Nice photo. I'd like to see the whole shotgun, though. Looks interesting.

The two-tone from the period heat treating on the WWII is a nice element of the close-up, though. Both look like guns you should be proud to own.

Been working on inheriting a 1897 myself. Save me from having to buy one.

In WWI there were some guns specially designed for 'trench sweeping' . One was the Thompson SMG , another was the Browning Auto Rifle . Even the '03 Mk I had that purpose [if you ever heard of it !! ].
 
It's important to note that while the Thompson was designed as a "Trench Broom," it wasn't finished until after the first world war. It first appeared in the 1920's.
 
I recall a recent article in -either A.R. or G&A- magazine that talked about trench guns in WWI. Great article. The OPs photo was reminiscent of the era.
