I'm going to a Bush Rally: Write my sign

I was so busy that I was unable to get to the computer to check out the ideas before work today. All I could do was fire up Word and download a pic of a scoped AR-15 with sling.

I wrote, in 256 point font,

I recently went to a Bush campaign stop. Signs were stickily forbidden.
It was the same here, that is, no "home-made signs."

Mine was taped to the back of a 12 x 24 BUSH - CHENEY sign. But as I walked up the ramp to the Collesium, one of the campaign workers spotted it and said that I couldn't go in with it. Then as I went to position it on a bench for others to see, he actually read what was written. He said, "Ya know, I have an AK-47...let's say I didn't see that sign."

I carried the sign into the building and went through the Secret Service security barrier and dumped my worldly possessions on the table for inspection. The uniformed Secret Service agent saw my SureFire and said out loud, "Geez, he has a nicer flashlight than *I* have..." then he added, "And wouldn't you know, he has a this (handcuff key) on his key chain."

I had a red-striped ticket which meant I got to be on the floor, just sixty feet from the podium, dead-center.

I walked inside to listen to the band (cover band) which was led by a female "World Surfing champion." In between songs, noted politicians and a celebrity or two would speak to the crowd. Congressman Flake (a Goldwater-esque, small - L libertarianish guy); a new, much thinner, dare I say buff Congressman J.D. Hayworth; actor Rick(y) Schroeder; Congressman Rick Renzi; Congressman Shaddegg; Arizona DiamondBacks left-fielder Luis Gonzales (unfortunately, Luis has been quoted saying some anti-gun thangs, along with retired first baseman Mark Grace); Senator Jon (I didn't mean to vote for the 1994 Crime Bill and NRA gave me an A-rating anyway) Kyl.

As they spoke, I held up my sign for the speaker to see as well as those around me. After a while, another campaign official came up behind me and was about to snag my sign, but he, too, read the sign, have me a wink and went away. People were very curious about my sign. Some would give knowing glances, others would give a thumbs up. Quite a few were very vocal in their support. I talked to local 550KFYI host Tom Liddy (son of G. Gordon) who said that he had made it a point to buy two when he got wind of the 1994 Crime Bill.

After a while (just after 6pm), Senator John (gunshow loophole) McCain came on with Kyl with ... and then Dubya. All of a sudden I looked up and saw that the place was absolutely packed. 15,000 people.

I took the opportunity to blaze a trail to the right and deeper toward the front. This placed my about 30 feet from the Prez. I held up the sign often during the first few minutes of his speach. He turned his eyes directly to me and gave me a nod, and continued on.

Either that, or he gave one of about 1,000 people behind me a nod ;) but he had to look down at me from the podium, not up to the cheap seats.

He saw the sign. He knows we're out there.

The speech was over after about 52 minutes. And, no, though he touched on many, many issues... not a word about the Right to Keep and Bear Arms.

Then there was a slow, controlled crush, call it a polite mosh pit, to get to the receiving line to shake hands with Kyl, McCain, and Bush. I reached out my hand to shake Dubya's but was about six inches too far away. I held out the sign and he eyeballed it again. Kyl saw it as well but it was too noisy to communicate. Two years ago I confronted Kyl at a large GOP function and had him 'promise' to not support renewal of the AW ban and the rest of the crime bill. I'm fairly sure he remembered me, or at least my hat. ;)

When McCain came by with his overly tan-maked-upped wife, Cindy, there was a gap in the line (I guess fewer people wanted to shake his hand). I moved to the rope one foot from the Manchurian Candidate.

So I was finally able to get close enough to ask John McCain about the sunset of the 1994 Crime bill due on September. His only response was to turn away from me and to mockingly talk to another person, "Ban? What ban? What's he talkin' about? I don't know what he's talking about. Ban?"

No signs? So, the 1st amendment is null and void then?

I think you have to go to the designated "free speech zone" to exercise your first amendment rights. It's sort of a cage located away from the real proceedings, the purpose of which is to remove the 1-A rights from the people near the candidate. I understand the desire/necessity to restrict people who actually disrupt the event, but I think allowing only ardent supporters to attend is the same as requiring a government license for free speech.

I know there is a line that has to be drawn somewhere, but that line shouldn't exclude people who can disagree politely in public.

