If you had only one shot to defend yourself and had to choose between these calibers, what would you pick? Why? The load can be any factory load that you can buy, no crazy handloads with twice the recomended powder!

I would take the .357 Mag because of the speed and in a JHP, I trust that it will expand.

It took me a second to list the poll. From one man who wants to kill you. Probably a torso shot.

.45ACP preferably with a Golden Sabre or GD. Even if it doesn't expand it's still almost a half inch hole. Plus I'm fairly accurate with that round.

I would take any revolver caliber .38+P and up or any auto caliber 9mm and up (though I am assuming good premium JHP ammo). Of course, if I only had one round then follow up shots won't matter much so the more powerful the better. I'd probably pick .45ACP, .44spl or .45LC (no .40S&W, .357mag or .44mag if I only had one round because I'd want to be especially sure it did not overpenatrate since there would be no follow up shots- I wouldn't want a pencil type wound all the way through, I'd want the hollowpoints to expand and the round to expend itself in my attacker).

Tough choice, I went with the .45, because thats what I am used to. The .357 is in a very close second place though.

Thats a pretty tough question. With only one shot I voted .45acp but a 158 gr. .357 would most likely do just as well. I would not want to be hit with either one of the choices. As a kid I caught a load bird shot while looking for a moon shine making operation that was in my extended neighborhood; mountainous section of E. Tennessee. I definitely did not go back. LOL :neener:

I chose the .45 ACP because that's what I carry most of the time. the .357 is just about as good. The only two I would consider iffy would be the .380 and 9MM Mak but there's no such thing a sure stopping with any handgun.

Ok. I get a choice? Then I guess they must be lined up on a table with one round in each? In that case, the first one I can pick up.

Then the next one, and the next one, and so on......

.45acp first choice
.357 mag second choice.

But I often carry the .357 in the summer because it is easier to carry in gymshorts in the Smartcarry.

Of the choices, .45 with Golden Sabres or Gold Dots in my DW Patriot or Smith 1911.

The 230-Gr Golden Sabre launched from my "GI-45" Springfield.

My only .357 is a short-barrel Sheriff's Model Vaquero. Great "Fun Gun" but shoots to the left in my hands.

A long time ago in BCT, our DI held a demonstration. He hung up a large piece of steel plate and picked up an M16 and shot it. It didn't move but there was a hole in it. He next tried an M-14. It moved a little and there was a slightly bigger hole in it. Next he used a M1911 .45 ACP at the shot the heavy plate swung completely around and fell. There was no hole in it but a very large dent. Knock the snot out of them - they can die on the ground later. I go for the big hole.
