I've been considering buying a Browing Hi-Power for awhile. The Practicle model feels very good in my hand.

Today my local gunstore got a Beretta CX4 on display. I also liked the feel of the gun and I have a thing for pistol caliber carbines.

If you had to choose one, I can only afford one right now, which would you choose? Both are around the same price. Both would be used mostly as a range gun and maybe for self defense.

I you were to choose the Hi-Power, would you choose the 9MM or the .40?

Thanks

Chris Nemeth

well....they're not really the same type of gun...

most indoor ranges won't allow 'rifles' to be fired, including pistol caliber carbines. I got in a mild argument once that if a .50AE Desert Eagle is allowed, my .44 mag marlin 1894 should be too. But, if they allow one type of rifle, then they have to allow more, or be seen as favorism etc.

But I digress.

Can't really toss a vote either way here. Guns are too different to give a yea/nea vote to...

If you really are having a toss-up on it I'd go with the better 'deal'. Right now the CX4 are in short supply, in theory the prices should come down and availablitly of used guns go up. Where as the Hi-Power has been out for years finding a good deal shouldn't be nearly as difficult.

Just a thought.

I'll sway (easily!) toward the BHP ...... wonderful gun .... plenty around, tho often at a price.

Good investment tho IMO .... and proficiency with that piece will serve you well ..... particularly if going ''up'' to the 1911 camp.

I have to say, Cx4. I already have a 9mm pistol, would prefer a Beretta to a Hi-Power if I get a 40, and could use the same ammo in a rifle, plus there are 20 and 30 round mags out for the Beretta (it does use 92 and 96 mags, depending on the model right? Otherwise, I guess there aren't hi-caps). But that's me.

Hi Powers are great pistols: reliable, accurate, handy, proven, etc......
Either 9mm or .40, both rounds & pistols work well. If I had standard & the real hi cap 9mm mags, I'd lean toward the 9mm. If I only had ten round mags, definitely the .40......

I have neither, but know I don't want a CX4, ever, and do want a BHP, ASAP. I guess I just like classics.

Browning High Power. Aside from the fact that it's a proven reliable classic, prices on BHPs will only go up. Concur with Jack19, and go order a bunch of the 15 or 17 round milsurp mags from CDNN for under $20 each. I have two of the 17 round mags and they work great.

The CX-4 is certainly a neat gun, but due to high demand prices are somewhat inflated now. I'd wait until the price tag comes down a bit.

I'd go for the Hi-Power. Pistol-caliber carbines just don't really appeal to me.

I like pistol caliber carbines.
They work for me.
However, handguns and pistol caliber carbines had slightly different purposes.

If going into combat, I would want the carbine.
A pistol serves in several more capacities than does a carbine:
1) concealed carry;
2) convenient carry (always on one's person and not leaning up against a tree); and,
3) pistols travel and store more easily.

If a person already has a suitable handgun, he should augment it with a carbine.
If a person has neither a carbine nor a handgun, he should start with a handgun, and what a start the Hi-Power would make. :)

CX4

because I already have a Hi-power. :) Besides, might as well get a gun for those Beretta mags I have.
