I was looking through the S&W catalog online and i did not see a listing for a blued equivalent of the 686 (4 inch). is it supposed to be the 586? Is it still available?

I bought my 586 back in 1986 and it has been a great pistol. The 586 is no longer listed on S&W model list. Sad really as I prefer a blued pistol to a stainless on in most cases.

You might call S&W. I read somewhere reciently that they were making a limited run of 586 (blued 686) for one of thier big distributers. Of course, there is always the used market.
p.s the 581 is the fixed sighted version of this same gun and may be worth a look too.

I did not see the 581 on their web site either ( i think).

What frame is the 686 built upon? I own one but i do not know how to determine this. Is there a chart available, or specifications to determine what constitutes the various frame sizes?

Also, why are blued guns more desireable than the stainless? I was told that the stainless is slightly more brittle.

The 686 is an L (medium) frame. I have a 586 I'll probably never part with.

Seems I have seen a list of models by frame but can't locate. In general:

J: Small Frame
K/L: Medium Frame
N: Large Frame

Hopefully others that know a lot more than me will post a reply.

Good luck. The only SW blued revolvers that I have seen were in the consignment case at my local range. If only I bougt them. :(

If I remember correctly some of S&W's earlier revolvers were a "I" frame. They appear to be close to the "J" frame in size.Might be a tiny bit smaller. My dealer had one of them.I couldn't even tell you what model they were but he had marked "I" frame on it.

Ruger Redhawk

IIRC, The S&W "I" frames were made in 32 S&W Long ( 32 New Police ) and 38 S&W ( not the 38 spl. ) The "J" frame window was enlongated to hold the longer cylinder of the 38 spl., much as the Police Positive became the Police Positive Special when it's frame was stretched to hold the longer 38 spl. cartridge.

Unfortunately, I don't think that S&W regularly makes blued guns anymore.

In Arizona, there are usually some good used ones around, and I buy everyone I find. Last summer picked up a Model 10 with a 6 inch "pencil" barrel in Tucson $220. (Murphys Guns always has a good selection).

I've also bought 3 4in. model 10s $148 each, and a model 18 $348. from J&G sales in Prescott. I order them from here in the U. A. E. by e-mail, and they hold them till I have leave in the summer. they're very good and if I don't want them when I see them, there's no problem.

Got a beautiful Model 13 4in. $289. from Prescott Valley Guns a couple years ago.

Maybe it's an area thing but brand new (lock, MIM, frame mounted firing pin) 586+ wheelies in 4" and 6" are available in California right now. In fact I almost bought one. Loved it until I saw the seven charge holes.

Local chain Turner's Outdoorsman carries them.

Don't look ( in the gun case at your local dealer's ) now but folks like me are slowly and quietly scarfing up nice S&W pre-sellout guns made in blue and walnut - and nice Colt's too ( it just doesn't feel right to have only a single digit of 38's stashed away just in case )... but nickeled or 357's will do in a pinch!

Hey, I told you not to look!!! :D
