I need to ask myself what I really want.

I'm getting rid of a few expendables to make room in my safe not to mention obtain funds for another purchese. I want a semi auto battle rifle in either a .30-06 or .308. I'm lookig at either a FAL, M1A or M1 Garand. I really want an M1A but they are pricey. Are they worth it? I have more guns than I have time to go to the range and am getting rid of guns that just don't do it for me anymore. I want to hear from those of you with experience with these types of rifles and tell me what you think.

Thanks, Flip.

first... don't get rid of a gun that makes you second guess if that is the thing to do - you will regret that.

second, when you buy guns, you must always buy what you want - not necessarily what is practical or makes sense at the time. if you don't, you will always have that nagging feeling in your gut, and ultimately will end up w/ it anyway - it will just cost more and take longer to do. meanwhile, whatever gun you bought instead, will never be good enough, no matter how good it actually is, because you will forever compare it to the gun you 'should have got'...

so... pauli is right. you need to buy what you want.

I guess I'm halfway there. I sold off my Marlin 1894C and my Sar-l freeing up almost 750.00. I just hope they're worth their asking price. I looked at the Chicom M-14's and they're up there too plus with the cost of converting over to a GI bolt, I might as well buy a M1A. My AK and lever gun as good as they are are not what I want to keep. I haven't shot those in a long while.

fals are everywhere, all parts and mags are cheaper, if you ever have to leave the country to get the zombie hordes, the fal is a worldwide weapon. 308 ammo made from s. america or former british empire countries , such as u.s. , can, s africa, etc. is good , consistent, and acc. last but not least , cheap.

This is America, and its hard for me to believe that FAL parts are any more common here than M14 and M1 Garand parts.

Also, I don't foresee any of us here being able to take our rifles out of the country. Yes, I agree FAL parts might be more common than M1 parts in the Congo, but what difference will that ever make to 99.99% of us?

They're all suppose to be great, reliable guns. I'd go with the M1A socom. It is powerful and can be used for long range and CQB. The M1 Garand is a good gun, but it is larger than the M1A, older, and has the stripper clips that hold 8 instead of 20 rounds. The FAL is good too, but I just feel that the M1A is built more solid.

I have both a DCM M1, and a Springfield Armory National Match M1A. Both are exceptional rifles. If I had to choose between them, I would probably choose the M1A, due to its detachable 20 round magazines, and its use of .308, which is more widely available than .30-'06.

But you cannot go wrong with either of these fine rifles.
