So, most of you already know that I'm addicted to hickock45 videos on youtube - he's seems like a down to earth guy who really enjoys life. Plus, hickock45 is one helluva shot.

Well, I really like the Larry Potterfield videos too. He seems like a level headed guy who really knows alot about guns and smithing and shooting.

I do tend to order alot from Midway too.

So what do you guys (and gal) think of the Larry Potterfiled series on youtube?

He makes me laugh...that cheezy smile all throughout his catalogue and website.

He AND ALL OF HIS FAMILY are awesome people.... Not including what they obviously do for the NRA and the fact they FOUNDED the FNRA - they do even MORE for the local community here.

Anything and everything from local folks in distress needing assistance to charitable giving at every level to...... well anything in the community.

And that cheezy smile? HECK'yeah - here's a guy who's HOBBY is ANYTHING to do with the outdoors from hunting to fishing to collecting to shooting to reloading......
.....and he's found a way to make $$BIG BUCKS$$ while simply pursuing his hobby!

And in return? HE GIVES BACK!

And THAT'S the reason for that "cheezy smile" and yup, it cracks me up too, lol ! ! !

Oh - that "cheezy smile" is NOT just a T.V. persona - or a facade for the cameras, he wears it everywhere from the local grocery store, at WalMart, the Mall, the local restaurants - everywhere. He's THAT happy and THAT easy going!

Originally he was the business partner of Bob Graf at Graf & Sons. After a number of years they had a parting of the ways and he went on to found Midway.

I like him. I always watch his show on the Outdoors channel......"Midway USA Gun Stories"....great show. The show is in repeats right now, but I hope they begin a new season of shows soon. Best new show to come on the Outdoor channel in years. I can't rave enough about it.

For those that do not have the Outdoor channel.....the format is similar to the old "Tales Of The Gun" series from History Channel, except it's only a 30 min show and presented in HD. Larry himself does not host the show (Joe Mantegna does) and the show features many gun historians giving their take on a particular firearm.....and yes, Mr. Potterfield gives his thoughts as well in a more serious mode of expression.....usually without the "cheesy" smile!:D

....I just finished watching the episode dedicated to the Colt SAA.

I do so enjoy his Knockdown Factor ratings in his reviews!
You know..."the ability of a cartridge to knock down an assailant with one well placed shot."

I find myself ordering less and less from midway as I find better deals elsewhere it seems. However, at least two or three times a year he has what I want and others dont, so I buy anyway.

That being said, no matter anyones feelings about midway, larry potterfield himself is a heck of a man. He really seems to be the real deal.

I could watch his vids all day.....except for one little thing. He's very adept in taking a seven hour project and making it appear that even Stevie Wonder could do it in less than 16 minutes. Being a 'hands-on' kinda guy myself,I really wish he'd stretch those vids out to five or seven minutes and really give his audience a better detailed idea of the time involved in laying out & planning such projects, the methodology, and the tools & skills required to actually pull off some of his projects. I mean I can personally figure out just about everything he's doing.....but not all of us have a staff of twenty five assistants and a $200k work shop........:D

After you custom weld a 1846 rimfire firing pin to the custom-forged housing of the new .399 Ultrarare, just splash on a little cold blue.

He is a personal hero. I love that if you didn't know better, you would never think he is the owner of MidwayUSA, he is so unassuming.

I also like how in his videos, he shows you how to use normal tools and hardware to do little gunsmithing jobs, even though his company sells purpose built items for the same jobs.

I think Larry has done much for the firearms industry and sport. I also wish he would do something about their shipping charges.

I buy quite a few items from E-Bay dealers "another collecting hobby I have" and most is shipped via U.S. Mail or from foreign countries mail service. Usually 3 day service from anywhere in the U.S, and less than 2 weeks registered mail from Europe.

He must have, that's the only way I can imagine shipping would be that high. That being said, I also like his video's but I don't order from Midway. It's not that I wouldn't order from Midway, but I almost always find it cheaper at Natchez and the shipping is about the same, or Powder Valley Inc for bigger orders, or if I'm just ordering a small amount Grafs is often cheapest with the $4.95 shipping even though their prices are a little higher than Natchez.

Not including what they obviously do for the NRA...
Not just the NRA. They also support state firearms organizations and programs. Last year I was present at a fundraising banquet when a representative from Midway presented a $100,000 check to the Texas State Rifle Association to support youth shooting programs in Texas.

Larry has become a close friend and an invaluable resource for the shows. He slaughters me in sporting clays, too!

I wrote Midway a while back letting them know how much I enjoyed their Thursday night lineup on one of the sporting channels (Dish network). He wrote me back personally thanking me and asking for suggestions to improve. He's got my business.

"Larry Potterfield is the coolest man in America after Hank Hill."

I think Bernie has a good point there. Although I've never met Larry Potterfield personally, his youtube videos seem to give him a blue collar nobility. Like a self-made man who is community involved.

I mean, he isn't making videos about 1892's and 1886 winchesters and stuff for any profit - they are simply educational. Whenever I search youtube...which is often, I always play Larry's video's first, watch the others, and then tend to come back and watch his again.

One day, my youngest lost a screw out of his fishing reel. He knew it was loose, but didn't feel like he had the time to tighten it with all the spanish we were slaying. Well, the screw fell out in the water and he never found it. While we waited 6 weeks for one to come from the manufacturer, we visited youtube and found a video on how to make a screw....by Larry Potterfield. Now, we never did make that screw (we didn't have a lathe), but my son had a lot of appreciation as to how one is made and you better tighten one down if it's coming loose. And now, thanks to my dad, we have a miniature lathe ready to set-up and play with when I return home. So new loose screws beware!
