If you could go back in time and advise yourself

I was thinking about posting just such a question about three days ago... :p

I'd probably suggest to myself to skip most of the cheap stuff I've had. For rifles, get one nice bolt action rimfire rifle, one nice lighter caliber (.243, .25-06) and get one nice heavier caliber rifle (probably a 30-06) and put decent glass on them. For handguns, get one nice 22 target pistol or revolver (Dan Wesson or Smith 617), one very nice 1911 (take your pick), and one nice smaller carry gun (???).

I went through a long period of buying something because I had some money burning a hole in my pocket instead of waiting to get what I actually wanted. Or buying what was in the store instead of sticking to what I really wanted to get. For well less than the total that I've spent, I could have six completely custom built guns built specifically for me, exactly how I wanted them.

Once you find something that is reliable and is a good fit for you, stick with it, whether it's a firearm, friend, spouse, etc.

Gun magazines are not the best source of information on guns. People who use them on a daily basis are.

If you lose faith in a gun, get rid of it.

Don't be an early adopter when it comes to firearms unless you are willing to be one of the first to know the bad things the factory (and gunwriters) may not even know.

Don't be an early adopter of new cartridges unless you don't mind being stuck with a collectable that's expensive to shoot.

Quality is better than quantity. If you're wealthy, this doesn't matter.

Quality does not necessarily mean the most expensive.

If you buy something to carry, but you're afraid to carry it because it's too expensive, get over it or get rid of it.

If you use a gun, it's going to get scratched and worn. Get over it early, and you won't have to waste much time worrying about it.

Know your limitations when it comes to how much firearm you can handle.

Don't second guess yourself about the past.

Don't waste your money on those gun mags. Buy ammo and training instead.

Never, ever, for any reason sell a German Sigp226 preban. No matter how good a deal it is.:banghead:
