Is there Something I Should Know About My BERETTA ???

In another thread, it says that the SF Police is switching from their Berettas to Sigs because of problems with the Beretta (i.e. keyholing).

I have, and sometimes use as my CCW during the cooler months, a BERETTA CENTURION 9mm.

Is anyone aware of any problems with this Beretta model?

To me, it is a top-notch firearm (accurate, reliable and I have a couple of so-called high-cap mags for it) -- but is there anything I should know about it before I use it as my CCW again?

I have an INOX compact and it seems ammo sensitive to some extent.

I have had it keyhole with my hardcast bullet handloads, at about round 20 it will reliably keyhole Bullet hitting the target sideways leaving a profile of the bullet rather than a round hole with the hardcast lead. Removing the barrel I noticed shreds of lead hanging from the rifling . The manual mentions that it does not like lead bullets and the manual is correct. I no longer use the hardcast lead in it. The rifling twist seems faster than my other 9mms, which may help it perform better with jacketed ammo.

I have been shooting Berry's copper plated hollow points as my reload round and S&B jacketed as my commercial fodder with no further problems or Keyholing and excellent accuracy. So maybe the SFPD had some bad ammo (soft jackets) that caused the Keyhole problem, or maybe even it was copper fouling buildup from improper cleaning.

The San Francis guys were using a .40 caliber Beretta, and have a bad choice of ammunition... SIG agreed to buy all the Berettas from them for 350,000 dollars.
So they switched and are looking at suing the crap out of Beretta because they didn't test their choice of duty ammo in their guns before buying a crap load of it.

The people in SF are nucking futs.

Your Beretta is a 9MM... there is nothing wrong with it. CCW it with pride and confidence.

PD's change all the time

I would not worry that a PD changed from one to another. Our police department here was going to change weapons. H&K came in and was going to give the PD the same price on a USP as the PD was going to pay for S&W's. I have nothing against S&W. In fact, I own a couple and my wife uses one as here carry weapon but, it aint no H&K. Truth is, the new chief of police likes S&W. Chances are, the had some kind of leadership change and the new guy likes Sig.

My advice, if you shoot good with it, if it conceals well for what you want, if it feels good in your hands and is reliable, keep carrying it.

I wouldn't put any credence in anything coming out of any gubmint agency in SF. They can't even keep the bums from urinating and defecating all over the streets and sidewalks.

I too have a 92FS Centurion.

There are people around who would have you believe that Berettas are a bad choice. They usually cite "frame cracking" problems or are rabid 1911 fans who can't stand the fact that our military replaced their beloved pistol. Ignore them. The Beretta is one of the finest 9mms made, end of story.

Second Akurat's post. I have a 92FS Brigadier and it's a fine weapon, as is its little brother, my 8000. Both function well and are accurate. I still love my 1911A1 as well.
