It seems most people have several guns of one particular brand: For example, one guy might say, "I have three Glocks, two XDs, five Sigs, etc..." But, for me, whenever the time comes for me to buy a new gun, I always want something different than I already have. I like variety. Sure, I'd love to have another HK- I have a USPc and wouldn't mind a P2000sk, but I like to see what else is out there...what the other guy has to offer.

Just wondering if anyone else thinks as I do, or, when gun shopping, you're always looking to expand the family of the brands you already have? Am I broken?! :D

Collectors are collectors
Some like for there to be a theme to their collections some just find an attachment to certain style

I tried that for awhile and had to come to the conclusion that I am simply an accumulator and nothing more
My collection has very little rhyme or reason other than that's what I wanted that day

I like to have many different styles so that I can experience the variety
Others believe that if you stick to one style them you will become more proficient than when you switch around so much

I also like to look at different brands. I'm always on the lookout for other guns to try out, and very open minded. Alot of gun owners, once they find a gun make they like, they tend to stick to that one brand. However, I will say when it comes to 1911s, I've grown quite attached to Springfield Armory, but Wilson Combat, Kimber, and Colt are brands I've considered for the future. You also gotta remember that one brand may work for one person, but not necessarily work for another person. Go with what you shoot best, even if it means sticking to one brand, but doesn't hurt to try out others.

For Pete's sake, you are not broken! :D When it comes to guns, I go for the feel, performance, look, and buy what appeals to me. When I go to a gun show I like to look at and consider everything. I own a couple of Rugers, a Browning Challenger, a S&W 357 magnum and I am always looking at Cobra derringers (I own one) which most enthusiasts consider a POS! :D

I go both ways. My default choice is to expand my collection of brands and styles. Before leave I had two Glocks (23, 26), a Beretta 92, and a Phoenix Arms .22. I bought a Kimber 1911 and a SIG P225 (used) to add ".45", "1911", "SIG", and "single stack" to my collection. My next few guns will be some assortment of a Ruger GP100 (revolver and .357 Magnum), a Keltec P3AT (pocket gun and .380), and maybe a Browning Hi Power. I have no urge to be the guy that has every make, model and special edition of <whatever brand> out there.

That said, I do find certain brands that really appeal to me. And they often let me increase my diversity, even while buying the same brand. For example, I'm very fond of Glocks. One gun I'd consider would be a Glock 20, which would let me branch out into 10mm. If I went in for a .357 SIG it would be a toss up between a Glock and a SIG, both of which I already own.

On the other hand, a Glock 17 really appeals to me too. Likewise a SIG P226. Even though my Beretta 92 already covers the "9mm, full size" niche and I have two other 9mms in my SIG and my Glock 26.

I guess, like many things, there is a continuum between diversity and specialization. I suppose I'm somewhere in the middle, slightly towards the diversity end of the spectrum.

Am I broken?!

Speaking as someone who's broken (financially so, not :(:barf::confused:), I don't think you're broken, any more than all the people who agree that "Variety is the spice of life." In fact, I begin to question myself when I think about getting too much of one thing: "Gee whiz! Why do I think I need another 9mm? I've already got two!"

...

Same deal, I like variety in guns.

And, by reading all the good and bad of all guns made within these forums, it has led the way in owning 4 more pistols, starting from Beretta, own my own, thru Sigs to Colt.

I honestly believe, that any man made object of different parts, is only as strong as its weakest link. And with any and every gun manufacture, from metal to springs, there is always a chance that someone is gonna get a bad gun, and in a lot of cases, it's a run of bad guns, same make and model.

Sh*t happens, and it is up to the customer service (and their reps attitudes) to defuse a pi**ed off customer at the other end of the conversation, that should be their job, and know that many are gonna be voice angry.

So, with that in mind, I'm sure there will be a few more different makes and models added to my collection up the road, and IF I ever run into any problems, it will be how the customer service, and the required repair/s are handled that will make or break, my money going there again.

Loyalties are gained and broken thru quality products out of the box, thru line inspections, and warranty and customer satisfaction thru kind words, "and actions."

It takes a lot of positive statements to sell a gun on based on other's words. It takes but, only, 1 negative statement to dissuade many potential buyers.

They (all the gun manufactures) should hire me as a consultant.. :D

I'm different...

KingAirDriver: ...whenever the time comes for me to buy a new gun, I always want something different than I already have.

I've tried other brands and styles, but found only two that I personally like: Glocks & Hks.

Maybe it's more of the interest of polymer frames. Also, I tend to stick with one so I can train more with it. To me, it'll be too confusing to have a lot of different brands.

So far, I have a Walther P22, a Bersa Thunder .380 CC, an XD-40 Service and a S&W M&P 9mm Compact. My rifles include a Ruger, a Marlin and a VEPR. So much for brand loyalty.

