SHTF...What guns would you take?

IMHO being on the move in a SHTF scenario is a doomed plan.

I won't have to choose what to carry as we'll be staying put, prepared to defend our resources from the unprepared.

If I were in a post-apocalyptic world, it would probably be best to make sure one of your firearms is a flintlock. I don't see any more ammo shipments coming to Wal-Mart in that world.
Why? Won't be any more shipments of Goex either. If you can manufacture black powder, then we are in a recovery scenario. Nobody with technical chops would be re-inventing flintlocks or percussion cap arms knowing the superiority of breech loaders.

SHTF will be about food, pure and simple. What gathers food best is what will be best for everything.

Black powder isn't as hard to make as you'd believe with accessible materials.

But the point is that in a post-apocalyptic world, ever shot you take is one less than you will EVER had if manufacturing has ended.

I agree that "on the move" increases risk of exposure. So I would not move unless absolutely necessary - such as food "gathering" forays.

With that said, I own the necessary tools to get whatever I may need.

Walking around in the doo ,with a visible long gun, in unfamiliar territory, is a good plan for getting shot. All the bug in types will see is a predator.:)

JustJim has it right; it is about food and water. You also need to have the means to defend one's resources as there will be people that are starving and willing to do anything for food. It is not a pleasant scenario and one that I hope never happens in North America. Few will survive alone.

Black powder may not be "hard to make" but unless you live near a source of sulfur, you are looking at enough stability for some level of mining and trade.

When the system breaks down you will become a predator. Hopefully just toward animals to eat however the same criminal element that walks today will still be around.

People in general are good and will work together for the common good. Hiding in your house won't get you fed nor will running around the neighborhood with an AK.

He with the most food will have the most power.

Wally, I agree... but that wasn't the point I was trying to make. The point I was trying to make is that if we are in a "Road Warrior" world (not realistic) and actually planning for that, there are a lot of holes in the "What firearm" question.

After all, Thundaar the Barbarian used a sword. :) I figure that they used up all the ammo sometime before we all started mutating.

A .22lr and a .308 bolt rifle. The .22 would cover all hunting needs, and most defense situations. The .308 would give you something to reach out and touch with, keeping any serious threats a healthy distance away.

The thing with the .22lr is a single person could reasonably carry 2,000 rounds of ammo with them, and never have to worry about scrounging for ammunition.

In bad times you are what you look like. Carrying a hunting gun makes you look like a hunter. Carrying a AK makes you look like trouble. Travel should be with the idea of what you look like.

well that you jim. also the main thing is not to be seen. maybe get a gillie suit. {i forgot how to spell it}.i know their really heavy and hot, but hey, maybe their will be a nuclear winter. I'm tired gonna go back to bed.

I think I'd go with my Mossberg 500 12 gauge and my XD-40, both are reliable and lightweight, easy to shoot. I don't anticipate any need for long range shooting, I would anticipate 30 yards being the max, in that case, the shotgun is devastating.

Too many people have a Mad Max type view. Bad guys will be killed on sight and good people will band together for the common good. People need a society and will always work together for survival.

If you really want to prepare for disaster do it with your best neighbors. Build a community that you won't have to live in fear and work together.

Men who choose to walk alone will die alone. It's about food and what guns gather food the best. The town may not like that you just shot the ducks out of the local down town pond but they will understand the need. (kind of nice them old ladies making them ducks fat all these years on bread crumbs)

AK47, .357 DA revolver, short 12ga, machete,
I have a place planned, it is all most completely unknown, has food, water, and you can see people coming for a few miles away. excellent cover and multiple escape routes, 'cause you can't hide out forever

How many people in the state of Oregon?

If you walk around with an AK or AR15, you will be viewed as a predator and more than likely the enemy if you aren't law enforcement or the US Army. You may want to rethink some of your choices. If it were bad, these people would be shot on sight. Think about it.
