Well ive been itchin to get my first gun. I wanted it to be a .243. So today we went to cabelas in ftworth to LOOK at guns. I walked out the door with a .22 savage with scope for $99.99 + tax.

Like I said this is my first gun so I have alot to learn. I will state now, excuse my noob questions, lol.

I have been readin around here for a few days and decided to post not that I have a gun. I look forward to spending hours upon hours advancing my firearm knowledge.

I want to get to the gun range with my father in law so he can help me sight it in a teach me a thing or two.

Well I just wanted to introduce my self and say HI!

Welcome aboard, Spyder. And no, we don't think you're a bad person. To the contrary, buying a gun is a good thing, and starting off with a .22 is a great way to break in and develop some good techniques before moving on to center fire cartridges. .22s are so popular for an afternoon of inexpensive plinking that many of us have multiple versions in addition to our other rifles. And you won't have to look around here long before you see threads that indicate that many of us believe that no collection is complete without at least one good .22 in the fold.

So good on ya, welcome, and shoot straight!

Thats good you got a .22 becuase .243 might cost so much to shoot that you would quit. $15 for 20 rounds can do that to some poeple. A .22 is the best caliber for a first rifle so you did good on that. Did you get a bolt action or the semi auto?

Buy lots of different .22LR ammo so you can try different stuff. Not all shoots equally well in all firearms. Its just trial and error. But the last thing you want is to be shooting one brand of ammo and not realize that the reason you can't hit anything is the ammo.

Yeah ive seen some good prices for .22 ammo. I was about to ask for suggestions for ammo. I guess ill go buy a box of everything. lol. I found a brick of 100 for 5 bux at academy. Cabelas website is so hard to navigate when looking for ammo, I gave up.

Im glad everyone thinks I did the right thing going with a .22.

Happy camper!

You can buy bulk packs (usually, everybody just calls 'em bricks) of 500 or 550 rounds for about $15 at Walmart. It's fairly cheap ammo, and if your gun is a semi it may prefer certain types of ammo over others (for reliable feeding, etc.) so trying a bunch of different kinds is exactly what you should do. :)

Have fun! I got my .22 when I was 12 and I haven't outgrown it yet :D

22's are wonderful guns

CCI stingers are about the hottest rounds you will find in the 22 category. Once you get to the point you feel comfortable shooting safely, go find yourself a rural area and ask the locals if they need any pest control done. Shooting groundhogs with a 22 is a great pastime and really reduces their impact to farming lands. And you can shoot all day pretty cheap too.

Welcome to the club, bring your friends. America needs more responsible gun owners.

Welcome Spyder and you did a very smart move in buying a 22. Great choice for a first gun.

I agree with Legionnaire in that owning a .22 shows a true enthusiasm of the shooting sports. My savage .22 happens to be fairly picky with what types of ammo it likes, so make sure you have at least three or four different types when you go to the range, and bring a whole bunch with you. You can always save what doesn't work in your savage in your next .22 :)

.22's, the gift that keeps on giving.

No, you're not a bad person, you're a happy person and that is all that counts :)

Of COURSE you're a bad person! You just went out and bought a gun! I think you should feel very, very guilty.

You can assuage your guilt, of course, by just sending me the gun for proper disposal....

You have some good times in store!

Jeff

I'm of the opinion that everyone should own at least 1 example of a .22lr weapon. The first gun I ever purchased was a Ruger 10/22 carbine and I don't think there has ever been a time when it didn't come with me to go shooting.
Since then, I've acquired 3 more .22 weapons.
A Ruger Standard (Mk1)
A Marlin model 39 (yes folks, an original 39, not 39A)
A Savage model 66 rebranded as a Sears house brand.

They all work flawlessly and at least 2 always come with me out to the desert.

My first gun was a 12 gauge shotgun. My first handgun was a .22 pistol. I now have two .22 rifles as well. Love them, and they are great for young kids to shoot. My son has a blast with his rifle, and my daughter loves the pistol.

"just remember, trigger control!"

Well I wanted a bolt action. But oh well, Yes I will have to learn trigger control.....oh wait  ammo is cheap!

CrazySpyder-

First, welcome to THR!

Second, welcome to the wonderful world of gun ownership! Careful though, they breed when you're not lookin'.

Third, remember always:

1. Treat all guns as if they were loaded.

2. Keep your finger off the trigger until you're ready to fire.

3. Be sure of your target and what's beyond it.

4. Don't point a gun at anything you're not willing to destroy.

Have fun!

Have fun,but never underestimate the .22---a high school friend was killed by one when he and his buddy were rabbit hunting with .22s.Don't get careless.Don't want to lecture, but just had to relate this.

I hope you realize you just bought the gun you're going to leave to one of your children.
This is fantastic. A new shooter.
Get out and shoot that puppy. It's a .22 and it won't break. Mine is over 40 years old and still shoots wonderfully.
I just loaded up for a day at the range. The first gun loaded was my .22.
Happy shooting.

I've kinda eased into my 60s now and I haven't sold most of the firearms that I've picked up along the way. A few I regret selling, but that was an economic nesessity.

Most of what I/we have are .22s.

Most 'fun' guns were, respectively, a Rossi .22 pump for me and the kids.

Marlin 39A that I bought with my discharge pay in '69.

A Ruger Super Single Six that I had to sell early in my marriage to resolve a debt.

There are others, mostly Winchesters and a Ruger and Nylon 66, but I think that you understand.....22s are fun.

salty.

Yes I do realize that this gun I WILL pass down to my kids. I told my g/f this after I bought it.

Man I didnt think so many people would back me up on the decision of buying a .22 for my first gun. I am so anxious to get out to the range! Now I just need to find a good one!

Enjoy your 22 and its always been my favorite and 1st gun. Now, I have many but still like to plink with that Nylon 66 I bought 40 years ago. Still a tack driver and holds 14 rounds. Steve48

Welcome to the forum, Im pretty new here myself - This place is a great resource with a solid community. That reminds me is there THR merchandise? Need me a shirt or a hat.

My first .22 was (and still is) a Winchester 9422, soon after they came out with it.
99.95 at Caldors (a local department store). Still have the original receipt....
