If you gotta own one .22lr revolver...

I cannot even come close to imagining having to own just ONE... But I suppose if I had to shrink it down to that I have yet to own or even shoot a 22lr wheelie that gives mt the accuracy, fun, and pride of ownership as does my S&W 617.

I've had a 4 inch 617 ten shot for a couple of years now, and next to my model 18 that I bought in 1972, it's been the best all around .22 revolver I've ever had.

J or K frame, you can't go wrong

With a scope?!?!? HERETIC!

Hey Markbo,
I know, but astigmatism and nearsightedness now make scopes mandatory.
My other revolvers will wear red dots soon.:(

My one and only .22 LR revolver is a Smith Wesson 17-3.

Big grin here.

Whatever trips his trigger. Nice gun... sweet. Great pictures here!

No Scope Catherine

Eyes and scopes.

I CAN relate to the eye problems though. I am very near sighted and have worn glasses since I was 5 years old. I wear bi-focals now... old age you know! Grin.

I keep thinking that when I turn 58 years old VERY soon... there will be some miracle. The far sightedness that comes with middle age will catch up with the near sightedness so if I do decide to wear mascara again... my nose will not have to touch or be an inch from the MIRROR! SEE the lines well in the swimming pool far away! No blur. Not feel for your eyeglasses when you get up in the morning.

My late husband had a scope that he used on and off the S&W Model 41 though. I did not use it except for one time even though he adjusted it for me. That was his one and only scope... just to try it for the heck of it. He wore eyeglasses but his Rx was NOT strong. He could actually function and even read/drive if he had to without glasses!

My lever action rifles have no scopes. My Marlin Papoose has no scope. None of my hand guns have scopes except for my late husband's Model 41 which is OFF the gun now.

I did shoot some rifles with scopes... I think that you have to get used to it even after it is adjusted. Some were ok and some just drove me NUTS! Short drive though! Grin.

It is like some guys can shoot bench rest, prone, this and that. I like to shoot standing UP. Bench rest... not my speed. Prone on the ground like with war games... ouch. Sitting down on the ground... nope. I could do it but I just do NOT like it.

A buddy wants me to try to shoot with a scope more because I did try it a couple of times when my bad arm was NOT acting up with his rifle and I did ok - not great but ok even though it was at a longer RANGE!

My husband/groom has scopes on some of his rifles. Hunting rifles... he only needs eyeglasses now for reading anyway. GREAT eyes.

I think that whatever works for YOU meaning anyone is GREAT if you can practice self defense, hunt if you wish, plink, compete, etc.

Catherine - Up close and personal self defense shooting and 50 yards/150 feet to the gongs lady! Ding, ding, ding and sometimes a few more dings!

I want a new 617 4". My new 627 Pro was $127 more, MSRP, and weighs but 2.3 oz more. It seems like a lot of gun, both cost and mass-wise, for a .22. I am not so fond of the full lug, either. Enter this year a 5" 8-shot 63 with a partial lug. Of course, I could buy a 5" .357 60 for $32 more, MSRP, and it'd weigh a bit less, with it's larger ID holes. I guess I really can't rationalize the expense.

I did try to like a beautiful closeout priced 50th Anniversary Single Six my bride shocked me with. Sadly, it was the furthest 'off the mark' at 12-15yd, with either cylinder, of any fixed sight revolver I have ever shot. Fortunately, someone with more tolerance (and money) wanted it. It was pretty... except for the gold writing.

So - my only .22 handgun is a MKII - which also happens to be my only rude case tosser. It's home is steady - it's a lot of fun, scoped or with fo iron sights.

I love the model 17, maybe I am lucky some day, to find a nice one, if I look hard enough.

In the meantime, I am coming to believe that I could get very friendly with a new 617 4" bbl as well ... considering 5 oz less weight compared to the 6" bbl.

So I have fired:

S&W 17 .22 6" Barrel
S&W 617 .22 6" Barrel
Ruger Single Six .22 6.5" Barrel
Colt Diamondback .22 4" Barrel

Liked them all... Loved the 17 and the 617

The Colt trigger was better than I expected.

So I have been looking at used Smiths and Colts...

They are pretty much withing $100 of a new gun.

Need to make a decision soon.

Thanks again everyone for your advice!

Has anyone bought a used S&W model 17 lately?

If so would you mind telling me what you paid for it?

Not sure what I should be spending on one.
