I took my teenage son to the range today to break in his new birthday present – a Rem 700 in 30/06. He has a couple of friends that he has known for years. Real nice kids. Their mom, who is also a friend of ours, leans a little to the left of Hillary Clinton and absolutely HATES guns. Well, my son asked me if I would take his friends to the range with us. I told him that that is not a decision I could make. The boys would have to ask their mom, and if it was OK with her, I would be glad to have them come along.

My son called their house, and the next you know, he said to me, “Mrs. XXXX would like to speak with you.” I’m thinking to myself, even though none of this was my idea, “Uh-oh. Here it comes. I’m about to get ripped a new one.” After a chilly greeting she said to me, “So, I hear you want to take my sons shooting. I don’t like this at all, you know.” We’ve known each other for quite a while, so my response was, “Not really shooting. We just need someone down range to hold the targets while we shoot at them.” Knowing full well this is the last thing in the world that I would ever have them do, this got her to laugh a little and helped loosen things up. She asked a ton of questions about what is involved, so I explained all of the safety rules required at the range and that I would give the boys a safety lesson before they even touched a firearm. She was still apprehensive, but to her credit, she felt the boys were old enough to begin to make their own decisions, so she agreed to let them go.

We got the range in the afternoon. At 16 degrees F, it wasn’t the best day to be teaching someone how to shoot, but the boys were dressed warm and were very excited to begin. I explained all of the range rules and safety procedures once again (they were drilled and quizzed on the ride down). Once I was comfortable that they understood everything, I brought out their first firearm, a massive semi-automatic Barrett in .50 BMG. Just kidding. It was really a single shot bolt action .22 with iron sights that I learned to shoot with when I was a kid. I explained sight alignment, trigger control, etc. and set them up one at a time at the shooting bench on the 50-yard plinking range. We started out shooting at a paper targets so I could get a feel for how well they would do. To my surprise, one of the boys put almost 10 out of 10 shots into a 3” bullseye at 50 yds. His brother did almost as well. I guess all of those hours shooting at bad guys on the X-Box must pay off.

Once I felt comfortable that they would both handle a firearm safely, I brought out another bolt action .22, a couple of boxes of ammo, and let them go at it. I set up a bunch of clay birds on the berm and let them blast away. For two kids who were never allowed to be near any firearm before, they both did amazingly well. They were breaking clay birds left and right. They ended up going through almost 200 rounds apiece and had a great time. I didn’t get to shoot much today since I was hanging back and watching the new guys, but seeing what a good time they had and their excitement at busting up the targets was just as much fun. They both thanked me and are looking forward to doing it again. Once of them even said, ”Shooting for real is MUCH more fun than video games.” Amen brother. Now, if I could just get their mom to the range.....

Haha, thats great. I'm gonna rip you off and use that someday.

Good job in introducing new shooters, and good job handling the Hillary worshipping mom.

The great thing about us liberals is we are open minded and willing to listen. If the right arguments are presented we are willing to change our opinions also. We are also willing to allow others (such as her son) to think for themselves and make their own decisions.:)

If you play it right, you might develop a turncoat. Take her to the range with the boys next time.:) . Anyway, congratulations....am sure the boys will remember for a lifetime...a good memory of childhood.

Excellent! :D  Very. Cool. Kids are the lifeblood of the RKBA and every young one who is safely introduced to the shooting sports is an asset.

Hate to say this, but you may have already passed up your best chance to get their mom to the range. When she got on the phone with you, and was asking about the safety protocol, was the time to invite her to come along "and see that we do things safely ..."

All is not lost, however. Next time the boys want to come along, issue the invitation then. Frame it just like that -- not a suggestion that she might want to shoot too, but an invitation to come along and see what her sons are doing. Once you've got her on the range, you can invite her to join the fun.

Here's hoping!

You should call her up and tell her about how good her boy did at shooting.

On her end it takes a lot of trust to let your kid go out and do something like that with someone else. Must means she thinks you know your stuff.:)

You done REALLY good. You made the trip about THEM and not you.
It was fun, safe and they had a great time.

What di your son think of his 30-06?

Congratulations and well done

Fantastic! My sons are just coming to the age where I will be taking them to the range and I plan to use some of your lines on their parents.

Thanks for sharing and thanks for keeping the lifeblood of our sport growing.

I did ask her to come along, but her response was a very adamant "NO!". I really didn't want to push her and have her change her mind about letting her sons go. I'll keep working on her, but I'll have to tread lightly.

Thanks. My son absolutely loved his 700. Breaking in a barrel is quite a chore and not a lot of fun, but it was a good thing for him to learn. The recoil didn't bother him at all (my main worry) and he was vaporizing the clay birds with it.

This post made my day. Pat yourself on the back, you did a good thing. You may have just changed the lives of these two young men. Infact you might have even helped to save there life in the future.

Ah, ha! the difference between a liberal and a leftist!

My experience contradicts everything you state in your post.

I'm glad YOU'RE open-minded, willing to listen and change your opinions, but the fact that you're posting constructively on THR already draws a line (opens a great gulf?) between you and most liberals. SO, while the great thing about YOU may be all the things in your post, it absolutely does not apply to most liberals, in my experience.

many liberals like and or tolerate guns than most think

I'm glad the boys had a great experience and think "real life" is better than an xbox.

I think view of the stereotypical gun grabbing liberal elite is akin to stereotypical conservative uneducated redneck. Surely both exist, but they are the exceptions and not the rule.

Unfortunately for you, I think your experiences have actually been with leftists in liberal's clothing. Lefties are as bad as neo-cons...just in different ways. A big giveaway for the leftists is their love of tie-dye and hemp clothing. or if they gloat about being a vegan. :)

No.

No to your thought and no to your attempt to slice/dice/redefine.

It requires more than a few liberals with an unusual conglomeration of views to redefine the entire class. ;)

Then I guess all republicans are spend crazy, give to the wealthy, step on the little man kind of people. Unfortunetly the loudest minoirty sets perception. And the far right has spent alot of money trying to portrait liberals as being leftists and vice versa.:)

I'd like to hear Hilary say that...
