Immigrants of the old America had to decide to give up thier way of life, thier security, and take a one way trip across oceans that were long hard journeys to cross. The people then trickled in small enough amounts that they did not replace existing american values or culture but adapted to it. Instead of coming in swarms and keeping thier own culture, thier own language and expecting thier new home to adapt to them.
America was a nation started by colonialists trying to actualy create a society and live in it. Mexico was started by Spainiards that were trying to extract all Gold and Silver and send it home.
The ruling people in early colonial America were trying to balance issues and deal with problems for long term progress. The ruling people in Mexico were noticing the natives were dying off in record numbers and making poor slave labor and that large numbers of african slaves would be needed for short term progress.
The American colonists were unfair to the relatively small number of natives (even though the American Indian war had more support than any war since due to a real danger to colonists from angry natives)while trying to compete for resources, the spaniards in Mexico were not competing but exploiting them as slaves and intentionaly working them to death much like Nazi concentration camps.
The history of both is long and detailed, but the result is that America was left with a culture centered around freedom and trying to be fair without infringing on the freedoms, and would right its wrongs from that foundation. While Mexico was left with people detached and distrusting and fearful of thier government. A sense of loyalty to family above rules or regulations, above right or wrong. Even thier politicians and ruling classes subscribe to the steal from the masses to give to thier familes philosophy. A system that does not work and leaves you with a culture and a nation that would crumble without a rich neighbor to leech from.

When modern Mexicans move to America they are not encouraged to adapt and embrace American culture, they are told they should be proud of thier existing culture that they are Latinos and different from Americans. This leads to entire neighborhoods and entire regions where the culture and lifestyle that is a failure in Mexico is a failure in America. That to remain true to thier own they must be less American than other Americans.

Thier next generation is then raised in a school system that tells them how awful America has been to its minorities and that they are entitled to preferential treatement to attone for it. Thier own culture then furthers ideas that they are natives (when most are primarily spanish, native, african mix) and that somehow Americans are on thier land. When in reality the border they claim was what the Spaniards had claimed only recently(the slaughterer of the natives) and few natives lived anywhere around the desert that makes up our current border, and surely no Aztecs did. So thier views are distorted to make them feel even more of an outcast and more self entitled.

This does not lead to new Americans, but to expansion of Mexicans living in America, quite a different thing. The massive influx of immigration from a single corrupt nation must be slowed to give time to allow immigrants to identify as Americans and become Americans. This is further compounded by the fact that Mexico is just a hop skip and a jump from America, so they do not have to make the life altering change to forever leave thier past behind to come to America like prior American immigrants did.

I would welcome new Americans from any nation on earth, but I do not welcome conquest by those unwilling/unable to become American in values and culture and self identity. We need to stop illegal immigration or it will weaken the foundation of the American ideals.

If I want to make beer cold I need to have a lot more ice in my cooler than I do beer. A lot of ice and a little beer means we will have cold beer.

If you have a lot of beer and very little ice than you'll find that the ice melted and the beer isn't cold.

Why people cant see that the same process applies to immigration is beyond me:rolleyes:

I'll get nailed for this..by some people.
But I do believe no one should be allowed to have more than 3* children for free.
4. 5. 6. .. etc .. parents would have to pay. Dearly.
Reason for this: exponential growth. Though good for the economy, it fills the world with more people even though there are already too many of us. Yes.. it's not exactly freedom... but then there is little chance of soiling pristine newly discovered lands as all the real estate is already taken.

Anyway.. what defines an American ? Patriotism? Mastery of English language*?
Willingness to uphold the principles of the US constitution ?
Being a protestant ?
Or is an American someone who believes money is the measure of all things?
(though vigorously professes to believe in God)

Folks, this is a very common attitude among Euros about America. They feel that we do not have a culture worth preserving, if one at all. We exist as a mere depository for peoples from other lands, where the acquisition of money is the only value shared commonly. Well, it was not always so, my friend. You may have to be an American to understand this, but there really was once a thing called American culture. You can get glimpses of it from such as Normal Rockwell paintings.

We have a long history as a people. We were once very proud of that history, and cherished the memories of the men who Founded our nation. For whatever reason, all that has been, seemingly intentionally, destroyed, or almost so. Only a remnant any longer values it, even among our own. We were once the great experiment in liberty, but that's all in the past now, and few remember. So, cheer up. Your vision of America is becoming a reality as we speak, and ever fewer even remember a time when it meant something unique to be an American. Today we are just another depository for the world's peoples, nothing more, though it wasn't always so.

I do know there is something unique.. I was just wondering..

.. most of you probably hate Soros .. but he said one good thing..
- that the moral values that made capitalism work seem to slowly disappearing, and
the only thing that is valued by some people are get rich quick schemes.
(the British Empire was founded on a 5% return on investments.. this from Cecil Rhodes.. imperialist second to none.. )

I am afraid that ignorance of history of one's homeland is universal among semi-literate people. (those who get all their information from TV and don't read anything except shiny magazines)

They feel that we do not have a culture worth preserving, if one at all.
Does Europe have any culture worth preserving? Some good works of art, architectural -
(When I see pictures of recent architecture in the US.. I feel that poison ivy is strongly underutilized. It's the only solution to ugly architecture.. before someone invents invisibility paint... )
- styles, music ..

... and TV + pop culture seem to be almost a conspiracy aimed at converting everyone into a f*ked up jaded idiot. Everyone around the world watches the same crap in TV*, though sometimes it's dubbed...
(I spent some time browsing through a dating site... my head spins when I come across the expressions "hip-hop" and "tuning*" "partying" .. )

*basically idiots "pimping up" cars as if it meant something. What's the point ?
Their designs are often tasteless... though exceptions do exist.
I dislike rice cars and all kinds of smelly shiny noisy and quickly moving non-flying objects.

*recently read a book in which anchors were refered to as anchordolls. Appropriate.

Our history is not long at all. It's very brief, less than 250 years, one of the youngest nations in the world. Much of our culture is borrowed and adapted from others... some amalgam of all the above set with it's own spin from isolation and the free choices of free people.
Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!
What experiment, the American dream may be summarized by Lazarus's inscription when America was new. This freedom was the experiment. Maybe it will fail, we will discover some carrying capacity and idealism can't hold up against this reality.
