ID for ammo sales at J&G?

A strange thing happened to me last weekend at J&G Sales in Prescott. They asked me for ID when I purchased ammunition there last week, and recorded my information.THey claimed it gave them deniability should someone sue them for selling ammo to a minor/illegal immigrant terrorist, etc. This is the first time that anyone has ever asked for ID when buying ammunition and frankly I didn't like it. I was dressed pretty normally, and since I am clearly (way) over 18 and had my infant daughter with me, I hardly think I qualify as appearing too young or like I might go on a three-state shooting spree.

Has this happened to anyone else?

Yes, but that's the law in California. In fact, we also need to give a thumb print when we buy any ammunition.

I think that may be a city/county thing where you are. There's no requirement for ID (other than being over 18 for handgun ammo) or thumbprint here in North Kali.

That sounds like it's verging on being illegally invasive. I’d question the store whether it’s a law (and then ask them to site the code section) or just a CYA thing the store is doing.

Must be a local thing or a retail choice? I "only" have to show my ID when I buy. Thumbprint is only for gun buys (near me).

Of the thousands and thousands of rounds of ammo I've bought I have yet to show ID in person other than the occasional person out of state that wants a driver's license copy for mail order ammo. Many don't ask for it though.

I have never had to show my ID for ammunition or ammunition components in the Los Angeles, Culver City or Hawthorne area, or at least not since the law was changed many years ago.

Don't interpret my comments to suggest that this is a shooter's paradise...

Arizona is slipping. I would have requested they quote the law requiring this information. If he couldn't provide it I would have refused to give it. If they didn't sell me the ammo, I would have gone elsewhere.
Here in the Socialist State of Illinois it's required by law that we show our FOID card to buy ammo. No body has ever kept the info but they all have to see the card.

They did not say that there is a law with regard to amo purchases, rather that they are keeping a record of ammo sales. If they are sued, the can prove that they made sure the buyer was over 21. I think I will probably not buy any more ammo at J&G until that policy changes.

That is their POLICY, nothing more.

It's b.s., pure and simple. However, I've done and will probably do so again on those occasions when I get up to Prescott. I'm told that they sell your info to telemarketers, among other things. Oh, and of course you will make it on their own mailing list.

Ahh, you're right. It's not law in all of California, just here in Los Angeles city (unincorporated). I remember now that I didn't have to do that at a range in Burbank (it's own incorporated city but still inside LA County).

Oh well, I roll my own mostly anyway.

NOTE: The following is what was told to me by a pretty reliable source....

J & G used to be located in Tempe. They were a MUCH smaller operation then. Supposedly, the owner's son got into some deep do-do legally. I think it had to do with firearms violations. So the son plea bargained and the ownership agreed to work with the ATF.

Now here is where it may sound a little far fetched, but once again, this is coming from a source that isn't known for BS or an agenda...

J&G then relocated to Prescott for some reason or another. As part of the plea bargain, they try to get as much info about their customers as possible, and give all that info to the ATF. They even leave their computers on and accessible at night, for the ATF to easily access their database.


Now this is what I can say from experience:

They have asked me for my Drivers License EVERY time I have purchased ANYTHING from them. They make a photocopy of your drivers license. On subsequent transactions, they ask for your ID or for your name. If you pop up on their computer screen, they won't ask you for your ID to copy again. They even asked me for my ID when I bought a chronograph . Even after you are ready to pay for your item, for some reason you end up waiting at least 15-20 minutes for them to cash you out.
The funny thing is, if you buy ammo from them at a gunshow they are at, they don't ask you for anything but your money. And ammo is all they usually bring to a gunshow, except for a few (and I mean a few) optics.
A former employee that now works for another gunshop in Prescott told VicLouis and me that as far as he knows, they card you so they can sell your name and info to various (probably sporting) marketers.


Draw your own conclusions. I don't know what to think, but I don't like it....

Federal law actually is that you must be over 21 to purchase handgun caliber ammo from an FFL licensed dealer. Doesn't matter if the ammo is for a rifle or not (i.e. a kel-tec sub2000 chambered in 9mm), so long as it is a handgun caliber you can't buy it until you're 21. Makes it a real PITA if you have a pistol and are not 21 .

Mylhouse, J&G has always been in Prescott, they opened a store in Tempe around 1995-6 at Price and Baseline. When construction on the Loop 101 reached Baseline, that intersection was a nightmare for all the businesses in that area. Their Tempe store closed because of the lack of business, as did a number of others in that area.

Blades67 is correct,J&G started in prescott and opened a second store in tempe which did notlast very long.I've seen more than one older customer leave ammo on the counter and walk out when asked for ID.

I too would take my business elsewhere.

But if they are just selling your name (as was mentioned above)to other advertisers/retailers how much on average junk-mail do you get compared to what I would consider normal. Say about 2 or three gun or sporting type catalogs or fliers/ads a week.

Personally I think something fishy is going on.

I was think about making a trip up to J&G. I have seen there adds in Shot Gun News and thay had some good prices. But if there pulling this BS , FORGET IT:banghead:

I stand corrected on the moving to Prescott part. That was an assumption on my part, because I only knew of the Tempe store until it closed. Then I started reading the Shotgun News around that time (must have been really early 90s) and found out about them in Prescott.

All the stuff about the son getting busted and now being a pimp for the JBTs is what I was told.
