quality (1911) range time and you will be forgiven.

Sam

Is there any hope? Yes there is. It's called an XD. You get the plastic, the grip angle, internal extractor, and the grip safety. Only thing you give up is the .45ACP. :D

yeah, I've had a model 23 for about ten years

never been my favorite, sometimes wonder why I bought it, occasionally think of selling it. Funny, whenever I shoot it, I don't think about selling it for a while. Someone else hit the nail on the head--I don't love it, but I respect it. Just like my sledge hammer, it can sit unnoticed and unused forever, but if I pick it up, it will work. Just a tool, it isn't pretty and I don't connect to it on an emotional level. Don't want another one, but I'll probably keep this one...

Nothing wrong with owning a Glock. Think of it as a good thing to demonstrate to new shooters. I will probably own a Glock for the same reason I will probably own a Beretta 92. For all its souless fugliness, the Glock is an icon. (But even the M9 has some soul.)

When I look at a new pistol, (I am enamored of CZ right now,) I don't look at it as cheating on the 1911, cause most of them aren't something just like the 1911. DA, de-cockers, accesory rails, polymer & aluminum, all add up to an apples and oranges sort of thing. Actually, I expierence the most guilt when I look at another 1911, (The GSR is especially guilt-inspiring.)

Had The Same Thought....

....that I would NEVER own a Glock. Then in my favorite gunshop handled a G19 and thought "Gee, its not THAT ugly..." and "Sure looks easy to conceal..." and "Its not too expensive...". Bought the G19 on the spot...its the only Glock I own but DO like it.

Liked it even more after taking it to the range, found it pleasant/accurate/RELIABLE to shoot after 300 rds.

But really sold it for me was taking it home, stripping/cleaning/re-assembling in 10-15 minutes. Thinking about my 1911's and revolvers I thought "Where has THIS been all my life..!" Yeah, so, I hate cleaning firearms - sue me.

Now for me a criteria to decide on whether to buy a gun is:

1) Can I use it for CCW
2) Is it accurate and pleasant to practice with
3) How easily can I clean it?

Sure, right now the G19 is in the safe and I have my 1911 ready for carry. but my moods change and I'm sure the roles will be reversed and I won't feel under gunned. :D

Glocks aren't too bad. I don't know why so many guys knock them.

I have a G30, the Sig is coming in at the end of the week.

I do see a G19 in my future as well as a 9mm Sig. :D

I dunno.... maybe it's just me, but I think all gun owners should have at least one of everything made, in their gun collection. Glock, Colt, Ruger...you name it. No need in leaving anybody out.

Of course, we'd all be needing much larger gun safes....

Still, I'm betting it's a sacrifice we'd all be willing to make.

So Feanaro, quit feeling dirty and go have fun with a Glock. And then a 1911. And then a Sig. And then a....

;)

As another 1911 guy who revisited the Glock a year or so ago, I don't see any reason not to own one. The Glock is (in a modern sense), much of what the 1911 was when JMB introduced it: an utterly reliable, effective sidearm. Unfortunately many 1911s today leave behind the reliable part. I found the transition simple as there were no new controls to learn--the safety is just missing. The Glock trigger can be tweaked to a light pull that to me feels much like a long single-action. For some purposes, I like them a great deal. My dedicated HD gun is a Glock 21, with M3 light, and a +2 mag. Nothing wrong with 16 rounds of 230gr JHPs on tap, in this 1911 guy's mindset. For the Mrs. I can bring up my G17. Friendly for those with small hands, and mild recoil. Lots of rounds on tap before she has to worry about doing anything other than pull the trigger. I added some better sights, had the trigger tweaked. Neat pistol really.

Having said that, don't part with your 1911s either. I carry my CDP Pro more than anything else just because I like it. It is more accurate than my 21, and single stack mags take less space when carrying concealed. I have also not abandoned the CZ pattern guns. I can really shoot my Jericho well, and have an SP-01 on the way. Both 1911 and CZ have shooting characteristics I prefer to the Glock, fit my hand better, and are more accurate in my experience. But if one wants a pistol that will go bang every time, is easy to operate/maintain, and is easy on the pocket book, it is hard to beat a Glock.
