I notice now most of us older guys (50+)

I'm 26. I own 4 times as many revolvers as semi-autos and carry a revolver daily. My favorite handgun is a S&W 27-2 5" and it would be last handgun I would part with. I don't think age has anything to do with it. I see a lot of older people shooting Glocks these days.

Not this old fart!

I'm 67. Shot my first revolver, a 625 4", about 5 years ago. Bought it because I was tired of picking up brass and at that time, 45 ACP brass was all over the place. Since then, I've added a 686 2", and a Freedom Arms 44 mag. Stupidly sold a 626 but glad to get rid of a 340PD which hurt even with bunny loads.

Now, I'm looking to get a 617 and drool over a 627 as I love 357. May pickup a 610 but not sure I want to add another round to reload. Rather get a long barreled 44 mag, either S&W or Ruger.

I keep a Sig 226 with 17 rounds at the bedside. Wife keeps an old Sig 228 on her side. But only shoot these to keep in touch, so to speak.

That you're a shopaholic? [\quote]

Moi?<innocent look>

I only bring home the derelict an' lonely. Them 3 Kimbers, the Wilson an' the 2 S&W's in the past 6 weeks ALL fell into that category!

That's mah story - an' ah'll keep tellin' it 'til ya believe me!

I'm still on the comfortable side of 30 (barely), and I prefer wheel guns to autos, although I don't own a revolver right now. I had a Ruger GP 100 and it went down the gun trade trail and I've regretted it since about five minutes after I traded it. I now carry a Smith and Wesson auto, and would much rather have the Ruger.

Some kid at the range this morn ask "what are you shooting those worthless things for"
they cost as much as a Glock and you only get 5 shots....I was shooting my SP101
implying that I was old and stupid for not shooting an auto.
I told him I have 9mm SIG with 15 shots so dont worry about it in my bag.....but I'll reach for the SP first.

At age 22, I bought my first pistol a Erma in a 380, still have it, fun to shoot hard to cock, and in a enclosed booth the top of head gets the empties. Second pistol a Beretta model 84, nice well balanced tool. Thru the years I find pistol that I want and I buy them and looking over time, (49 now) I go back and forth between Semi and revolvers and would say equal amount of both have passed thru my hands.

But in the grand picture Revolvers are the pistols I shoot the most, but carry a Semi-Auto, Keltec today. tomorrow who knows.

I like to shoot and whatever gets you to the range, then use it.

Thanks, Alex

I think it's a bit of many who get into handguns start with
the lower entry cost of a semi-auto .22 LR and then look at
centerfire options and the new polymer semis keep them in the low
cost areana like the Glock and M&P. The entry cost of a S&W
DA is a lot more than going the SIngle action clone route and guys
think the reloading of a SA is so laborius versus swapping a mag out
- most would probably stick with only one extra mag. eh?

I'm 58 -started with a borrowed hi-standard dura-matic for ages
13-14 from an UNcle. At some point he decided it was time I got my
own and his son was ready and old enough to have the gun back in his
house. I save lawn mowing money and my Dad matched my savings
and I got a S&W Model 18 .22 LR 6 shot for $78. My 3 or 4 buddies
in my teens that also had .22 handguns had an assortment of H&R top
breaks or cheap Great Western SA handguns that were probably half the
price of my S&W now 40 years later their guns are not
worth much more than they paid for them originally. A used 18 is $450?
and the re-intro'd 18 is msrp $ 900? I've got a 617 6" Bbl.
that I got 3 years ago for $630 when it msrp'd at $720 and now the
msrp is over $800 New buyers look at that and balk, and look
at a Ruger Mk III or Browning BUckmarks for several hundred less.

I also have a 625 to replace a 25-2 I had years ago as well as a
model 60 these S&Ws are the quality of handguns I want to pass
along to my grandkids and use them to intro and teach them about
handgun shooting it's a learn to walk first then we'll work on running
i.e. graduate up to semi-atuos learn accuracy first since you might only
have 6 shots and not make up for lack of accuracy with quanity of shots.

I also like semi-atuos I carried a 1911 in the USN and have a S&W 1911
as well as a CZ 75B in 9mm luger for an economy range gun.

I practice DA shooting as well as the precise SA shots with my
revolvers at the range. It's nice to have a bunch of full moon clips
loaded up and some kid with a glock and two mags is in the next booth
and he has pauses reloading mags and he listens to the old guy next
door with a steady rain of Booms from my 625 .45 ACP heh

Not that I don't like, or wouldn't trust, a revolver but I prefer autos.
I'm 2 years shy of your "old guy" line so maybe thats the reason.
My 19 y.o. son, on the other hand, is a revolver fanatic so go figure...

Full Disclosure: I have not read the entire thread.

But after the first few posts I got the gist…

My 19 y.o. son, on the other hand, is a revolver fanatic so go figure...

Same with my 16 year old; I’m 50 and prefer semi-autos.

I'm under 50, but I simply have a lot of fun with revolvers! It's amazing how much power is available. I've just started reloading .45 Colt, and had to water-test my load. It's a 250-grain SWC load -- rated at less than 900 fps -- from a Lee manual. It went through 42+ inches of water (7 jugs of water on my "board o' truth") and hit the railroad ties at the bottom of the berm. Here's the bullet:

In the same vein, here's a bevel-base .38 wadcutter after passing through 24+ inches of water (found in the fifth jug). It was fired from a snubby revolver.

