I sold my gun to a gun store and now they want a photo copy of my driver's license?

i've traded a few guns at gun stores and they didn't ask me for a copy of my license. i DID buy a gun at the time of trade though so they at least saw my ID then. Ask 'em why.

Yes - this is standard procedure, and the dealer must keep record of where each firearm came from.

Name and address on a box does not provide proof of who you are , or proof of age ,and right to sell the gun.

Don't blame the gun shop. ATF can be pretty nasty when audit time comes around. ATF quite often wants to see some back-up paper work for entries made in the FFLs bound book.....either a 4473 for a gun sold or some sort of identification document for a gun purchased. Some gun stores, including the one I work for, keep the purchase documents with the seller's driver's license number on it. I would suspect that this is what the owner of your local gun store wants to do. He could call you and get you to read off your driver's license number, but is probably more comfortable getting a photocopy of the license.
Remember. He has to account for every gun he acquires and every gun he disposes of. He doesn't have any choice in the matter, so cut the guy a break and send him a photocopy of your license, and everyone will be happy.

the way the drivers license identify you is that it actually links your name, and address with an government identification number ie the dl number.... either way it just makes it easier to identify you... if you have a problem with that don't trade your guns in to a shop that has to live by atf laws....

gun stores follow the pawn broker rules for your state. It sounds like your state requires photo-ID. My state requires thumbprints, even to sell DVDs at the media store.

. and your drivers license does that, how?

Drivers license offers proof of age and identity - if your question is specificaly regarding the right to sell the firearm, it gives identification for tracking in case you didn't have the right to sell it, and indicates your not someones 12 year old selling dads guns for crack. At least the required proof via government regulations anyway.

In the case of a trade, they've got the information they need on the 4473.

Most of the time, it's to prevent confusion or misspellings when transferring information to the bound book. The ATF are real sticklers on stuff like that. Sometimes, it's easier to read the info off a driver's license than it is to read a customer's (or employee's) handwriting.

Nothing Orwellian, they're probably just concerned with keeping the books straight.

even if your state does not require it, I would personally do it strickly as a CYA measure.

In CA, they require your right thumb print as well. Which is also required for your DL.

Once I complete a transaction it is complete. If they call me up or send me an e-mail or letter that more needs to be done, I'm done doing business with that company.

They are just trying to cover their own butts for ATF or some other regulatory agency, but that does not make it my problem.

Do what you like, but I would never darken their door again.

The thing is, from a dealer perspective, the transaction is not complete. He needs to log the gun into his bound book. The return address on the package is not necessarily your address.
