Is $450 too much for a 1076?

I saw a 1076 at a local shop, very nice shape.
Their price was $450, and it's around $497.xx out the door.
I have been on the lookout for one for awhile, and went to the shop on a whim, thinking they would have one, obviously they did.
I know they're cheaper online, but after I pay a $50 transfer plus the taxes, I'll bet the price would be the same.
Plus I got to examine it first.

It's minty, and all it really 'requires' is new grips.
(I hate S&W's hard plastic grips on their autos.)
As a side note, 10mm prices seem to be a bit high in my locality.
Compared to a new/used 1911 pattern 10mm, it's a steal, and it's more compact.

Already got a razorback, if that matters.
Nothing special about the 1911 platform to me.
Never shoot it, I prefer wheelguns, and SIGs.
The smith 10mms are getting pretty hard to find, anyway.
I'm prolly gonna get it.
There's only a few guns that I want anymore, and new guns make me happy.

The cheapest one on gunsamerica is $395 +$50 transfer +shipping +tax= over $500

I may be wrong, but I don't think there are aftermarket grips for the 1076. The aftermarkets out there for the rest of the 10 series (Hogue)won't fit the 76 because of the frame mounted decocker.

The price of something continues to be sorta relative. I look at all these price check threads, and I see people splitting hairs over price differences of $50-100. I see people say that 'X' amount of dollars is too much to spend on a certain pistol in their area of the country, when I have only recently seem that very same gun sell for considerably higher where I live. I hear other people comment the same.
I am certainly NOT well off by any means... but I think that if you have the cash to spend, and it is a nice gun, and it is a gun that you REALLY WANT... I think its better to go ahead and get it. Especially concerning guns that are no longer made such as th 1076 you're looking at.
I have really REALLY missed out before- I have seen guns that I thought- "gee that seems high" I come back later and the gun is gone- and then the next example of that gun I see is $100 or so higher. Argh, I am always so disappointed when that happens.
I say- if it is a great gun that you want- go ahead and get it.

Correct on the aftermarket grips for the 1076. I saw someone that had the Hogue rubber grips on his though, he cut them to make them work. Wood grips are hard to find as the remaining wood over the decocking lever is too thin and prone to breakage.

Hmm... maybe I should buy the like new 1076 at my local shop for $400+tax...

That would be absolutely foolish. Please e-mail with the contact information so I can properly berate those purveyors of shoddy, overpriced merchandise.

1076

1076 .. is that the 5 inch barrelwith slide safety/decocker?

That sound just a little high. Offer $400 ... BUT, and this is a big BUT .. how many mags were with it or other accessories? If two mags, not bad and shoot for $400 or $425 area. Mags can be $30 to $50 each. Make sure the mags have yellow followers, not orange as the yellow follwers are upgraded for improved realiability.

Houge makes two types of grips for the 1000 series, finger grooved wrap arounds or rubber panels. I put rubber panels on my 1066 for $25 bucks. I little tricky, screws were not perfect length and had to replace screws with longer ones from a weavers scope rail I had sitting around unused.

I like the gun, just did not shoot it well. Traded for a very content SIG 226 so they reatian good value.

Get it for under $450, with mutli mags. Enjoy it ....

The 1076s that KY has may very well be the same as the ones Bill Hicks Distributors had a couple years back: FBI trade-ins. I picked up one from BHD back then and it was nearly perfect, for IIRC $375, w/night-sights.

Cool trivia point- the FBI guns were made without the standard S&W magazine disconnect, and had that warning engraved on the right side of the slide. The only 3rd Gen S&W made without the disconnect I believe.

FYI, the white follower mags are the updated ones. The yellow followers are the old style. FWIW, I have used both and had problems with neither.

Murphy's Gun Shop was where I saw the 1076
I remember seeing that one the same day I picked up the 1006. Getting senile in my old age I guess.

Decided on the full size instead.

Was actually more interested in the S&W 29 for $330 at Murphy's.

Get It

IMHO if you can handle it and look it over before purchasing, it's worth the few extra $$$ over an unseen cheaper gun. I once owned a 1076 and wish I still had it. Got the urge for a new gun and sacrificed the 1076. It was recently replaced it with a 1066. I know their are some law enforcement agencies replacing their 10mm S&W's, so the supply may increase soon. Could be a crap shoot on the condition of the pistols.

My 1066 is surprisingly accurate. I actually like some of the safety features on the 1066 better than the 1076. As a father now, I actually prefer the mag disconnect and manual safeties. Guess I must be getting older.

I paid $375 for the 1066. From what I've seen, the mystique of the 1076 "FBI" model draws more on resale. If the one you mentioned is in very good condition, $450 sounds like a fair price. In response to another comment, the S&W 10mm mags are relatively pricey.....be so advised.

S&W still has mags available. Retail is $34.95 so expect to pay that from S&W. Some online places sell them for a little cheaper if you shop around. They also pop up on auction sites from time to time.
