My thoughts:

I think the myths here are the absolute nature of the statements.

I know for a fact that racking a shotgun will deter some criminals (at least the two who broke into my home) so that is not a myth. Will it make every criminal? No?

You shouldn't rely on the fact that a bad guy will be scared off by your show of force but it's nice if they are.
