Irrational Dislike

Can't say I have a dislike for any caliber, but sometimes the owners of certain calibers can be annoying. I only own four different calibers, 22, .308, 30-06 and the 32-40 Win., the later being a hand me down from my great-grandfather. Seems like every .270 owner I've ever known, and I know quite a few, has tried to brag up the virtues of the .270 over anything 30 cal. Now I just smile and tell them to Google longest sniper shots and go to the Wikipedia entry. It lists the longest shots over 1250 yards. You will find the .308 and 30-06 listed but no .270.

Your not going to find 7mmRM and a host of others that outperform either. The military does what they do for their own reasons. Doesn't mean squat to someone like me what's wants meat on the table..

As for the cartridge I dislike? 22 Mag

I guess it depends on what your needs are with whatever gun/cartridge you generally use. If a cartridge doesn't fit your particular needs then there's a better chance a person will "irrationally dislike" that cartridge. I believe that explains a small % of hate.

I mean, why hate a cartridge anyway? It's just a design. A concept. Another option. Just because it's there doesn't mean YOU have to use it. A man designed it, id say a person's problem would be with the designer, really.

I think rondaxe hit the nail on the head for the majority. It's not so much the cartridge, the design or its performance(or lack thereof) as much as it is some person that has soured us on certain cartridges. People bragging on their .308's doing everything the venerable 30-06 will do or the 270 or what have you. All the tactical Tom's and their 6.5 Creedmoor's and Glock's turned alot of traditionalist against the CM and Glock.

In a practical real world scenario most of the hated cartridges will do just as well as the one that person just adores in place of it. Guess that's what makes this "irrational dislike".

I'm really baffled by the number of people that dislike 270. I didn't realize there was anything to dislike about it. Not that any of my own dislikes make any sense.

To me it's kinda like a YouTube video. It can be a video of an angel holding a puppy while talking to a giggling child and the video will have 497 likes a 2 dislikes. What? Those 2 people not only didn't like it, but enough to actually click a button letting the world know.

Those kind of people are the only type that could dislike the critter gitter known as the 270Win. To not like a 30-06 or a 270 either one is plum unAmerican!

I'm not mad, I'm just disappointed....and mad!

My biggest gripe about the .308 Winchester is it's bland. Boring. Vanilla. Off white on an apartment wall.

However, it performs well. I have a light, short rifle and the .308 Win responds quite well. I do not shoot in 1000 yard matches. Nor do I pick middle eastern terrorists off rough mountain slopes in SW Asia. I refuse to shoot at game further than about 250 yards off.

Make up your own mind, you're all big kids.

Interesting thread. There are several cartridges I don't care for, but I think I have rational (not irrational) reasons for my dislike.

.30-30 - fine old cartridge that I dislike; why a .30-30 when you can have a .308? But perhaps it's more about my lack of love for lever actions ...
.300 Win Mag - another older design; what's with the stupid belt?
.270 Win - maybe my most "irrational" dislike, perhaps because I favor short action cartridges.
7.62x39 - another underpowered .30 ... from the Soviet Bloc no less

I LIKE the .308: capable versatility in a short action ... and I like it's offspring, the .243 Win and .260 Remington. Never owned a 7mm-08, but suspect I would like it, too.

I have all three, .270, .308. 30-06, and a .243, couple lever 30-30's and hunted deer and bear in Wisconsin's heavy woods for over 50 years.I like them all but I've killed 50-60 deer with my Rem 742 .308 carbine, and it's still my go to woods gun !!! hdbiker

I am primarily a hunter, and from that perspective, I think people like what has worked well for them, worked well consistently, and been enjoyable to use. Following that logic, I have a strong bias toward the 7mm-08. I love it, I recommend it whenever I get the chance. I may even go so far as to imply that it's the best choice for anyone... even though my rational intellect knows it's not.

On paper, I think the .270 has a lot to offer. But the one I had for a while was loud as crap! And it seemed to recoil like the pointy side of a 6# forge hammer in Babe Ruth's hands. Of the 3 VA whitetail shot with it, two ran more than 200 yds after and one wasn't ever recovered. All of this makes me not like it at all. But my evidence against it is all circumstantial, and the numbers on paper still make it an admirable chambering. Who knows... I may own another some day.

As a general rule, I don't like really loud, super super sonic rounds.

I also fall into the camp of those who detest the short, fat magnums. And yet, conversely, I don't like long actions either. So I guess I love the .308 and all it's beautiful children... but mainly the 7mm-08. ;)

I have a irrational dislike of the .223. It just looks anemic in my hand when I hold a cartridge. I can't think of any more irrational reason to dislike a caliber than that. At least all the functional pros weight out my irrational con.

Fun thread to read.I thought I was alone in not liking 308 .If my old 30-30 won’t do it I bring out the 30/06 and I hate 223/556.

Yep. Don’t see a gap getween the 30-30 and the ‘06 (unless you need semi auto). I’ve shot more deer with the 30-30 (and at longer ranges) than I ever have with an ‘06. Also agree in the 223... though I admit with embarrassment that I own 2 now only because it’s the cheapest practice round I can find
