I Have Used It With No Qualms

I lost my drivers license last year (replaced shortly thereafter) and used my CHL as ID since it has my Texas DL # / Photo / Address, Signature And Physical Description.

I tried to use my photo-bedecked state issued concealed carry permit when getting a post office box, as two forms of ID were required, and I had only my DL besides... no luck. The US PO doesn't accept a carry permit -- even with photo -- as valid ID.

If I didn't have my DL my CHL would be worthless here in NC. Law says you have to carry both. As it is they are both in one of those pull out flaps in my wallet. That way they are always together. My lifetime hunting license stays behind the CHL too. NC Game laws say it's useless without a photo ID. I guess my point is I make a point to make sure I have all three at all times :)

Sure. But I should lose both together, since they're in the same wallet. Usually opt for the DL, since it's on the outside pocket of my mall-ninja-esqe wallet.

One Saturday morning I went to Home Depot once to get something and they had one of those "get a free toolbox with a Home Depot card application" promos. Turned out I didn't have my wallet on me (doh!) but I did have my other little ID wallet that is used just for my CWP and some emergency #s (incl lawyers). I tried to use the CWP as a form of ID since it is a state-issued photo ID, but they wouldn't take it (the girl at the table got all wierded out about it too). Had to go home and get my wallet since that also meant I not only didn't have my driver's license but I also had no $ to get what I originally came there for!

I once used my Florida issued "Concealed Weapon or Firearm License" as ID to vote in a local election. I had no problem in my Santa Rosa county precinct. I imagine it is up to the clerk. The card proved my identity with the name on the voting roles. I normally would not use it at a bank or airport since it might make them think that I have a gun.

I have no problems whatsoever using my CCW permit in such a case. I wouldn't make a big showing of it flashing it around though. There is always the slim chance of being followed home and robbed by a snooping criminal that sees it, which does occasionally happen but IMHO is far too rare of an incident to worry about.

But, I just love the tin foil hat folks that don't want anyone to even know they have a CCW permit out of tear they will have their doors kicked in by the Jack Booted Thugs.

In fact, I know a VERY pro-gun guy that won't even get a CCW permit because he is convinced it becomes public info that can be used against him. For example, he envisions himself being shot dead during a routine traffic stop after exiting his vehicle because the dispatchers tells the officers there he has a concealed weapon permit. :uhoh:

One time at a local emergency preparedness store they asked for photo ID when I gave them my credit card. I reached into my wallet to pull out my drivers license and accidently grabbed the concealed carry license (the color markings are similar). I didn't even realize that I'd handed her the wrong card until after she used it to complete the transaction.

It wasn't a problem at all. She didn't recognize what it was for, but saw that it said, "Utah Department of Public Safety," right at the top and decided that it was good enough for her.

I needed two forms of photo ID to get a library card, and all I had was my CCW as my second form of id. I cringed, but I handed it over and they accepted it. It was actually a little funny, considering all the books I was trying to check out were gun related.

I actually have a friend who wants to get a CCW for the sole and explicit purpose of using it as his ID.

Go figure.

I've done it when asked for a second form of ID. Usually get the question and answer bit about "Can I get one too?"

As for the secrecy issues, I really don't care if people know that I carry or not. I cover the gun because the law says I have to.

I used my Illinois FOID card once to try and buy a beer in another state and had the police called on me because the waiter and the manager both thought it was bogus.

The Police said that my name and DOB checked out but the restaurant had no obligation to return my ID to me. Cop mentioned he'd never heard of needing a permit to own a gun.

It took over an hour of wrangling with the manager before she would even give me my ID back.

Also, one time out with my entire family I used it in an Illinois restaurant and the waiter wouldn't accept it while making the comment, "You aren't carrying a firearm now, are you?" He'd never seen one before, either.

I don't know what FOIDs look like now, but the one I had looks like a fifth grader had a go at making it with a pair of round-tip scissors and a manual typewriter.

All other times I've been asked for ID (like when buying ammo at Wal-Mart) I've been open carrying, so the whole "rifle or handgun?" question is a bit unnecessary.

I recently ordered a very expensive item from a NYC-based store (they have a brick-and-mortar shop in addition to their online site).

There were some billing issues, complicated in part because my current residence (which is relatively recent) is not the same as my billing address. They were unable to confirm some information with my bank, so they asked if I could fax in a scan of government-issued ID for verification.

I sent them a scan of my employee ID, my driver's licence (which has my current residence) and my CCDW permit (which, at the time, had my previous residence listed which was the billing address).

The next thing I heard was that the order was shipping out that day.

Why not. It's valid ID in CT.. I am not afraid to let people see I may have a gun.. Of course I would use discretion if there is anyone in line behind me or too many people working at a counter or some similar situation.
