I know you hate Kimber 1911s but ....

Maybe not as much now but as recent as a couple of years ago Dan Wesson was giving a lot more for less than a Mimber, now they give a lot more for a little more or the same.

I don't think it's that simple. It's not always easy to get exactly what you want in terms of the frame, barrel and slide, but it's easy to upgrade parts on a pistol . If you want/need a rail, Dan Wesson can't help you. More specifically, if you want a .45 ACP pistol with a 3" barrel, an all stainless steel officer sized frame with front strap checkering, and a stainless steel slide with some form of coating, what are your options? The Super Carry Ultra has those features and the MIM can be replaced very easily for less than $300. As I've said before, one of the reasons I like Kimbers is that they have frames and slides that I like both in terms of materials and features and also in terms of aesthetics. Those aren't easy to change but the rest is easy to upgrade.

Point taken, but I have always judged anything I buy by the overall quality first and accoutrements second.

There's a reason why Kimbers are popular, not arguing that. But I think 20% of their buyers have logical thought out reasons like you and some where near the bulk of the rest were convinced along the way that there's not a better 1911 on the market. Probably by their local Master Dealer.

If only we could talk Kimber into not stamping "Kimber" on the left side of the frame anymore.

The best pistols in 8/10 stores in the Ohio area are Kimbers. Not many stores have customers interested in pistols that cost more than $1000. Helps to have a shooting range though.

... these three would make a really nice set. I thought I was done buying Kimbers but I really like these Super Carry models. Are they new models? They all come in my favorite configuration which is stainless steel frames and slides with a coating over the stainless. OK ... they're full of MIM and Kimber can be hit and miss if you believe the "experts" on the internet ... but I like 'em and I know how to make Kimbers run well. Does anyone own one of these models? Anyway, these Kimbers appeal to me on a level that's hard to explain so I won't even try.

Man I just can't stand Kimber's version of the bobtail.

Which bobtail do you prefer? Is it quite rounded compared to say an Ed Brown or Dan Wesson but not a deal-breaker for me.

I looked at one of the new Kimbers yesterday. I generally like Kimber well enough, but the one I looked at had the worst MSH to frame fit I think I have seen in a pistol. There was probably full 1/8 of an inch difference in the edge of the MSH to the edge of the frame at the bobtail. This surely had to be an assembly of two "off the line" parts, and with no fitting done at all. It was nothing near as nice as pictured here.

The rest of it looked pretty slick, but that ruined it for me.

Cards81fan, could you go back and snap a photo or two? My LGS doesn't stock Kimber otherwise I'd happily do that. Here are some photos of the bobtail I did on my Kimber Stainless Raptor Pro II using an Ed Brown chainlink MSH. You can see that the MSH doesn't blend seamlessly into the frame below the grip safety. There's a considerable "flat" that I could blend in but I'd lose the detail of the chainlink. If the Super Carry is like my Raptor, it wouldn't be a problem for me. By the way, my Ed Brown SFC MSH looks very similar to the Raptor in terms of how it's blended into the frame.

1st Kimber

I've had numerous 1911's over the past few years... Colt, S&W, and currently and ED Brown. I kept putting off buying a Kimber for one reason or another.
Everyone I spoke with kept saying to stay away from 3" 1911's due to the reliabilty issues. After years of conducting my own research, I decided to go with my gut feeling. Recently I picked up the Ultra Stainless Raptor II ...:what: This pistol is beautiful and the tolerance levels are outstanding. To assist with the so-called "feeding issues" associated with 3" 1911's, I chose Wilson Combat magazines. So far .... not a single malfunction.
The main prurpose for getting this stubby Kimber was to have a small and (real) concealable .45 ....

I've read that too, but I would still like to buy at least one 3" or 3-1/2" 1911, if for no other reason than to form my own opinion. Right now I'm comparing the Springfield Loaded Ultra Compact Stainless Steel to the Kimber Super Carry Ultra HD. The Kimber would need about $300 in upgrades that I can easily do myself. The Springfield is about $400 less but it needs front strap checkering, the ILS removed and some form of coating along with a few better quality parts. In terms of final cost, there probably wouldn't be a big difference.

I'll see what I can do as far as the pic. The gap IIRC was at the rounded part of the bobtail so it was more evident that if it were at the flats.

Some pics of the Super Carry Pro MSH...

That looks pretty good to me! Is the MSH aluminum since your frame is aluminum?
