Consider if you were a private contractor, an active duty/reserves soldier in our armed forces, or just a regular Guy/girl who just loves firearms and had to chose one rifle and one handgun to go into the streets of Baghdad, A-Stan, Beirut, wherever and had to defend your self or family in a Armed conflict, desperate type of scenario, what firearms would you chose, it could be firearms you presently own which would add a sense of realism to my post, or weapons you always wanted and tell us why you would pick that handgun and rifle. Strictly hypothetical tell me what your opinions are?

M4 or AK47 would work for me for the rifle.

Any 15rd 9mm such as a Glock would do for the sidearm.

(I can't believe I said Glock)!

HKG3 for the long gun.

S&W Model 686 w/6" barrel for the handgun.

Mossberg 500 for the shotgun.

I know I'm unoriginal for it, but M-4 and 92fs. At this point in my life I still don't have enough experience with my "dream guns" to pick them over the weapons I've been issued and worked to become proficient with.

I would go with what I own and know hit hard and accurately with absolute reliability, my Vepr-K 7.62x39 and Service Springfield XD40.

1911 or xd.45 as the sidearm

m-4 if urban, otherwise an m-16 or m-14 depending on distances

It would depend on the setting, but if I had the room to maneuver it around I'd be armed with the FN FAL in .308 for my rifle.

My handgun would be something effective, something like the Springfield XD or S&W M&P in .45 ACP.

The sidefolding AK that's being built for me. My XD9 or an XD45, my Ruger SP101 in my pocket or on my ankle. And if I didn't have the AK yet, my 870 loaded with buck or slugs.

I"d have to say a Ak or a galil and a 1911 platform pistola,
I do however favor a shotgun, served me well many years ago.
But i'll take what ever my hands can get on at the time and collect as I go.

From weapons that I own, it would be my LMT AR and my P6. I am proficient with both, and they have been 100% reliable so far, no jams or stoppages. My LMT is accurate to boot.

They are not the same thing.

You lump them altogether like they fill the same roles.

The ideal firearms for armed conflict localy, at home or near a vehicle is probably a nice rifle in a large powerful caliber with .308 being the minimum for an all-out warfare scenario. Up to and beyond a .50 BMG M2 (don't put innocents in danger with your fire). Maybe you need a 20mm mounted Vulcan with armor piercing rounds to deal with lightly armored approaching APCs?

If you are a soldier on foot for miles, usualy without incident but with the occasional massive gun battle then you want a smaller caliber that you can carry more of for longer distances and use in extended firefights away from an ammo source. Something like most ARs and AKs are chambered in.

A handgun is also highly variable. Are you defending against those in body armor, soldiers, etc Or general desperate looters? Is it a secondary firearm to back up your rifle, or will you often be in positions you cannot have a visible rifle and it needs to be a main combat arm?

There is many factors and there is not perfect caliber or firearm for all of them.

Glock 21SF with a suppressor, lasermax, and a Surefire X300 and an AK with 30 rd mags, tri rail (with light and laser), and a better stock and pistol grip. Dont get me wrong, nothing impractical will be attached to either.

The handgun would be a Glock.

For the rifle, I would be torn between a .223 self-loader or a .308 loaded with match quality ammunition. If I knew trouble would be a close in urban setting, the .223 would be my choice. For longer shots, I would prefer the .308