I spent a long time trying alot of different guns form a variety of diff't manufacturers but I seem to always go back to the ones that have proven themselves to me as well-made, reliable & accurate.

Hmmm....

The only guns I have actually bought more than one of from the same manufacturer is Ruger. Blackhawk, 22/45 and 10/22, mostly cause they were the most affordable options.

Other than that, only brand duplicated were due to gifts.

Well, there is collecting, and there is carrying. Both are good, but be careful about mixing the two. I do not "rotate" my carry guns in the usual sense of the meaning; the ones I carry point the same, and have similar balance and trigger strokes: Ruger SP101, Speed Six, GP100, SIG P229R. I tried to use a Glock 22 as a training gun, to save wear and tear on the SIG, but the different trigger stroke length and feel would cause problems when I switched back to the SIG. Back in the 90's, when I carried 1911 pistols as police duty handguns, I found I could only shoot a 1911 really well when I stopped shooting my DA sixguns for a while, so for several years I almost never shot my sixguns, except to qual with a J-frame I used for back-up. (Yep, a J is a fivegun!) There are other guns I own, and like, though it falls short of a collection, IMHO. These other guns are occasionally fired, but the sessions are short, so as not to mess with what some call "muscle memory" I have developed with my current carry guns.

No.
Then again a lot of folks are not like me either. :)

For CCW and other serious use, I prefer redundancy.
Four of the same is preferred, one for carry, one for backup, one for if primary needs servicing, and one off site.

I only use Single Action or Double Action.
Meaning NO DA/SA, Decockers, and the like.
I stay with platforms, like all the safeties are frame mounted and go "down" to fire them.

Hence 1911, K frame or Kel-Tec P-11.

I am not smart enough when in a stressful situation to remember if the lever goes up, or down to fire, and if the first trigger pull is going to be different from the next one.

Repetition becomes faith - faith becomes habit.

There's boiled shrimp, baked shrimp, fried shrimp, bbq...its all shrimp...but then again, there's pork, fish, beef, possum and lots of other good stuff to try. I try to make all the ladies happy. Smith Colt, Ruger, Kimber, Beretta, blah blah blah.Naw..you ain't weird to try different brands, you're smart!:neener:

I am with you on wanting something different. My only double manufacturer is a Ruger SP101 and a New Model SAS .22/22WMR, aside from those all my rifles are different and the other handguns are different.

My biggest problem is wanting something different looking. My first handgun as an all black auto-loader, so I wanted a revolver. Once I got that I wanted a stainless revolver, then I wanted a stainless autoloader. Now I want a steel frame auto loader, and I am sure if I ever get one I will want a different one that is blued or stainless as to be different from the original.

you are not alone, man it never ends.....

I think my signature is a dead give away to what I'm into :uhoh:
But do have several of different manufacturers and the smattering of
milsurp rifles and handguns like a Makarov ,a Tokarov , a couple of Tauri ,
CZs .

Me too. I have an XD40SC and a P3AT. Both of which I carry. The Kel-Tec was supposed to be carried by my wife. Finally my wife wants to carry the KT so I got to let it go. I got it past its break-in so it works well and I'm more than willing to buy another but I feel I must buy something different. That's why I'm looking into Seecamp and NAA 380's. We'll see.

Well if you use them much you will gravitate towards one or a few styles of gun. For me the 9mm are full-size Glocks, the .45s are 1911s, the .22 is on a 1911 frame, and the wheelguns are .45ACP. I have a few hangers-on that don't meet the above criteria but they don't get used much. The reason is having mags, holsters, ammo, reloading supplies and parts that match more than one gun is efficient, while having the accoutrements for 15 different flavors would be painful. I did however come to my senses once and realize I didn't need 3 G17s and a G34, now I pared it down to one of each. 4 1911s and counting is fine with me though.

When it comes to guns I see no problem with brand loyalty or sleeping around with different makes - it's whatever floats your boat - manufacturers have so much variety in their line-ups now it easy to stick with one make you like and sample all different kinds of guns - but we have a beretta, a glock and a M&P - I like all 3 and I'd certainly buy another from either one of those manufacturers, but sometimes you just want something different - I'd like a P99, i'd like an HK, etc - but I'm also interested in the px4 subcomp coming out, and the m&p compact is nice - so my next purchase might be a new make, might not - but really it doesn't matter just shoot what like and if you like all kinds then shoot all kinds.

I am moving toward standardizing on two platforms that I like: XD and S&W M&P. When I'm done, I will have an M&P 9, M&P 9C, XD-40, XD-40SC and XD-45C. I will continue to use my Bersa .380 in situations where I cannot carry anything else and will continue to shoot a lot of .22 for practice.
