I hate Gunbroker.com,,,
Okay, maybe hate is too strong a word,,,
But they have a listing that is exactly what I've wanted for years.

Way back in time when dinosaurs ruled the earth,,,
My great-uncle Bantie used to take me for a week in the summers.

One of the highlights of the week there was shooting Bantie's pistols,,,
He had a pair of .22 single-shots cased like dueling pistols,,,
They were old fashion looking with break-open action,,,
I don't know for sure but I think they were Stevens.

Bantie and my aunt Lou lived out in the boonies in West Virginia,,,
When Bantie would come home from work we would go out back and shoot them.

He would take that six-pack of Schlitz he always seemed to have,,,
We would sit on this big log while he drank a beer,,,
Then toss the steel can for me to shoot at,,,
If I was lucky I got a sip or two.

Now don't get all freaky about kids, guns, and alcohol not mixing,,,
This was in the mid-fifties and things were different,,,
He never shot me and I never shot him.

Aunt Lou would sit on the porch and watch the two of us,,,
They never had kids of their own so they really treated us nephews and nieces.

Those few weeks I spent with them are some of my fondest childhood memories,,,
These trips and shooting sessions happened when I was 5 & 6 years old,,,
We moved west to Oklahoma very soon after that,,,
I didn't see uncle Bantie again until I was 24.

It was at my grandparents 50th anniversary/family reunion when I saw him again,,,
He and aunt Lou were in their late 70's by the time of that event,,,
I was in the USAF just returned from a tour in Germany.

I told him how I remembered those evenings on that log with those pistols,,,
And how they comprised one of my fondest childhood memories,,,
He remembered those times and said he still had the guns,,,
When he asked me if I wanted them I almost cried.

So the next day we drove the 3 hours to their home in central Virginia,,,
We rummaged around in the attic until we found the wooden case,,,
I was devastated when we opened it as the pistols were gone.

He said that many years ago one of my hillbilly cousins stole a lot of stuff from him,,,
Bantie said he must have taken those guns and left the box to hide the theft.

Then he asked me if I remembered shooting his German 8mm Mauser,,,
I did remember it because it almost knocked me down,,,
I only fired 2 rounds and decided that was enough.

We climbed down from the attic and started getting ready to return to my grandparents home,,,
Bantie went into his office/den and came out carrying an old canvas rifle case,,,
He handed it to me and said "Would you like this instead?",,,
It was that 8mm Mauser, his WW-II bring-back.

He told me the story of how he picked it up in some no-name French village,,,
It was always his plan to sporterize it but he never had it done,,,
I'm glad as it was a true K-98 German Mauser.

I never saw uncle Bantie again,,,
He passed away a few years after that,,,
I still have the Mauser in it's original configuration,,,
And fondly remember him and shooting Schlitz cans from that old log.

The reason I'm writing about this is,,,
I've always wanted to put together a pair of single-shots like his,,,
And now there is not just one but a pair of them in very nice shape on Gunbroker.

Man but that auction offering brought those memories flooding back to me,,,
I'm going to make my best bid on the pair and hope for the best,,,
I know they aren't Bantie's pistols but they are close enough.

Wish me luck.

You have a point CDW4ME,,,

You have a point CDW4ME,,,
But I get the feeling this is going to cost me some money. :(

I might have to break a personal rule,,,
And make a gun purchase on a credit card,,,
I've always paid cash for every gun I have bought.

The "buy it now" price is $600,,,
I haven't placed my own bid just yet,,,
I'm waiting a bit to see what interest they draw.

Great memories. Wish I had some like that to cherish. Best of luck on the auction. I just posted my first sale on there. If you can guess which one it is, and are the high bidder you could win it. lol

No, it's not the pistols.

Used gunbroker for 9 transactions (firearms) in the last 6 years. Better deal and less hassle. Glad they do what they do.

Nice story, good luck on the auction

Somewhere out there is a S&W 686 357Mag that I sold to my brother in law,
Nickel-plated,black Pachymar grips, 6" barrel ,
I had bought it the same time a childhood friend had bought his S&W in 44-MAG, they looked alike cept for the bullets,, we used to spend countless hours in an old quarry shooting them things, About 10 years ago, I decided to sell mine for another pistol, and it wasn't too long after that, my friend ended up wrapping his Camaro around a tree killing himself and his cousin
I approached the family a couple days after the funeral, and told them how much it would mean to me to purchase at fair price, his pistol just for memories sake.
Turns out his crack-head brother had stole it and pawned it off for cash to unknown persons, so I'll never have the original pair we bought together cause my in-law is a jerk, and he wont sell me my own gun back to me,, heck he doesn't even shoot it

That's OK though, cause GB has a good selection of GP-100's !!!

Actually, gunbroker has been good to me,,,

I've acquired several handguns for my collection,,,
I would never have found in my neck of the woods.

I really want that pair of single-shots,,,
According to the Standard Catalog of Firearms,,,
$600.00 would be top dollar for those guns in "good" condition.

I'm rather a cheap bas---- though,,,
That's a real chunk of change to spend on nostalgia.

I understand wanting a gun that a friend owned,,,
Just over a year ago my very best friend died quite suddenly,,,
We went shooting quite often and she always brought her nickel model 34.

On her 11th birthday her dad took her to a gun store,,,
He told her she could have any 22 revolver she wanted from their stock.

I commented on her good taste,,,
And asked her why she chose that S&W.

Her reply to me was,,,
"It was shiny."

I was helping her Brother with the details for her funeral,,,
I told him I would gladly pay full market value for that little S&W.

He just handed it to me and said,,,
"It's yours."

It goes with me every range trip,,,
"Little Sister" quickly became one of my favorite handguns.

Log in to GB, go to the advanced search, select the 'Completed Items' tab, and look for those guns. If they have been relisted many times with no bids, not reaching the reserve, etc. then you may pick them up for less than you think.

In my life travelling the world, I have found that truth is stranger than fiction.

That being said, wouldn't it be ironic if the pair being sold on Gunbroker were being sold by the asswipe who stole your Uncles.
Just sayin'.
