I never thought I'd say it but after 20 years of shooting handguns, I think my handgun collection is about complete. There is only one pistol left that I (realistically) want to get, and that is a SIG P229-ST (all stainless P229), --which will be available later this year-- and that I'll only get if it's available in 9mm.

I've bought, sold, and traded a whole bunch of handguns over the years, but the one's I have now are accurate, reliable, and fit my hands/needs perfectly. They are:

Ruger Bearcat (actually it's my 13yo's but I'm keeping possession of it until he's older)
S&W M63 4"
S&W M640 .357 mag.
S&W M14 6"
S&W M65LS
Seecamp LWS .32acp
SIG P225
FN Hi-Power
FN DAO Hi-Power
Colt 1903 Hammerless
Colt M1911A1 WW2 Reproduction

I realize that alot of folks on this forum have a much larger handgun collection, but mine has a pistol for just about every need that I might have. The only exception being a SAA or clone, if I get involved with CAS in the future. ;)

Well I see you've got a Sig P225 on the list, so I guess you really are almost done. Your collection is a bit larger than mine, but fairly similar. I couldn't do without my Ruger 22/45, though.

Ending Gun Collecting

Me. too. After 20 years and $kkkkk of dollars I've tried to hang it up myself.

Then something comes up. Like this new Ruger smaller framed Vacquero.
Or What's Gaston going to bring out later this year?

It's easier to just read about them now but the old pull to have it is still there.

One thing that has helped is the demise of several gun ranges in my area, and eyes that are not what they used to be.

Yep! I've almost got it under control......almost. Besides there's no more room in the safe. Almost....Yep. I really do have to get into another hobby.
Any suggestions?

I've been in "consolidation mode" of late and have what I consider to be my needs covered. (I don't know anyone who has all the 'wants' covered!) I started out by thinking about consolidating my caliber needs as I was going broke trying to shoot everthing I had every time I went to the range. I also found myself shopping for and buying guns more than I was shooting and want/need to reverse that trend! I got rid of (or am getting rid of) everything other than my 1911's and J/K-frame revolvers. This way I can stick with just .45's or .38/.357's and stay well stocked. I love both calibers and platforms so I don't think I'm missing out on anything. I'm trying to convince myself I don't need to own every gun I take a shine to! I can shoot just about anything I am curious about by going shooting with friends or to the local range that rents a variety of guns. I've boiled down to the following and think I've got the bases pretty much covered.

5" 1911 + 3" Model 65 .357 - Range/House/Car/General use
3" 1911 - belt carry
airweight 'j' - pocket carry
P3AT - ultra small/ultra light for being out and about with just gym shorts or similar attire. I just recently got the .38 and may decide that I don't need the kel-tec anymore. I'll wait a while then decide whether I need to carry anything at all if I need "less" than the snubby.

I really do have to get into another hobby. Any suggestions?
How about paying of my gun collection. That seems to be never ending. ;)

Other options: Politics, help us fight the good fight. Reloading, so you can afford to shoot more and have less time to do it. Education, become a firearms instructor or trainier.

All still related to your "old" hobby. :)

I have been 'done' a few times :banghead: :banghead: Then I bought a S&W model 19, my USPc 9  then my 1st 1911, 2nd 1911 & my 3rd :what: I'm done til my next "must have!"
Good luck w/ your being done!

oddly enough, i find myself adding gear and ammo a lot more than guns. I' don't want to be one of those guys with 60 handguns in their collection that they never shoot. i'm just not into collecting. i'm into shooting. i shoot all of my guns regularly (with the exception of a wilson scattergun 12ga that was an impulse buy and i really have little use for)

I can easily see a day where i won't need any more guns, but reloading equipment and components are killing me. It's only been like, 3 weeks since i got 32lbs of that new DP 73 powder, and I've already gone through almost half lbs of it...

and for the love of God, scopes and flashlights cost as much or more than the guns nowdays. geez, even a decent bag is 20% of the cost of the gun you'll put in it.

I am with you. Have owned probably 50 or so in the last 10 years, but I have sold or multi gun traded down to 15 or so handguns and 10 or so rifles. My best are the SIG 225, 226, 3 Kimbers, Wilson KZ45, SA Loaded, Colt (Python), HK usp45, EG Mak, Smith 458, Kahr P9, Browning Buckmark, AK, AR, several deer rifles, a couple of shotguns and some old military mausers. Pretty much down to 9mm or .45 handgun calibers except for the Mak, Python and a 10mm Kimber. Have had several Glocks and now have none. I found my preference to be guns with a hammer. I have found that 1911s are the best shooters period, IMHO the SIGs are the best all around made, The Python (flawless 1969 royal blue w/ Colt Custom Shop grips) will win any beauty contest. I have browsed the gun shows and the classifieds and for the last few months I can say there is nothing else I want. I did not even bother to go the gun show right around the corner from me last weekend. A year or 2 ago, that would have been a major event for me. Now I just want to shoot , hunt, customize and tinker with what I have. Sure I will likely buy or trade another one day, but I don't feel the same thrill about buying another as I used to. Somebody help me!!! :uhoh:

I never thought I'd say it but after 20 years of shooting handguns, I think my handgun collection is about complete.

