If you had $13-1400 for an AR-15...

Lmt Lower and a Larue 16inch stealth upper puts you at just about 1400 or a lil over. If price was no object 14.5in Noveske N4. Save some more cash get a Noveske.

Most important question, do you reload? If so, go with a 6.8 SPC.

I've built plenty of AR's, and bought plenty more pre-built. Honestly about the only parts that matter are the barrel, bolt, and trigger. Other that that they're pretty much all the same. I guess you could say the stock and forearm choices too, but that's personal preference.

There, i fixed it for ya. ;) Really though, the 6.8 it is hard to find stuff for any way you cut it, and is not as good a cartridge as the 6.5. (less energy, less bullet selection, and less long range performance [actually, less performance anywhere past the muzzle])

+1 on the Colt. They should be available in your price range. Here is an ad from CDNN:

Bayo Lug · Upper and Quad Rail are 1-Piece · Flip Sights · New
#COL6940 $1699.99

Colt 6920 M4A3 AR-15 · 223 · 16" M4 Barrel w/Bird Cage · 2-20rd Mags · LE

Another thing to consider is a Sig 556 which is comparable IMHO to a piston AR and the prices on those have come down. I just bought a Standard model for $1299.00. They take AR mags etc.

Have fun with your new purchase and welcome to the High Road! whoops (got confused with another thread!

Appreciate all the input. My serious consideration has been a Colt 6920, which I can get for the price range I posted, but when I asked about it, so many people said you can do so much better for the money, which is why I asked the current question.

I haven't seen too many suggestions of rifles better than a 6920 in that price range so maybe people were just hatin' on Colts. I'm not new to AR's, but I'm not familiar with the higher end models.

Frank, maybe I should be welcoming you. ;)

Well for $1440 not including shipping or taxes you can get an LMT monolithic rail platform gas piston upper half. For around $685 you can get an LMT defender upper half. I dont remember the prices for a complete rifle.
An M&P 15 MOE model in a local shop is $1077 complete, the least expensive model they have now. The others (stag, colt, other S&W's) are from $1300-$1600.
A Bushmaster gas piston rifle is $1850.
Hmmm, for $1400 I could pay for my upper half that is showing up, and have a bit left over.

They are $1299 at the shows here pretty consistently. Every now and then You can find one from a dealer for a little less.

Wow, those are great prices. Last time I was at a show they were 1800-2000, but that was 6-8 weeks ago. The best price I've seen online was 1350 + shipping.

Prices have started to come back down. For that you can almost get a 6920 again.
I suggest an LMT Defender or S&W of some flavor.

I have a Colt pre-ban 1978 lower with a newer Colt HBAR upper.
Very accurate...wouldn't want any other AR. If I had to replace it, it would still be a Colt.

I spend the money on components to build a time machine so that I could go back and buy an AR-15 for what they are worth.

to tell you the truth I'm not quite sure what $1400 buys in an AR anymore as prices are so all over the place.

With that budget I'd get a LMT Defender with SOPMOD stock. In fact, I'm placing an order for one in a week or so.

Just get the Colt 6920 if you can find one in your price range.

The LMT and Noveske guns are every bit as good as the Colt, but I don't know that they are *better*.

If you get the Colt you have the advantage of getting a complete rifle that you know is good and you don't need to source the upper and lower separately, etc.

The Colt will also hold it's resale value very well if you decide you don't like the AR platform after all.

Trebor,
I already have a Stag. I am not new to the platform, just looking for an upgrade.

There is no place to get a complete LMT?