Not sure that this means much, except that it allows me to compare the potential penetration of the two loads and to see how well the cast bullets hold up. I was shocked by the penetration of what I thought was a fairly "mild" .45 Colt load! Recoil was not at all heavy, and empty cases just dropped out of the cylinder with just gravity to help them.

BTW: I am aware of the fun Box O' Truth site, but he isn't shooting my loads. It was fun to do some of my own testing (and to get wet when shooting the .45 Colt: it threw water almost 20 feet).

Dirty Bob

In the water test

Do you fire from 5/6 feet away or closer to point blank range and hope you dont get wet:cuss:.....
Next time im bored I will try some diff brands of ammo and see what best
shoots out of my Ruger SP snubbie

Well, I know where you're coming from. I still like revolvers. I do have 4 center fire autos, but I carry revolvers a lot.

Remember the scene/shootout on the ship in "magnum force", the one right before the guy ran the Triumph police bike into the drink? Man, that bad guy cop must've been totin' a couple dozen speedloaders. He was spraying and praying with a M19. ROFL!

re: my water test...

IIRC, I was about 15 feet away when firing. I was surprised by how far the water sprayed. I was especially pleased with the "wimpy" .38 wadcutter load.

If you can hit your target, revolvers are a great choice. If you can't hit what you aim at, no gun will work for you.

I watched two "yoots" -- affluent kids from the suburbs, most likely -- once at a public range (spot next to mine, unfortunately). They were shooting a beautiful .40S&W Hi Power with laser sight, and missing the target completely at seven yards. Given the way they were talking, and that they were dressed like extras in a gangsta rap video, maybe that was a good thing...

Regards,
Dirty Bob

I don't even own a semi auto pistol right now.

If I did it would still be where it belongs, in the box, in the wrapper.

I've contemplated getting an auto. The capacity is nice.

Problem is every time I go looking I find cooler revolvers for the same price. That combined with the fact that I would never shoot it pretty well makes it pointless for me to purchase anything but a revolver.

I am nearer 60 years young. I have owned autoloaders but find them to be troublesume and you just never know when they will jam because of a brand of ammo. Plus in a lot of cases they are not accurate. I now own eight SA/DA revolvers either Smith or Ruger. I am more accurate with any of my revolvers than I ever was with a autoloader. My number one home defense gun is a S&W model 10 4 inch. I have speedloaders full of the LSWCHP "FBI" ammo. I do not feel under armed in anyway over someone with a autoloader. I can hit where I aim at out to 15 yrds. This is double action and rapidly. I don't have too worry about the model 10 jamming and letting me down. That could cost me my life. I will take accuracy anyday over spraying bullets all over the place or one bullet jamming.

My take from a older guy,
roaddog28

I have loved owning and shooting revolvers since the '70's, but

I sold a lot of mine off because I retired. I don't shoot as much as I thought I would, and I needed the cash for other interests. I have 5 revolvers left - 2 are Smiths, one an old Colt 1917 (my wife likes it - It's pretty much hers), and a High Standard Sentinel 9 shot .22 from around 1950 that is my favorite .22 revolver ever. The last is a .45 Colt SAA copy from Italy in stainless steel.

I mainly carry autos, but they are OLD style autos, a 1911 compact and a Walther copy-nothing high tech at all.
Nothing fancy, but everything works, which is all I want.

Lemme see.

1 colt

1 bersa

1 glock

revolvers

2 rugers

1 taurus

(the p22 pistol don't count)

I am 39, so I guess I am on the fence.

Snubby in hand beats glock35 and my 4 spare magazines in the safe.

Still, I practice with all of them.

26 with a Glock and a Ruger 22/45. GP100 on the way though. I do love a six gun just started out with the autos. I do think the movies have something to do with folks my age loving the autos. Most actions movies these days involving handguns battles are showing hi-cap autos blasting all day. Same with video games.

Clint Eastwood can take credit for my love of revolvers
Back in the 60's and 70's most t.v. shows used a revolver and auto's didn't get much airtime....
James Bond being the wild card with a Walther .32 PPK which I always thought of as wimpy pistol and should have used a 380 min
I would guess Miami Vice started the swing over to high cap auto's but some in the show
used a model 36 etc..

Im 21, and love revolvers. Never been much into modern semi's, I own a cheap Hi-Point 9mm just to have a cheap, shootable gun. I wouldnt carry it. Even though Im still a kid compared to some people on here, Ive been around 17-18 yr olds who did not know who John Wayne was. No I didnt grow up with him, but everyone should know who he is at least. I have people say I was born about 50-60 years too late (born in 1988). I listen to country (from Hank Jr. to George Strait), and wear my cowboy hat, belt and boots daily. And I love my Smith and Wesson Model 66.

I'm 26, and three quarters of my 20-some-odd guns are revolvers, and most of them are S&Ws. I'm starting to get a little bored collecting S&W revolvers, though...so maybe I'll start collecting Colt revolvers instead =)

I have always liked revolvers and at age 69 I am

Still going strong shooting them and hunting with them as well. I have 3 semi autos but many more revolvers. I like the simplicity and reliability of the revolver. At last count , I have 23 of them and want to get another Ruger Blackhawk.

I'm 28 and .38Spl is my favorite cartridge. I own 4 revolvers and 4 semi automatics, I carry a semiauto as my daily carry gun but only because its slimer, when I'm hiking or fishing I carry a colt police positive .38
