I have a SP101 with a 4.2" barrel in 327 magnum. I bought it brand-new and have always been kind of disappointed in it. The DA trigger is stiff and it never fits my hand very well, even with various different kinds of grips. I can shoot it okay SA, but it always feels kind of awkward.
I really wanted to like SP101's. I'm definitely a revolver guy, and kind of a Ruger guy, too. I got a used 2.5" 357 model that was sold to me on Gunbroker as "NOS". It wasn't; it was just used. It also had a terrible DA trigger and, again, I couldn't find comfortable grips for it. I couldn't hit the side of a barn with it and traded it towards something else.
Recently my LGS had a used 2.5" SP101 in 9mm. Its trigger felt pretty good, and I went ahead and made a trade for it. Third time's the charm, right?
I had put Hogue Monogrips on my first SP101 and they didn't seem to help that much. I gave them to a friend. Maybe I got a different model of Monogrips this time? Anyway, I ordered a set and they fit the 9mm SP101 nicely.
I took it shooting today and shot a box of cheap range ammo through it. It had no malfunctions and I shot it about as accurately as any other snubby revolver. I shot it about as well in DA as I did in SA, which for me is usually a good sign. I wondered if the 9mm would feel snappier than 38 special in a smallish snubby, but it didn't. The recoil was moderate and not at all distracting.
The empties practically fall out of my S&W 625, but I had to push them out of the Ruger with a small screwdriver. Luckily I'd also ordered some moon clips and brought them with me, and they worked just fine. They were so easy to load and unload that it didn't slow my shooting down very much.
My original purpose in buying it was range toy and a medium-caliber snubby to practice with more cheaply than 38 special. If it continues to be reliable, I wouldn't turn up my nose at it for SD, either. It could be a nice little nightstand gun, or I would be willing to CC it if I put a DAO hammer on it.
If you have a favorite SP101 holster, please let me know. Or if there is a particular 9mm load that revolvers seem to like a lot.
I'm glad that I finally found an SP101 that I like.