You are very good at self-delusion. Do you also think that you are tall, have rugged good looks, and women faint at your approach from unrequited burning sexual desire??????

Well, you've certainly got every handgun you will ever NEED.

Now it's time to work on whatever handguns you WANT!!!

In the words of Gus McCray - "life is short - shorter for some than others". It's time to start collecting those "toys" you want.

Wow! Looks as if there are a few of us in the same pickle jar. I was an RO in the Military in the 70's and stopped reloading in the 90's. Still have ammo to touch off. Giving fire arms away. Love to. Cept My daughter is becoming a gun nut and wants my "givemups", soon as I'm thru with them.

But it is comforting to know like minded people exist in our shooting world.

Btw. I've never owned a 1911. I think that would be fun. The Plain Jane off the shelf. Must be reliable with no fluff an buff to get it to work right. 45 or 10 mm. Any ideas?

calzoom,
If you want a 1911 just to mess aound with get a .45. Just messing around with a 10mm is much more expensive. For plane jane get a entry level Springfield or Colt. But you have to be mentally prepared in the 1911 world to possibly need tweeking (usually different magazines), worst case a basic reliability job from a smith to run right. However, most will be right out of the box. But the shooting pleasure and performance of a 1911 is worth the trouble. Warning: It may cause you to be in the buyers market again. ;)

I think it was about 25 or 30 guns ago that I said, "There just isn't anything else to buy. I've got everything that I want."

But there's always something else.

I got this pistol a couple days ago. What a fun piece of machinery. :)

I occasionally think it but i dont ever say it outloud. i dont like people laughing at me

I have been consolidating for the past few weeks and have narrowed my handguns down to the bare necessities for me...

Glock 17 - acquired yesterday and it satisfies my "need" for an inexpensive shooter that I can carry OWB if I feel like it. It also replaced the CZ 75B that I liked ok, but couldn't shoot any way but bullseye style worth a crap.

Springfield Armory Lightweight Bi-tone - the perfect carry gun for me. Gov't size that carries well IWB, but light enough to keep my back/hip from hurting as bad.

SW 642 - j-frame for pocket/ankle/backup carry. I can carry this when wearing any style of clothing and if I have to rely on it as a primary, I do not feel undergunned.

Ruger 22/45 - .22 plinker for fun, cheap practice and to train new shooters

Ruger GP 100 - gotta have a 4" K/L sized revolver. Besides it was a gift from my mother.

SW 638- my wife's carry gun. Enough said.

Recently sold...

CZ75B- super accurate, but I hated shooting it in IDPA
Springfield Loaded Gov't. Model - good gun, but too heavy for all day carry.
Kel-Tec P3AT- never carried it and wanted to consolidate calibers.

Still in the "to buy" list...

1911 chambered for .38 Super - ESP in IDPA and I have started getting more intersted in this round now that I am reloading

S/A Revolver in .45 Colt - it's like a requirement or something...probably a Ruger Vaquero

.44 mag or larger DA Revolver - Handgun hunting and just for $%*&s and giggles...maybe a 5" N-frame, SW329 or maybe the .500SWM.

With every gun I ever bought, I thought I'd always reached my maximum...all I'd ever "need". It took me 16 years to amass a collection of about 8, then I moved to Houston, the gunshow capital of the universe, in 1989. In the next 6 years, my collection swelled to over 30 handguns. I left Houston in 1995, and I bought my last handgun in 1998. I've been sober for almost 7 years.

Now, I live in Missouri, and we have a little special permit we're supposed to get each time we want to take possession of a handgun. We're supposed to give the sheriff a few bucks and tell him what we're buying before we buy it...or inherit it or receive it as a gift, or trade, or whatever. It sticks in my craw, and I can't see telling the government what I'm going to buy, and where it's going to be. The sheriff we have in our county right now is pretty 2nd Amendment friendly, but he won't be there forever, and I don't want some slopeheaded Sarah Brady bastard child to come looking for me in a few years. So, I doubt that I'll buy another handgun while I live in Missouri. I sure would like to have a SW1911 and a CZ75B dualtone .40, though. Oh well, I have enough to keep me occupied. ;)

So, you think you're done......

Ok, so you think you're done....I'd say you are just getting started...

What collection could possibly be complete without a single HK in the mix?
