If there's no legal open carry in TX, why the "BBQ gun?"

Simple question, as stated above.

I know there's a minor tradtion of the "BBQ gun", essentialy a fancy, often engraved carry piece for a party with like-minded individuals.

What I don't know is how many Texans or westerners who have pistols they consider thier "BBQ gun" and have actualy attended a BBQ where carry was welcome.

Is open carry legal on private property when not hunting? (Presumably TX has a hunting exception to the no-open carry laws, or it'd be unworkable....)
 
The BBQ thing is a bit of a joke but based on reality. Here's the way I understand the story.

When ranchers and land owners held big shindigs everyone wore their best. Like wearing a nice suit to church on Sunday. For the men folk, that also ment wearing your nicest hogleg. It's no different than a big fancy belt buckle.
Private property is just that. We don't need open carry "laws" on our own land.
I'm sure it's still practiced today, somewhere although I have not been invited to such an event. I am however, very prepared. :D

I could be wrong, but I was always under the impression that a BBQ gun had to evolve. In other words, it is a more civilized form of “pimping” out a weapon. You start with a nice respectable high end Revolver or 1911 and have scroll and inlay work done. Then custom inlayed grips. Then maybe a custom inscriptions. Coins in the grip are always nice. You will then need some nice leather to show it off. I may be wrong on this.

So not only is it and excuse to get a new piece, but it’s and excuse to have it personalized for your enjoyment.

You get maximum “The Eyes of Texas Are Upon You” points if the scroll work on your buckles and bolo matches the pattern on the gun.

Waiting on an invite to a BBQ so I can wear a nice gun, be around gun people and have fun. :banghead:
 
On private property open carry is legal with owner's permission. That stated, it is best to open carry where strangers can't object (privacy fenced backyard, friendly neighbors on both sides or property where others are to far off to object). But, this does give me an idea for my next BBQ. :evil:
 
I have never heard of a BBQ gun, but I guess I was never around ranchers (farmer types mostly). Sounds like a decent tradition though.
 
Does that come with .45 ACP BBQ sauce?

Ok, I grew up in West Texas with guns and currently live in the Texas Hill Country...and I've never heard the term "BBQ Gun" before. I know lotsa folks with purty guns and I[ve been to half-a-million BBQs, but "BBQ Gun" is a new one on me. Does that make me a Drugstore Cowboy? :D

I never heard of a BBQ Gun but I told my friends that when I auger my plane in I want them to have a BBQ and devide up my guns.

Now I'll tell them of the BBQ Gun tradition and that I expect them to be suitably attired in their best guns.:)

in texas, you can open carry anything long gun, you can ccw a handgun. some stores and neighborhoods, and cities, actually have " welcome gunowners, open carry here" type signs and regs.

The top one is a Smith & Wesson 1911 Special edition .45, it was a limited run of 250 guns. It was distributed by Lew Horton's. I changed the grips out and put on the engraved Aluma grips that are in the picture.

The bottom one is a Taurus PT940 in .40 cal. with pearl grips and acented in gold, a true pimp gun.

Both guns are nice shooters but the Taurus is in the shop now for the second time for the same problem. The mag release keeps stripping the threads and coming apart. I hope they fix it this time I really like that little gun.

East Texas County Judges seemed to all carry more or less fancy, upscale handguns openly. It could have been a hurricane related thing, but my impression was that they were always like that.
Unconfirmed stories I heard through the grapevine had it that some of them would lay a hand on their handgun to emphasise conversational points, for example; "Git your a** up to Pebble Creek and start handing out ham sandwiches, or so help me..."

No wonder some folks against me have no Social Skills. :D

They can't be owning a BBQ gun, and you can forget getting a new pair of leather shoes for a special event. :p

Texas ain't the only state where you can BBQ.

It's a BBQ gun, not a Texas BBQ gun.

PS ever been to a THR BBQ?

You'll see more guns than a "Matrix" shootout.
