My very first actual in my own name purchase permit. (In MI, freedom is limited a long guns, handguns require a permit).

I got two permits today. One is earmarked for a Buckmark. Waiting for a PM back on that one. (Please, please, please pm me back....please...)

The other? I dunno. I have a 9mm. A S&W Model 59. It's fine. I'm bored though. Not even of the gun so much, but of the round. Not much recoil, that high snapping sound. I don't have anything bigger. I'm getting the .22. Don't need to get a carry gun yet since my CPL won't arrive for a while yet. I liked shooting a .40, and I like watching and listening to other people shoot .45's, although I've never had the pleasure

Can't spend a lot of money. Definitely under $400. Thinking of maybe a Blackhawk in .357mag. Possibly a used RIA 1911. I can get either one of those used without breaking the bank too much. Leaning more towards a revolver, mostly because of the cost of spare mags. This really is my "bonus" gun purchase, just for fun, and because I've been good and held off of all gun purchases since September because money was too tight.

And yet, this is gonna be my first handgun, that I own entirely--not "my husband's gun but I use it more". It should be special. Special and cheap: two seriously opposing interests. Hm.

Alternatively, I could just buy enough .22lr to last a lifetime and enough spare mags to last a range session, and just stick with the .22. But there's this extra permit sitting in my wallet...

Smith and Wesson

Look at the Smith and Wesson MP series or a Sig. You can get both in a .40, and thats a nice and comparable size to the 59. Finding a S&W 4000 series, 4006, 4013 etc is good and likely cheap. They can normally be found in the $300 range used and are similar to the model 59.

Of course, everybody needs a .22, so you could always just get one of those.

Go check out Budsgunshop.com. They've got some great deals on XDs and M&Ps right now. You can get an XD-40 Service or Tactical for under $450 new including shipping.

One I'm looking at that fits that, plus is a .40 (another you were considering) is the Bersa Thunder Ultra Compact. It's available in .45, too. I've got two friends that have them and love them.

Well, I got a gun. I seriously overpaid. Went to a shop I've browsed in a lot, and really wanted to give them some business. I also wanted to keep in cheap and I wanted a revolver. I got of the those little Heritage Manufacturing SA .22lr/wmr. I refuse to admit in a public forum how much I paid.

Hm, yeah, I feel gypped already. The "keep small gun shops in business" tax was too high on this one. But I have a fun little gun and the little that I've read on them seems to indicate that they work ok and aren't terribly well-made. I just really liked the way it felt in my hand. It just felt good.

Ok, start laughing now...

Purchase permit? My GOD, i thought that was only in socialist countries of Europe.... I'd move.

Thanks for providing the obligatory dumping on my state. As soon as Texas gets the Great Lakes, I'll move.

And we have handgun purchase permits (which is pretty identical to the NICS things anyway, except in the extra hoop through which to jump) whereas you have all kinds of businesses posting legally binding gun-ban signs (or so I gather from reading here).

I call it even, except this is home and I never want to leave.

C'mon guys, I seriously overpaid for a crappy gun, which also happens to be my first handgun. Don't I get a little mocking for that, or a congratulations on my new gun?

CONGRADULATIONS ON OVERPAYING FOR A NOT THAT CRAPPY GUN! lol Seriously, I had a Hawes single action for my first handgun, shot pretty straight and I learned on it and popped a lot of bulk pack .22 out of it a many an afternoon. I've not heard BAD things about the Heritage. I don't know for sure, but you probably wanna carry that thing with the cylinder under the hammer empty. I don't think it has a hammer block or transfer bar.

BTW, I just show 'em my CCW, buy on the spot, in background check. :D Now, the CCW is a PITA, though. Notary, finger prints, photos, paperwork, class EVERY four years. I'm beginning to wonder if it's worth it now that they passed the new laws that we can carry in a vehicle out of sight, but with ready access. The national political climate is such I just might have to lose my carry in that salt water bay out there, I mean, if the law asks.

Why would I laugh about that? If it didn't fit you then I might have, but all in all I gotta think more people need to buy guns that fit them. Too many turn it into a caliber war, that said I have a 22 WMR Ruger 77 rifle that is my do all rifle. Great round in my opinion.

Yeh, with a CPL in MI it's the same, all you need is the CPL. CPL is still in process. Well, not quite in process. Well, scheduled the class, at least... :)

My first shotgun was also a seriously low-end, basic model. Seems I always go for the low end stuff until I figure out what I need in high end. I look at revolver thread here and I can't figure what the differences are in different models or why anyone would care. After shooting my bad shotgun for a couple years, I knew what I needed, and I now have a great shotgun.

Still feel dumb that I overpaid for it though.

Bridgewalker, Congrats on your first handgun. Too bad I beat you to that one... twice. I still like my Walter over a revolver, but to each is their own.

Did you try shooting a revolver? A cowboy-style single-action revolver? Just a completely different thing. Fun too. I already have a semi (well, Thain does, but still...)

ANd one more gun planned for this week. Gun show on Saturday. No idea what to get, or if we'll get anything at all.

Good luck at the show, hopefully they have a lot of different ammo there for you to try.
