Is a double-stack subcompact your perfect size pistol?

Which size pistol is perfect enough to use as a range gun?

I have smaller than average hands, so though I can shoot double-stack compact and fullsize pistols I feel like double-stack subcompacts are really meant for my hand (especially with the shorter mags and pinky extensions). That being the case, most of my range guns have been doublestack subcompacts and my CC pistols have all been tiny singlestack subcompacts.

My two carry guns, Sig 1911 Carry Nightmare and S&W 1076, are the same guns I use at the range. Both single stack.

As a general rule of thumb, full size pistols with a longer sight radius are better, and more accurate at the range. But my H&K P30 and Sig P228 compacts are also excellent range guns.

I only own full size guns. While subcompacts would no doubt conceal better, I'd rather not have to spend any time shooting them.

I shoot all my guns at the range, full size guns are a bit easier to shoot more accurately.

hmm,

1911 Full size - Range Gun & HD
1991 Commander - #2 EDC
Range Officer Compact EDC
CZ 75B - Range Gun / HD

I have a friend with a double stack Para P14
and it's a TANK.

Not sure if there was a question asked here.

I like my range guns, carry guns, and HD guns to be about the same size and weight. Not sure why but my buying/selling trends over the years show I gravitate to the 20-35oz and 4" barrels for the majority of my handguns. I'll probably never have a Ruger Mk I-III or a 9" SAA or elaborate firearms like that. To some the 4" is considered a compact size with closer to 5" barrels being full sized.

Since I only carry subcompact now, that's what I shoot most of the time.

The P238 and the G42 can be shot extensively at the range without discomfort.

I mostly have compacts and subcompacts, but one full size that I love dearly.

I still prefer single stacks though, purely from an ergonomic standpoint.

I'm glad to see I'm not the only one who prefers a double-stack subcompact for range shooting, though we are obviously in the minority. I'm betting it has to do with the hand size.

It's not what you'd expect, but I shoot compacts better than full-size pistols. I can shoot better with a Glock 19 than with a Glock 17. I am also more accurate with a Sig P229 than with a Sig P226. Go figure.

For range use I want full sized preferably with a 5"+ long barrel - and I actually have tiny hands. I like having plenty of grip to hang onto and extra sight radius is always good.

For a double stack subcompact, you can hardly do better than a Glock 26. It's a blast to shoot at the range, easy to carry, and great for home defense. Mine would be the last gun I'd get rid of... I shoot it as well as a full sized 9mm.

Hand size probably has a lot to do with it.

My extra large hands shoot full-sized pistols much better than small ones.

For "fun" range work I prefer a full size. For carry I prefer a compact. Don't have much use for subcompacts myself.

That said, most of my range time is with my compacts as I prefer to practice mostly with my EDC (it changes from time to time, so practice is both fun and necessary).

I do well with full sized in target shooting and self defense practice. My full sized .45 is smaller than many but not compact. My subcompact .45 is a good shooter and my EDC. It takes more concentration to do as well with it. Both have a role and I shoot either with confidence. They are both single stacks.

I tried numerous guns before I purchased and ended up with guns that fit me and I can be accurate with. Double stacks are accurate for me but not comfortable.
