is my police six a k or l frame??

i have bought a pancake holster for my ruger police service six 4 inch barrel. i now have found a leather iwb holster but they don't make them for my six, they have k and l frame holsters. which would be best fit on my gun? thanks

If anything will fit, it would have to be the K-Frame size.

The I-Frame S&W is a tiny little gun the 5-shot .38 snub nose & 6-shot .22 RF J-Frame guns are based on.

The Service 6's are comparable to S&W K frames, the GP-100 is comparable to L frame Smiths. Holsters are usually interchangeable, but not always.

Yep. When my uncle (the only other left-handed shooter in my family) died, I claimed a Safariland duty holster he had for a S&W Model 10, figuring it would work for the Service Six I inherited from my dad the same year. The much-beefier Service Six (in .357 Magnum) does not fit.

My model 19 and service six uses the same leather holster just fine.

^^ Yes, my Service Six and my Taurus M66 (same profile as your 19) also fit. But, the S&W M10 for which my holster mentioned above was made is a slimmer gun with lower-profile sights, and that's what seems to be hanging up my Ruger. Maybe the holster was made for a "slim-barrel" 10, and not the heavy-barrelled one.

Yup. As other's have said, K frame holster will almost always work just fine (there are just a few exceptions).
My Speed Six (same frame size as your Police/Service six) gets carried in a K frame Desantis holster.

When I needed a holster for my 2 3/4" Service-Six I bought a DeSantis Speed Scabbard and it was marked 3" S&W K frame when it arrived.

Since then even though it's not on their pull-down menu when you pick a 3" K frame Speer Scabbard in the notes for applications you see this:

Neither. Frame size letters designations are a Smith & Wesson thing.
"...claimed a Safariland duty holster..." Leather? That can be fixed by re-forming it with water. Wet but not dripping, then put the wrapped in Saran wrap revolver in and let dry. No heat. No helping it dry.

My security sixes fit best in holsters made for L frames...but some will go in K frame holsters. strangely enough, my 4" GP fits in a holster I bought for a 4" security six. I think that the security six is slightly bigger than a K and the GP is slightly smaller than an N.
I consider the SS to be an L class gun and the GP close to an N.
Confusing?

The Six Series is sort of in between the K frames and the L frames based upon cylinder diameter. It is way smaller than a N frame. Barrel profiles are another matter as they can vary even on the same gun.
