im looking for an inexpensive, roughly $300 9mm pistol that isnt a hi point.. one option is the star model B but is there anything else in this category to consider? and how reliable are these star pistols?

Look into the Canik TP9

I would look very strongly at a taurus pt92. They are not far off of your price point and are as nice of a 9mm as you could ask for. The grips are large, which doesn't work for everyone, but if you can hold the gun well then you can shoot it well. Very reliable, very accurate, very very nice gun for the money.

If it were me and only wanted to spend $300, I'd look for a used Ruger SR series pistol.

Kentucky Gun has the Ruger 9E, the budget version of the SR9, for $289 with free shipping. I can't think of a better deal for a high quality American made 9mm pistol.

Ruger 9E - Kentucky Gun

So which is it, dude?? You purport to be this all-knowing gun-guru in numerous threads, on multiple forums, and then turn around and start these threads asking for the most ridiculously basic advice imaginable, as though you're a teenager looking for his first gun.
You've done this many times that I'm aware of.
And if past history is any indication, you're still going to give detailed responses that shoot down nearly every piece of good advice you get.
From what I've read, you seem more than capable of answering your own question, already. You seem to have an affinity for starting threads that will predictably garner lots of repsonses, but then enjoy argumentatively dismissing all the good suggestions (already done it once). It shouldn't be long before you're posting stuff like, "what if I bought a so-and-so, and then re-barreled it, and then necked-down some so-and-so rounds....."?
And wouldn't a quick Google search will give you an idea of how reliable Star pistols are? The fact that you're even familiar with such a relatively obscure maker would seem to indicate more than a casual familiarity.
And what's with the hate-on for the Turks ?? The Canik's are solid pistols, from what I personally experienced and read. It ain't like you have a lot of options in this price range, if you want to avoid outright junk.

CZ99 (Zastava)
personally, I have a zastava rifle, and it's a well manufactured gun, but they have been bounced through so many importers etc that I wouldn't go that route. too hard to get parts or service.

And I'm concerned that canik might be the same way, which is a shame, I'd much rather give a company that it not gouging me my dollars. SOAPBOX WARNING:(which is most of them. Take glock for example {and i'm not trying to pick on glock. I like their guns, but lets use them as and easy target for the moment, that gun can't cost 100 bucks to make [probably lots less], and they haven't changed the basic design in 30+years so you know R&D costs are already amortized out. Even if you add in a large profit and cost for it being a gun and who knows what licenses and regulations you have to deal with it is still too expensive.

P11 is a better gun if a person were to go the keltec route. I wouldn't do it again, I have had 3. One escaped from my pocket while hunting and has never been seen or heard from again. That was a p11. I bought a pf9 shortly after to replace it only because I couldn't find a p11 in stock. Then a p3AT when I got rid of the pf9. The only 2 keltec products I would consider at the moment are pmr30 and p32.

The Taurus PT-111, a compact 12 round capacity 9mm is a great buy at under $300 and can sometimes be found below $250 new. For a larger pistol the Taurus PT809 can be bought from Bud's at $296 and is a more traditional hammer fired pistol.

The Canik 55 TP-9 V2 would also be a good inexpensive option for a new gun.

Steve C beat me to suggesting the Taurus PT 111 Millenium G2. I bought one last summer from PSA for $200. I like it.

I had a Star years ago that I liked but they are no longer in business so I believe it could be hard to find parts & magazines.

The only reason is that the SR series guns have way too narrow of a grip for me, and I think the Canik would fit me better.

I'd prefer a Ruger in general though.

The Caniks really surprised me. Not a fan of the sights. Mag release is a bit high, I hit it under rapid fire drills. Other than that, it'd make a good truck gun.