In defense of the no home-made (ie, no potentially distracting) signs, it was likely a national RNC event or combo Arizona/National RNC event. Therefor it was not run by government it was a private concern. None of the Secret Service, cops or deputies batted and eye, and some of them gave me a nod, including one Secret Service agent (when bush had already left the building) as he cocked his head to read my sign when he was walking by. Yeah, it could have been a polite, "I'm too busy to mess with you" nod, but then, why would he have bothered?

BTW, for all you girl-gunnies at THR, I'm sure you would have thought, as a group, the Phx PD, S-Service, Maricopa deputies, armed forces members, and the color guard members were young and hot and gave the (much younger than he looks on TV) Rick Schroeder a run for his money. :neener:

Was McCain trying to be funny or what?

McCain trying to be funny on THIS issue? Don't think so.......He's not much for supporting the Second Amendment. Of course, why should he be, since he's helped to gut the First. :fire:

Flake is my guy, and I would still be a Republican if the 'Party' were more like him. I'm worried that his primary opponent, Stan Barnes, will score some points against him in the upcoming primary. I sure hope we keep him. Hayworth, if you didn't know, had the 'stomach surgery'.

I have some words for Sen. McCain that won't fly here on THR, so I'll let you just imagine how uncomplimentary they might be.

Attached is one scanned photo of my sign.

It is next to the KGUN TV van. KGUN is out of Tucson and is ironically a very anti-gun TV station.

I'll attach one of McCain attempting to ignore me, and another of Dubya glancing my way from the podium.

The one with Bush looking directly at me was a little too blurry (I was standing on my tippy-toes and moving too much for the shutter speed, I guess).

I was about 30 feet away.

Do you think he could have missed my sign if he tried? ;) :neener:

And last, but not least, the Raging McCainiac.

This was after the speech and after Bush had already passed which allowed me to get to the rope line. It was McCain's second trip passed me. He was up against the barrier shaking hands. When he got back to me, he took two steps back and traversed the danger area (me) and then went back to shaking hands once clear of my intrusive sign.

I'm pretty sure that's Cindy McCain in the background.

Rick I'm impressed.

Tell me, How did you come to get the tickets that put you so close and dead center?

I'm dissapointed in McCain. I thought he was a bigger man than that.

Almost random luck with some Divine Intervention?

To get the tickets one had to go to a local GOP HQ. Mine was on the west side in Peoria. I had heard that the tickets were going so fast that there was a shortage. Sure enough, I walked in to the HQ which was in a nice strip mall and people were already scrambling for tickets. There were none for me. :(

The workers were on the phone calling those who had reserved tickets to make sure they were actually going to show. One person arrived with eight tickets saying that she couldn't go because a family member was in the hospital. Those tickets were scooped up by someone who was there ahead of me.

I learned that there were two types of tickets. One with a yellow border, for general admission (ie, not on the floor), and one with the coveted red border which allowed access to the floor. Those were going to VIPs and campaign volunteers, and some where already there on the cell-phone bank earning the right to get one.

I stayed around for 45 minutes (and began to doubt myself and whether this activism would bear fruit). After the head lady got unburied from all the people tugging on her ear and calling her on the phone she asked me if I was really-really-really going to show up. I said there was no way I wasn't going to show. Then she asked me if I would do some phone banking tonite. I said I would (I'm not too bad on-the-fly on a phone but scripted messages would really annoy me). She then asked if I knew others who would like to go. I got on the my cell phone and all declined. I just needed one for myself.

As it happened, when she reached for a ticket, all she had left was red-border floor tickets as she had given away the yellow ones minutes before. She didn't ask me to do the phone bank (I think it was a test of my sponge-worthiness).

And off I went.

As for my activities with the sign the next day...

If Bush is coming to your town, I would not pass up the opportunity to "speak" to him.

I would do it differently the next time, as I had no back up plan if my sign got tossed.

I could have taken two official Bush-Cheney signs with the offending personal messages and them taped them together with the home-made signs inside. They would have been none the wiser, and I would have had two signs, one as back up. Or I could have a rolled-up back-up sign with a little roll of Scotch tape. Or, or, or.

Also, I risked quite a bit by waving my sign early on for second stringers such as Flake and Hayworth and blowing my cover before the main event. It would have been wiser to wait until Bush showed up.

Guys, if Bush keeps seeing these signs over the next three months, he's gotta take notice. Even if it's one per every-other event.

One dude in a hat with a sign in Phoenix is a blip. A handful throughout the country is a disturbing trend.

No one said no to homemade signs inside when he was at the Superior Dome in Marquette. One sign I saw inside said "Sportsmen for Bush" I thought that was kinda cool.
