If you were called to military duty, and they let you take your own handgun, what would you take?

Would it be something you already have?

Would you go out and buy something new?

Or would you be willing to stick with the Beretta M9?

I think I would go with a Glock 21 (which I dont even own right now), assuming I could get hi cap mags for it, and break it in before going.

Otherwise, I guess I would stick with a 1911.

I would take my Wilson Protector 1911A1 with plenty of #47D magazines. So far, it has been performing flawlessly and accurately.

For the sake of commonality of parts and magazines, I would stick with the M9. Of course, I'd prefer to leave the handgun at home and carry a few extra magazines for my rifle instead. If required to have a sidearm, though, I'd go with the M9.

Ever the logistician, it'd have to be a 9mm or else you better bring a whole bunch of your own ammo. :p

I like the Beretta design just as much as most newer designs but I guess all else considered, I'd just as soon as a Glock 17.... or an 18. ;)

I'd want my trusty BHP 9mm due to availability of ammo and reliability of design. Beretta M9 if I melted down my BHP.:D

Golgo-13 has the right idea, at least from an infantry standpoint. Either keep with the standard issue M9 or carry some more ammo for your rifle. In fact, it might be preferable to carry a couple extra belts for the machine gunners. Hell, in the desert, in MOPP gear, I'd rather carry an extra canteen than a pistol.

I've known many, many combat veterans, and of those, only one used a pistol in a firefight, and he was a helicopter pilot. Conversely, I've never heard of anyone complaining about having too much ammo for their rifle once the shooting started.

The fact of the matter is that if you have to go to your pistol, things are so totally f-ed that it doesn't much matter at that point.

If you happened to be in a support role, the M9 would still be the best choice for a pistol. Remember, from a military standpoint, the best weapon is something for which there is a reliable supply and maintenance channel.

A well armed woman! To watch your back and rubb it after a hard day of shooting third wolrders :D Possible two of them. Cloned from Nicole Kidman ;) Yea thats the ticked. And maybe my Colt Combat Commander. I'll pick up a AK somewhere along the way.

What I'd take?

Lots of protein bars, soap, deodorant, a few rolls of toilet paper. I'd maybe want a scope I could mount on the typical M-16/M-4 variant.

Otherwise, the Army has better gear than I do, excepting the "accurate" rifles..

I like the way my Beretta is set up, but I'll take as many 15 rounders as I can :D

(I'll bring some of those rubber basepads too ;) )

Alright. I'll be the first to say it.

EXTRA UNDERWEAR!!! :what:

Oh, you asked about handguns. As was mentioned, it's a last ditch device, so oodles of ammo is not a consideration. My 1911, and a case of ammo. Certainly far more than I am likely to need.

Might try to sneak a good bolt .308 on board, too. Never know when you might want to really reach out and touch someone. And a good knife. And one to keep well hidden. Try to, anyway. Captures do happen.

'Course, the military frowns on bringing your own stuff. Least they did when I was in. But when you're mech infantry, you have more options for stashing stuff than, say, airborne.

Let's just say I usually lived good in the field.

Lunch? C-rats? Time for a Snak Pak! Oh, and those roll up sportsman's hammock beat sleeping on the ground. :D

I still remember getting chewed out for a lime green down jacket I wore on some ops at night. Hey, it was cold, alright? It was fine and tactical when the moon was behind deep clouds (it was a BLACK night!), but that bugger had to poke its nose out. :what:

  • Sergeant Eldridge: "YOU! Where'd you get that jacket!?!?"
  • PFC: "I bought it down at the camping store in town, Sarge. Why?"
  • Sergeant Eldridge: Drop jaw. Stare. Walk away, mumbling...

How I eventually made sergeant is a mystery. :D

Handgun?

Nah. I'll take a good radio, GPS, laser designator and dedicated air support with gunners that like me a lot.
And an extra magazine or two for the rifle.

Sounds like a spotter's gear, but what's a laser designator?
Sort of out of date since GPS guided bombs are all the rage now, but used to be you'd get some fine young gentleman on the ground to point a little laser at a target and the wee flashing dot would tell certain falling bombs to pretty, pretty please come play. Can be used with a few kinds of arty shells too.

GPS guided bombs technology is pretty cool. I'm surprised no one thought about it a long time ago.

Out of what I actually own right now, I'd probably take my SA Milspec .45 or my Beretta Brigadier Inox in 9mm. If I had a S&W Airweight in .38spl, I'd take that as a backup.

My friend is a LT in Army Intel. He's supposed to be heading up an interegation unit over in Iraq. I told him to take his 9mm Sig Pro but I'm not sure if he did.

Well, seeing as the first satellite was launched in 1978, and the GPS system has only officially been considered fully operational since 1995, I'm not sure what "a long time ago" could have been.

cordex, that's cheating! And where's the fun in that, anyway?

LEFT TWO FIVE, FIRE FOR EFFECT!

Now, THAT'S FUN!

:D

Roger that Quartus. Armor made it nice to pack extra 'gear' also.
Duffles full of groceries and clothing made for being outside.
Not to mention wiring in the car stereo into the vehicle commo system.

I'd take a shovel so I could dig myself into the deepest hole possible and hide until the shooting was over. Let the guys in the airplanes and the tanks do the real work :)

Like Patton said, the object is not to die for your country but to make the other poor son-of-a-bitch die for his.

You would have to be an idiot if you did not take a gun and caliber already supported by the military, such as your own Beretta 92. Otherwise, no parts if it breaks and if you choose any other caliber, no ammo for you.

Just where the heck are you going to find .45 acp ammo in Iraq or Kuwait? How about in Afghanistan?

Fortunately, the military helps reduce the potential idiocy and has since sometime after the Civil War when they came to realize how ineffective having troops with several different calibers on the battlefield truly was as they rarely were able to assure that each could have enough ammo for his own particular weapon and caliber.

Since the question is fantasy, (Uh......the feds don't really let you take you own weapons) the fact that they would supply you with whatever ammo you want is also fantasy, and doesn't beg the literal explosion of intellectualism you've posted. Don't take the question or the answers so seriously.

I'd stay with the issue rifle. No need for a handgun in a real war (I found that out once).

If I was staying around Baghdad for a while and could guarantee supplies, I'd have a Remmy 870 shotgun.
