and the newer trend having red dots mounted co-witnessed on pistols purely designed for defensive use. In the second case the general trend is to go for iron sights first and transition to dot if needed for longer or more precise shots.
I don't know where this idea comes from but it makes no sense to me. Co-witnessed irons on a pistol are useless to me -- if I could focus on the front sight I wouldn't be spending $500+ on RMR sights and mounts for my carry guns!
