I have always preferred the 1911 as my choice hand gun. Recently I picked up a new pistol and liked it enough that I decided to carry it instead of a revolver. Went into a local gun shop, bought a paddle type holster for the 1911 that uses passive retention. I had intended to get the one that required the use of button to release but didn't read close enough. Took it back but true to form I had lost the receipt, so just decided to get the correct model, but none available. Last Friday I ordered a shoulder holster that carries the pistol in a vertical position. It came in today and after a bit of adjustment I felt comfortable with it. Later on I had to make a trip to store for milk and bread so I put the rig on. While shopping in the store I moved and for some reason the pistol slipped past the tie down strap and the gun hit the floor just behind a lady. Her words were not so lady like. Re holstered the gun and came home, while putting the groceries away same thing happened again. I am to the point now I think I am going to attach a nylon cord to the lanyard clip on pistol and hang it around the neck.
 
Get a good kydex holster designed specifically for your gun. I bet I won't be the last to say this.
 
It doesn't have to be kydex, just get a good holster.

Did your shoulder holster happen to by nylon? Just a guess.
 
Should holster Nylon YES, first and last time. The other fits great, retains with no issue just had a brain fart for the shoulder holster. After all if one drops $800-900 dollars on a 1911 why would anyone skimp on a cheap holster. Kydex is now in the GOOGLE search as I post this.

Any good holster, kydex or leather, will do the job. I use a Sparks MV2 or a Galco Miami Classic 2 shoulder holster.
 
First rule of holsters.

Get a holster made SPECIFICALLY for the particular type, size, model and barrel length of firearm you will be carrying. The way you can tell a holster is a poor choice is if it says on the package or in the description words to the effect: "Fits the following models/sizes of firearms" and follows those words with than just a SINGLE item.

The larger and heavier the gun, the more important the rule is.
 
Your abosoutly correct about getting the correct holster for your firearm from the start. The shoulder hoslter was a shot in the dark while I was waiting for local company to restock the ones I wanted But looks like the Kydex will be here before the local company will be able to restock.
 
Yeah. We all try the cheap ones. We all learn the hard way. You know what is more expensive than a good holster? Buying a cheap one and THEN buying a good one. :)

I tell my carry students to plan on at least doubling the price of the gun with magazines, holsters, training, and carry ammo.
 
You didnt state what brand shoulder rig you bought. I buy Michaels as in Uncle Mikes and I have never had a problem with fit and I use both vertical and horizontal models.
 
Good Grief!

You went to the grocery store with a new holster that let your gun fall out?
And you didn't test it out enough to even know it was a very remote possibility?

Then came home and let it fall out and hit the floor again??
Twice in the same day????

Do you have to have a ND and shoot yourself or somebody else to figure out how to buy a safe holster that fits your gun??

And safely carry it in public?????

And not know when to toss it in the trash after the first time it hit the floor???

I have used the Uncle Mikes brand in the past. I had one for my 7.5" Blackhawk. It was primarily used as a hunting rig. One day the plastc/rubber belt loop tore in two as I strapped on the rig. I tested my other Uncle Mikes holster and easily tore the belt loop in two with my fingers. Granted, they were both many years old....but still.
Over the years I have had a few handguns hit the floor. It is never a good thing. The last was a loaded cap 'n ball.

You don't need to wait until it is stocked locally- that may never happen. My local big box sporting goods store stocks 198 holsters, for four gun models. There are dozens of websites that have a holster for your gun.
 
Good lesson in now NOT to save money. Top name holsters and gunbelts are generally all worth what their makers charge for them.
 
The best horizontal carry rig for the 1911 was one that I gave to my son along with a Springfield. Still can't find out why the pistol slipped thru, pass, over, under or how ever it got past the retention strap. Already have a new one on order now.
 
Milt Sparks Summer Special. Nothing else even comes close. I tried carrying a 1911 in a Galco Miami rig and I hated it. IWB for me from now on. When you get your new shoulder rig spend some time and try as hard as you can to make the gun slip past the retention strap or make the strap pop open. If there is any doubt at all that it can - any - it will. Really try to make it fail. I have dropped a few guns in my early years and I won't take any chances on ever "dropping" one again. Ever. Really bad stuff can happen if you drop one in the wrong place.
 
That holster would certainly be going in the junk holster box or just the trash. Or maybe even return to get your money back. I have had some uncomfortable holsters over the years but only one has ever had a firearm slip out, and that was when I was hanging almost upside down.

I carry all my firearms in a White hat holster and haven't had any issue with it.
 
To me if you can't carry a handgun in the same position no matter what you are doing its a waist to time and money. Shoulder holster to me are worthless . You can move a handgun from iwb to owb and still carry in the same spot on your body and if a 5" 1911 is to big to iwb then get a smaller version of the same handgun that carries comfortably. Keep the big boy for home and range.

And we all own a box of junk to us holsters . Guys like mernickel and kirkpatrick , garrett holsters to comp-tac offer some fine choices for iwb or owb also. On thing about iwb , Some of them like the comp-tac have some of the more adjustable brands out there with the MTAC and minotaur neutral. And a few like with nelson holsters will build just what you think you want as a pure custom for a bargain price
 
I have had a couple other holsters that were basically the same brand just a different label with no issues. Yes it was more than embarrassing, the only hand gun I carry with a round ready to go is my Judge. By the grace of God I have never had a ND and I don't intend to start now. The holster was sold under name of UTG (I think that is the name) but it was repackaged the same day and on its way back to supplier. But before it went I tried every thing I could to make it drop again, and it stuck like glued in. I just don't trust something like this when you can't put your finger on exactly what cause it. If it was operator error then I would take blame/credit and read the riot act to myself. As for safety I have had people ask if I wrote safety manuals. 10 yrs in the Navy my job was in damage control and fire fighter, in 1974 two of our officers were being transferred to different ships. One Lt was being promoted to LtCdr and going on board ship as XO he tried his best to have me request duty on his ship. The second one was going to another ship, a Tin Can, and he also wanted me to go to his ship. Made me feel good but shore duty sure felt good. I have always been a stickler for safety, regardless as to what it associated with, some things you only get one mistake and then its usually not good results. And RC yes I know the difference between low cost and plain CHEAP.
 
I prefer full kydex for OWB and hybrids for IWB. I cant believe its 2014 and there are still nylon holsters out there. "Man this nylon holsters is AWESOME!" - Said no one. Ever.
 
I love the 1911 and use them for my match guns, but for carry I tote a Sig 220. This is primarily because it works with my favorite, very secure, thumb break holster - a Galco Fletch.

I prefer the 1911 but I never tried or saw a holster for it that I felt 100% comfortable with for cocked and locked carry off a range.
