i was just wondering because usually i can get the main page up with a note as to the outage, but i cant even get that this time. must be a major outage..

yeah they are defineatly down.

I know they have a bunch of users, but they seem to have a lot of problems. I was going to join, but I don't have a POP mail account, so it wouldn't let me. In hindsight, kinda glad I didn't, cause I would hate to be paying for those outages...

The AR15 site is slow for me also, even though I use a cable modem.
I hope with all the dues and advertising they collect they’re getting better servers.

I spend a lot of time over @AR15.com and I’m also a paid member.
I like the site very much, but it’s very clique’.
Don’t bitch and moan over there or you’ll be flamed pretty good or even banned.
They make you feel like they’re doing you a favor over there.
Has anyone seen those threads; Let’s do something for Ed & the rest for doing such a great job. Boy, what a joke that is.
I certainly give them their due for having such a fine web site, but let’s get real here.
It’s a business!

If you think the one time piddly membership dues that a very small minority of users pay and the small bit of advertising money there even comes close to paying for the monthly bandwidth and server costs you're smoking crack. Only way it's a business is if someone likes their business losing craploads of money every month.

A few people are paying out big to provide that site, they certainly aren't making money...

The reason I know you're right is because the sight is down more than it's up, clearly a sign that if it is a business, it's a really crappy one.

Other than that, I'll say with complete confidence that a good number of large forums are successful businesses. You don't have to pay a fortune for servers and bandwidth. True, some do, but you don't have to be in the red, unless you're not very business savvy.

MAKOwner,
No crack smoking on my end, but you sound like you may be judging from your tone.
I bet you're one of those guys with a million posts who's buying Ed that special gift.
Count me in for a hundred, so what if I've lost my job and I'm getting evicted tomorrow, nothing is too good for Ed and the boys.

How many paid members do they have?
They can't be paying too much for the bandwidth based upon it's performance.
Listening to them over there you'd think it's $10k a month, which couldn't be any further from the truth unless you were standing on the moon.

I just don't want to hear all the Staff, Moderators and the rest of the unpaid faithful carry on with the self-serving BS.
It's a great site, don't get me wrong, but heaven forbid you disagree with all the self-serving BS over there.
Hey, you even came here to defend them.

Why are AR-15s referred to as ARFs?

Kevlar tester huh? Sounds like a rough job :D Anyhow in case anyone hasn't said it yet, welcome to THR

KevlarTester

Welcome to The HighRoad KevlarTester. I am a paid member of AR15.com. You are right about that place. However I think it is the best place to find out information on Ar's. I also really like the hometown forums. Heck Aimless from Oswego gave me info on a lawyer that might be able to help me with Pistol Permit issues, and that better then any other person or organization has done. The Equipment Exchange is also cool. Even though I don't patronize it very much I still miss it now that it's gone.

Being a Californian I can't visit AR-15 anymore without cussing myself and my living conditions out, but the optics forum there is great. Wish there was a way to search more than 30 or 90 or however many it was days.

I was a member (technically still am) from the days of the mailing list through the 1st Ar15.com and then into the second incarnation. Since I don't want to talk trash on people who aren't here to defend themselves, I'll just say I grew weary of a couple high-profile members who eventually became moderators and also an ever increasing level of high schoolish cliques. Quit visiting over a year ago and I don't miss the place.

I have to say that arfcom is the best source for AR related data. Besides that it is a horrible forum (looking at the technical side). Slow, crappy searches, Hard to find your own posts overe there. I know that I am just bitching but maybe the other forums I belong to have spoiled me.

It is still the BEST AR site on the net.

Puff puff pass, dude, because each one of their users with "dealer" under their name pays $250 per month.
Wish there was a way to search more than 30 or 90 or however many it was days.
Buy a membership.:D hehehehe...
Arfcom will go down on you more than a $2 hooker. Just get use to it.
BWAHAHAHAHAHAHA... no kidding...

Respectable, for certain, but making obvious statements like the site goes down waaaaaaaaaaay too much isn't talking trash. Other things are.:D
